Transport Aircraft of IAF - C-130J, C-17 Globemaster, C295: Updates & Discussions

Once we start manufacturing them in India , all additional orders will be a formality

After replacing the 50+ HS 748s, they can also replace the 100+ An-32s. With the other wings and civilian orders combined, the numbers can easily cross 200 for India alone. Furthermore you can add orders for exports. It's excellent for regional connectivity in India for cargo flights.

Is this the first such instance?
I think so.

What's the application? Pls consider that. This isn't your regular transportation aircraft. If at all, that'd be it's secondary function. This would have made sense were the C-295s a replacement for the An-32s. Clearly that isn't the case here.
Its replacing roles of both Avro and partially An-32. The projected requirement for MTA class is around ~45 meaning it will not be one to one replacement. Thus a modern turboprop transporter is a must-have.

Pls note my objections to this is based on the current financial & general situation in a post Covid world not otherwise.
Because we spend too much time and effort to get here. It took us a decade from the initial RFI to this near conclusion. If we cancel the tender based on a temporary situation we will have to go through the same whole process again. Also, Its only 10-15% of the contact we are paying this year. This FY its already budgeted because we were postponing this for the last few.

The M777 saga comes to mind & so does the Rafale saga, first off the bat.

The An-32 also served to move personnel which was & is the primary function of the Avros except that the Avros functioned to move VIP personnel mostly. That's what the C-295 will do when you're referring to taking up the An-32 role.Plus there's the RTA version of the SARAS with a similar carrying capacity on the drawing board . Sounds like fun duplicating efforts & projects in supporting platforms.

I suppose this makes sense if only in a perverted sort of way. Guess whatever the situation, armed forces top brass are loathe to sacrifice their personal privileges. @vstol Jockey ; @Falcon

L1 was declared in Q1 2015. Its now 6th year.

Rafale and M777 tender were canceled. M777 was cleared under FMS route.

Yes, this can fill both aircraft's roles with better performance.

Read Indranil s comment about An32 with its high powered engine and larger wing area cannot be replaced by C295 in hot and high altitude.

The original An-32 replacement was the Indo-Russian MTA. But now it's dead. So the C-295 is the only immediately available alternative before a proper program can begin to replace the role of the An-32.

The Tata-Airbus JV, where the C-295s for our military will roll out from, will become operational sooner or later, more later than sooner. I would like to see quite a lot of these absolutely versatile aircraft in various iterations being produced for all services and for all sorts of roles - Civilian and Military. So, here goes...

1) Medium Tactical Transport ( C-295M; IAF- 'Dragoon') : Capacity for 71 troops, 48 paratroopers, 27 stretchers, five 2.24 × 2.74 m (88 × 108 inches) pallets, or three light vehicles(LSVs, etc.). (Replacing IAF Avros, HS-478s, An-32s)
- 150 units

2) Medium Maritime Patrol Aircraft/ Anti-Submarine Warfare (C-295N; IN, ICG- 'Kraken') : Provisions for 6 hardpoints + internal bay for sonobuoys, depth charges, gliding-mines)
- 24 units

3
) Signals Intelligence(SIGINT)/ Electronic Intelligence(ELINT)/ Photographic Intelligence(PHOTINT)/ ISR (C-295I; R&AW, NTRO, Air Force- 'Ashwini') : Dedicated Intel Versions- retrofitted with requisite sensors, radars and other 'sensitive' equipment
- 36 units (24- R&AW, 6 - NTRO, 12 - IAF)

4) Aerial Gunship/ CAS/ Air Interdiction/ Force Protection (AC-295; IA, IAF - 'Yamaraj') : 25 mm, 40mm, 105mm cannons + Smart Munitions
- 30 units

5
) Search and Rescue(SAR) (CC-295; IAF- 'Sanjeevni')
- 12 units

6)
Special Mission Aircraft (MC-295S; AFSOD- 'Ashoka') : Dedicated SF aircraft, SOF infil, exfil, etc.
- 24 units

7)
AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) (WC-295; IN, IAF- 'Krait') : Airborne early warning and control version with EL/W-2090 360 degree radar dome. The AESA radar was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and has an integrated IFF (Identification friend or foe) system.
- 12 units

In addition to the immense flexibility, capabilities and versatility these aircraft will provide us with, we could fit them with a lot of indigenous systems, and create a pretty reliable, local supply chain. A true force-multiplier. The cost-effectiveness and exports-prospects, of course, are major plusses.

Im not sure about other stuff but im 💯 sure this platform wont be suitable as an AEW-C. IAF would avoid a turboprop as it has vertical limits during operations.

Was I being that fanboyish?? :(
Not even a hint of realism??
There are certain things/items with certain capabilities which the forces have issued their requirements for. And our budget , our technical capabilities and administrative skills are proving to be highly inadequate to fullfill even those.

Let those small things happen first. Maybe a decade down the line we can discuss other things.

The current forecasted requirement is for 56 for IAF + 8 for ICG.

IN many also go for single-digit numbers for Il-38 replacement. There will not be an AEW&C, gunship, or SAR version. SIGINT requirements are projected for smaller turbofan platforms.

IAF MTA requirement is for ~20ton payload turbofan, not half payload turbo prop. Basically, 120+ An-32 is supposed to be replaced by ~45 C390 or Il-276 class.
