Thanks for sharing. Agree with the ex-SDI lead that IAF can take a page out of the IN on project management.
But disagree with him that imports are justified because because DRDO/HAL are not magically world class. Imagine where SDI would be if IAF ran to Russia every time to integrate a DRDO/Israeli weapon since Russia is a leader in mating weapons to platforms...
The really eye opening part is that Russia offered the whole source code for Su30 but Indian leadership thought it wise not to pursue that offer for an AF that will likely still be flying till the 2060s...

I keep saying this, how many ships are equipped with towed array sonar?. They waited decades by not importing the it and two NSTL programs filed to deliver. We could have had a repeat of INS Khukri because of this sonar. Are you willing to pay such costs?
Didn't India already procure some German towed array sonars -- these types of stopgaps are fine as long as they don't kill the local development... But more to the point I'm making, why isn't ALTAS inducted into a few ships so it can be iterated upon?
I am also curious how DRDO manages prioritization of requirements from the three service branches... are these serviced according to the weightage of the funding split across the services?

Wasn’t he making exactly that point? Services need equipment to fight; you cannot block sonar and torpedo imports based solely on DRDO’s assurances.
They waited for 20 years and ordered limited numbers ~5 years back. I dont think even latest frigates have those today.

In my view , IAF and DRDO should have scrapped Tejas MK 1 ,long back and Designed the Tejas Around GE 414
We had announced GE 414 in October 2010 as the power plant for MK 2 , thereby Accepting the NEED for a larger MK 2
And till that time, Only the LSP 3 and LSP 4 were flying ie Prototypes of MK1
Our scientists should have had the Foresight that MK1 has limitations of Size , Space and Volume and Trying to Get Every Equipment Fitted inside will cause delays , which is what happened
F 16 , Mirage 2000 , J 10 are all having bigger engines than GE 404 and hence have more fuel and hard points
If MK 2 work had begun by 2010 then it would be operationally ready by Now ie in 2026
MK 2 is the definitive Multi Role Medium Weight Fighter that we need to replace the Mirage 2000 , Jaguar and MiG 29
MK 1A , Once it is finally ready will be limited by fuel and Number of Weapons that it can carry .
Of course MK1A is going to be very capable with an AESA radar and Astra missiles but All these delays have certainly affected IAF's Operational Preparedness
If the IAF was able to achieve this with around 50 missiles/precision weapons, I don't think the IAF has done anything wrong in procuremnet planning. There is always scope for improvement, and planning is not everything—execution is also important.

Even with all the delays affecting LCA mk1a/2, the IAFs meandering acquisition process for MMRCA/MRFA which kicked off in 2001 is a key reason for the problems it faces today.
Neither did the IAF move to finalize the MKI upg which has been hanging since 2006.
Frankly, there was no way anyone could have predicted the current turn of events (geopolitical). But both these progs were firmly within AHQs control and timely completion could've saved the national exchequer billions of $ in inflation/lifecycle/opportunity costs.
If you've noticed, the only deals that did get signed in the last 20 or so years (except Rafale 1.0) were political deals like C-17, Apache and Chinook (quid pro quo for the civilian nuclear deal w/US).
Rafale 1.0 was at best a stop gap vs original req for 126 MMRCA. So not considering that.

What I read is that Tejas MK2 Sensor Fusion and Cockpit has been influenced by Rafale
Since our Enemy Targets are just Next Door , we will be relying heavily on Missiles
Even for China ,.If a conflict breaks out , I don't think IAF will undertake attacks on Tibetan Bases and Airfields using Manned Fighters
