Probably to cover a possible seaborne invasion attempt. This is why the Ukrainian position is difficult, they have to allow for troops invading from the sea, or from Belarus, or anywhere along the Russian border. It is also why the Kyiv diversion theory is garbage, Ukraine is forced to allow for threat of invasion from these regions regardless of actual invasion, so why would the Russians have killed themselves to achieve something they were already achieving without dying? With the balance of forces in the region, it is not clear why the Ukrainian forces are still holding the 5th Armoured Brigade in Odessa, one of their few reserves, in an attempt to shift the balance of power, especially in the Davydiv Brid sector and towards Nova Kakhovka, 20km further south on the Dnieper. But it is true that it is now difficult to carry out attacks over 20 km.
