Women BSF bikers to make history with debut on Republic Day

It is going to be another first for women this Republic Day!

A newly-raised all-woman bikers contingent of the Border Security Force (BSF) will make its debut on Rajpath on January 26.

The 27-member BSF women 'daredevils' are expected to draw cheers as they showcase their stunts and acrobatics on their 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles.

In 2015, women contingents of the Army, Navy and Air Force had made debut in this national parade.

The all-women 'daredevil' bikers squad was raised by the country's largest border guarding force last year, on the lines of their much-acclaimed male counterparts.

As per the tradition of the Republic Day parade, the BSF and the Army's bike-borne 'daredevils', alternatively every year, end the parade riding their roaring bikes.

"This time it was the BSF's turn and they have sent in their women contingent. It will be the first time that women bikers will be part of the Republic Day parade," a senior official said.

The members of this special women bikers squad have been specially chosen by BSF trainers and are aged between 25-30 years. They are drawn from various combat ranks of the force, the official said.

The women squad has been named 'Seema Bhavani' or the border braves, an official of the paramilitary force said.

The BSF 'daredevil' team had made news a few years back when the former US President Barack Obama while officiating as the chief guest of the 2015 parade, signalled a thumbs up to the bikers from his dais on Rajpath and had later called their stunts "impressive".

The BSF will also have its iconic camel contingent along with its marching and band teams to march down the Rajpath the same day.

ITBP soldiers to get temperature controlled border outposts soon

Realising tough working conditions of soldiers guarding the Sino-India border at high altitudes where temperature often drops to minus 40 degree, centre has approved 54 temperature controlled integrated BOPs, 47 of which will be solely for ITBP.

Sources in the force confirmed that the first state-of-the-art composite BOP in Ladakh is almost near completion.

In a first of its kind, eco-friendly BOP are being constructed at a forward location near the China border. The project is being built under Make in India theme with the force engaging IIT, Delhi and IIT, Roorkee.

The BOPs will reportedly have room for 100 jawans, mess, toilets, medical room, and office of senior officers at a height of 15,000 feet.

Besides underground bunker for security, the post will have space for each soldier. The BOP will have insulated walls, roof and windows protecting it from severe weather condition especially the sub zero minus temperatures, solar power electricity and heating system, 24 hour liquid water supply and fresh air supply with the help of Geo Thermal ducts with no dependence on fossil fuel.

"Soldiers fight hard conditions maintaining highest level of vigil. The new BOP will make life much easier for the soldier," a source said.

These BOP will maintain the inside temperature at 20-22 degree celsius and are being built at a cost of nearly Rs 20 crore in Lukung Valley.

The ITBP is deployed in Ladakh, Sikkim, Uttrakhand, Himachal. Evenutally, such BOPs will be constructed in the Arunachal region as well.

Union Home Ministry in the recently concluded winter session restated its committment to the development of border infrastructure to strengthen the operational capabilities of ITBP.

This comes in the backdrop of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh ringing in the New Year with ITBP troops in Uttarakhand's Nelong valley along the China border.

Meanwhile, the centre has agreed to provide light weight clothing to the jawans above 9,000 feet, previously only provided to the jawans of BOP at a height of 14,000 feet and above.

The Union Minister also recently assured the force to give better and modern weapons, more snow scooters and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV).ITBP soldiers to get temperature controlled border outposts soon

CISF takes over security of ISRO's remote sensing centre in Dehradun

The centre functions under the command of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and is the premier training and educational facility for developing trained professionals in the field of remote sensing, geo-informatics and GPS technology for natural resources, environmental and disaster management.

"A contingent of 63 CISF personnel has been sanctioned to be deployed at the facility by the government. The squad took charge of the task yesterday," Central Industrial Security Force CISF) spokesperson and Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Hemendra Singh said.

The paramilitary force will provide round-the-clock armed security cover to the facility and special vehicle-borne quick-reaction teams of commandos will be stationed at vantage points in case of an attack or sabotage-like activity at the facility.

The campus also houses the headquarters of the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific and is affiliated to the United Nations (UN).

The headquarter of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS), the largest non-governmental scientific society in the country, is also located in this campus.

"In light of increased threat perception to Department of Space (DoS) installations situated across the country, IIRS is inherently vulnerable to threats from anti-nationals and may be a potential target," the spokesperson said.

With this induction, the CISF now has a total of 340 units, both in government and non-government domain, under its security cover across the country.

INDIAN snipers answering Pakistani Snipers with Vidhwanshak ANTI MATERIAL Sniper rifles

fb_img_1531379508364.jpg

Recently Indian Home Ministry has ordered 60 Snipers from BSF to be deployed at the LOC so that terrorists intruding into India could be taken out at the gates itself. Here we are discussing the weapon they are equipped with so as to take out any unwanted visitor from across the border.

Vidhwansak is an Indian multi-caliber anti-materiel rifle (AMR) or large-caliber sniper rifle manufactured by Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli. It can be used in the anti-materiel role for destroying enemy bunkers, lightly armoured vehicles, radar systems, communication equipment, parked aircraft, fuel storage facilities, etc. It is also effective in long-range sniping, counter sniping and ordnance disposal roles.

DEVELOPMENT OF VIDHWANSAK :

Vidhwansak is developed on the model of Denel NTW-20, a South African anti-materiel rifle developed by Denel Mechem in the 1990s. In fact, Denel Land Systems was contracted to supply weapon systems for the Indian Armed Forces, including anti-materiel rifles and self-propelled howitzers. However, following allegations that it had paid kickbacks to secure deal for anti-materiel rifles, Denel was black-listed by the Indian Government. Subsequently, the Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli (OFT), in association with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), began developing indigenous anti-material rifle called Vidhwansak, which borrowed heavily from the Denel NTW-20. The development of Vidhwansak was completed in November 2005.

DESIGN :

Vidhwansak is a manually operated, rotating bolt-action rifle. The barrel along with the receiver recoil inside the chassis frame against a damping system. The rifle is fed from a detachable box magazine that is inserted from the left side. The rifle can be quickly disassembled and carried in two man-portable packs, each weighing about 12 to 15 kg. A muzzle brake is fitted on the end of the barrel which absorbs an estimated 50-60% of recoil. This is further supplemented by a buffered slide in the receiver. Vidhwansak is equipped with an 8X magnification, long-eye-relief telescopic sight with parallax adjustment. A 12X ballistic scope can also be attached.

ADVANTAGE :

Vidhwansak AMR is one of few firearms to support 3 calibers with quick interchangeability (without completely disassembling and reworking the weapon). The Vidhwansak can be easily converted between the three calibers – 12.7x108mm, 14.5x114mm and 20x82mm, by replacing the barrel, bolt, magazine and scope, which takes about 1 minute in the field, without the need for any specialized tools.

SPECIFICATIONS OF 3 VARIANTS :

The rifle is magazine (3 rounds) fed, and reloaded through manual bolt action. Here are the specifications of 3 variants :

1.
Ammunition 12.7×108mm
Weight. 25 kg
Muzzle Velocity 845m/s
Effective Range. 1800 m
Length. 1.7 m

In a first, women serving in the police and CRPF will soon don customised body armour, also known as Full Body Protectors (FBP).Till date, they had to make do with gear designed for their male counterparts.”In police the gear we often use is male dominant but now with this new gender specific gear women would be able to perform their duties with much more ease,” said senior police officer Suman Nulwa, incharge of Delhi Police training school.

Most of the women officers NDTV spoke to had problems with the gear they wore while tackling law and order. “Helmet is a crucial gear. Rarely helmets fit women as they are custom made for men. It was a long standing demand,” said an IPS officer who tackled Nirbhaya protestors in Delhi.

A woman CRPF officer posted in Kashmir said: “Till now we were given small size of men and had to really struggle to make it fit but now with this new gear our combativeness will go up.”

The full body armour includes shoulder pads, arm guards, front and back shields, among other parts. Earlier body gear was ill-suited for female personnel and could not provide the proper protection required.

“The confidence level of women who are deputed in law and order will go up. They would be able to move around with ease and thus would be able to do their duty in much better manner,” says another officer posted in Valley.

The idea to provide gender specific gear was first mooted at the National Conference for Women in police, an official at the Ministry of Home Affairs said.

“Subsequently, the issue was flagged in Lok Sabha while discussing the problems faced by women in Police and Armed Forces,” the official added.

A committee headed by Anupam Kulshreshtha, IG Provisioning of CRPF, was set up to expedite the process.

The CRPF, in close association with DIPAS (Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences) and Defence Research Organisation (DRDO), took over two years to design the customised gear.

The scientists at DIPAS studied women jawans of CRPF’s Rapid Action Force before designing the body gear. The body gear was unveiled in Delhi by Director General CRPF Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar in presence of Director General Life Sciences AK Singh, Director DIPAS Bhuvnesh Kumar, and scientists of DRDO and senior officers of CRPF.

Home Ministry draws up proposal for Marine Police Force, to be sent for cabinet approval next month
In a bid to provide a boost to India's coastline security, the Ministry of Home Affairs has charted a plan to form a new armed force - Central Marine Police Force - and will send the final proposal to the cabinet this month for approval, a source in the MHA said.

"Unlike other central armed police forces, the Central Marine Police Force will have its own cadre, rules, manual, Act, infrastructure and would be headed by a Director-General rank officer", IANS quoted a senior ministry official as saying.

The Central Marine Police Force will be responsible for safeguarding India's vast coastline of 7,516 km spanning 13 states, 1197 islands and a couple of Union territories.

According to media reports, when Rajiv Gauba was the Home Secretary, he pushed to expedite the process of constituting the force and had raised the matter at many internal security meetings.

The proposal to draw up the Marine Force was made in 2016, however, the recent threats to the Indian coastline by Pakistan-based terrorist groups prompted the Intelligence agencies to force the Home ministry to speed up the process.

A coastal security phase is already in place since its implementation in 2005 under which 200 coastal police stations are operational . 204 boats, 30 jetties, 284 four-wheelers, 554 two-A wheelers, 97 check-posts, 58 out-posts, and 30 barracks have been allotted to protect the Indian coastline.

Currently, A three-tier coastal security ring comprising of State Coastal Police, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Indian Navy are responsible to defend India's coastline.
