No figures out yet. But just from the size of this thing in figure compared to the extension switch on the ground. It doesn't seem MANPAD to me.

It seems to be a rbs-70 ng and mistral equivalent.

The mpdms would be different to this. Hope they develop a crotale NG equivalent too in the future.

There are systems weighing upto 20 kg with the missile and CLU unit. If it's less than say 20-25 kg combined.

Its really good.

We can have this system on a shilika and forget about that Biho system. Vocal for local.

DRDO's VSHORAD with AMDL (Advanced Man-Portable Data Link), which was supposed to be developed in 2023, is already ready and was test-fired today off the Orissa coast. Right now only its wind tunnel testing was to be on and the field trials were to happen a year from now. This is a one year jump.

From the looks of it, its outer ranges is in excess of 6 km (from the launch video it seemed to go 7 km with ease). The AMDL is being jointly developed by Green Robotics and BEL, and is unique to all MANPADS. It means that the missile can be fired through a network. Which means not only the launcher can be remote from the operator but one can have a network of remote stations which can be triggered by a surveillance platform.

It features a dual band IR seeker (which is supposed to be uncooled) and be guided by a multi-spectral optronics unit (beyond network intelligence). from the looks of it, it hasn't copied any known MANPAD. Its tail fins seem to be maneuverable, while its frontal fins, more mid bodied, are for stabilization. This is the reverse of most MANPADS. It looks bulkier than even Mistral. Which means its weight will be closer to 20 kg. If not more.

It seems to carry substantial more fuel as also have a large enough guidance and warhead section. It's supposed to be a dual-thrust solid propellant rocket engine. The aft section will burn faster and provide it with adequate thrust to reach a high speed. The next section will burn slower, providing it acceleration but also much greater range. It's also supposed to have a Miniaturised reaction control system to aid maneuverability.

It remains to be seen what is its Max altitude. It can't be 3.5 km as was said, cos that would make it inoperable in the Himalayas. From its size, I'd say it is more.

The bigger benefit will be in its spin off. It can be made into a canisterised Point Defence System. Also it will provide aircover to advancing armoured columns, giving them a range much beyond Shilka and given its networked operability, remote AEW can help armoured columns ambush aerial targets. And it is this network centricity which is the key. This would apply to all Indian air defence. From QRSAM to any other.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out two successful test flights of the Very-Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile on Tuesday. The missiles were test-fired from a ground-based portable launcher from Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, located off the coast of Odisha. As per the DRDO, VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) that has been designed and developed indigenously by the DRDO's Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian Industry Partners. "VSHORADS incorporates many novel technologies including miniaturised Reaction Control System and integrated avionics, which have been successfully proven during tests. The missile, meant for neutralising low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges, is propelled by a dual thrust solid motor," the official said.

The design of the missile including the launcher has been highly optimized to ensure easy portability. Both the flight tests have completely met the mission objectives. Notably, earlier on September 8, India had successfully completed six flight tests of the Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system off the Odisha Coast as part of evaluation trials by the Indian Army. The flight tests were carried out against high-speed aerial targets mimicking various types of aerial threats to evaluate the capability of the weapon systems under different scenarios including long-range medium altitude, short-range high, altitude manoeuvring target, low radar signature with receding and crossing target and salvo launch with two missiles fired in quick succession. The system performance was also evaluated under day and night operation scenarios. During these tests, all the mission objectives were met establishing pin-point accuracy of the QRSAM weapon system with state-of-the-art guidance and control algorithms including the warhead chain. DRDO conducted two successful test flight of Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile on 27 Sep 2022 from a ground based portable launcher at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha. VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) designed and developed indigenously by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian Industry Partners.

Finally the press release came, but no number's. We will have to wait for the def expo it seems.
 
One report said this project was prioritised due to failure of buying/local production of a foreign shorad, likely Starstreak of MBDA though its manpad? So probably same specifications, maybe slightly below if they can't match MBDA specs at first. But looked like a very capable system in the video.
 
Probably eye estimate but vshorad range usually ~ 5-7km max given its last line of defence? From the hindu article I found the igla replacement criteria was

As per requirements, the VSHORAD should have a maximum range of 6 km, altitude of 3 km along with all-weather capability and will replace the existing Igla in service which is in urgent need of replacement. VSHORAD is the soldier’s last line of defence against enemy combat aircraft and helicopters in the multilayered air defence network.

This says target detection range of 24 Km and a hitting range of 7 Km.

 
Maybe we are just aiming for max altitude of like 6-7km so that troops along LAC can also target Chinese choppers operating at those heights with this system?
Normally the missile is ejected out by compressed gas and than the main propulsion ignites. In a dual thrust missile, you have a booster thrust followed by its own thrust. It is not same as Dual pulse. But it has a very small booster, maybe to keep blow back very small to save the operator. So its range will be limited. I initially thought that it probably has a proper booster.

This probably is the capability we are aiming at. Something similar. So that eventually we can replace Mistrals on helicopters, Soviet MANPADs on smaller naval vessels and 9m333 mobile systems in Army.

If we able achieve what Mistral is capable of doing, then its a huge development. Mistral never fails to hit its target during live fire.
