GTRE Kaveri Engine

I don't think it's a fake report or anything, I believe it for now, but you know our decisions are rarely consistent.

Someone also told me there's an Su30 being converted into a flying testbed, not just for the Kaveri, but also for the future 120 kN-class engine.

There was also a MiG-29 proposed before this, so I'll take it with a pinch of salt and celebrate only when it actually happens

Su 30 one I am not so sure about because the reports regarding the engine JV have often mentioned getting HTAF and FTB from the JV partner. If we get FTB through the JV, I doubt the FTB will be a Su 30 because it's Russian jet.

Okay he made it public now, so here is my source

There is now an offer for a complete engine package from France.
Here's what the current scenario looks like (personal opinion/don't take it seriously if you don't want to):
  1. The Kaveri Dry Engine is in Russia, where it will be tested and certified, and later flown on a Tejas.

  2. The M88-4 engine deal will be signed if the F414 deal with the Uncle Sam doesn't work out (~100 kN engine).

  3. Another deal for the co-development of a 120 kN class engine, which should enable the AMCA to supercruise and have a core with upgrade potential with France. We should get the HATF, FTB, Compressor, Machining etc.

  4. And finally, the G2G deal for 114 Rafales.

All this should be done by the end of year at most

This is not happening.

Few reasons:
  • GE414 local production with ToT is not an absolute must. We can live without it. Importing is fine if the costs are high just like GE404 for Mk1.
  • Redoing MK2 with a new engine will add delays to the program and its unnecessary.
  • French people are twice as much of a pain in the *censored* when it comes to negotiating price and ToT.
  • This deal has been highly publicized at the highest level for both sides. It would look bad if this didn't go through.
The Indian general public psyche tends to love to hate Americans for some outdated reasons. In this way, the Indian right and left are the same, perhaps due to socialist upbringing. It's why any news of this nature will generate a huge debate. The Trump administration is not very helpful in this regard.

That's the issue here, the sense i'm getting is that US has lost interest in selling engines, at all, I mean. They want to sell those F21s and F35 (eventually)

Not with ToT or directly. They want something big, maybe more P8Is will be fine, or strykers, but Trump Admin. is looking for something bigger

To quote, ‘India did certain things that rubbed us the wrong way,’ says US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick.

“For instance, you generally buy your military gear from Russia. That’s a way to kind of get under the skin of America if you’re going to buy your armaments from Russia,” Lutnick said. “I think India’s starting to move towards buying military equipment from the United States, which then goes a long way. And these kind of things just creating that relationship being a part of BRICS, which is, oh, let’s move to not support the dollar and dollar hegemony.”

But Let's see, I hope the F414 works out. But...

Our babus will say GOH easily. Russia has shown sincerity and has parted with a lot of strategic tech without any fine print. US is not ready to do that, So why would we give them money? If they cannot part with F414 we can go with french tech. We have people who will do the high tech jugaad to get French or even Russian engines to work. Given that their 30 trillion dollar debt is going to bite them any time soon, it for them to loose this relationship for petty things.
