NEW DELHI: As the Indian Navy celebrates 50 years of its submarine operations, it has released footage of INS Kalvari - India's deadliest Scorpene class submarine - undergoing sea trials. The French-designed submarine was commissioned into the Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month.

The video shows INS Kalvari's state of the art operations centre and how the crew manages this "deadly predator", which is aptly named after the tiger shark. It begins with footage of the submarine being built by Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai and then shows INS Kalvari on its maiden sortie.

After precise coordination from the crew, and a good look through the periscope, the Captain gives the order for the submarine to dive, and effortlessly she does. The video also shows a demonstration of how the submarine locks on to a moving target and destroys it using an Exocet anti-ship missile.

The heart of the Kalvari's weapons system is SUBTICS or Submarine Tactical Integrated Combat System suite which processes information from the sonars onboard the submarine in detecting targets which can then be engaged with torpedoes or missiles.

INS Kalvari is the most modern non-nuclear submarine in the Navy and is powered by an extremely silent diesel-electric motor making it very difficult to detect underwater. The submarine is armed with heavy weight torpedoes and anti-ship missiles. The submarine can launch torpedoes both while submerged or on the surface.

Six Scorpene-submarines are being built by Mazagon Dock Limited as a part of Project-75 of the Indian Navy. The remaining five boats of the Project 75 will be delivered by the yard to the Navy by 2020. India has just about 15 submarines, a mix of Russian-origin Kilo class vessels and German HDW submarines. China has four times as many.

The first Kalvari, commissioned in 1967, was also the first submarine of the Indian Navy. It was decommissioned on May 31, 1996 after nearly three decades of service.

Testing is not an issue because french and Brazilian navies already ordered F21 HWTs.
The F21 was developed as a serious counterpart and replacement for Black Shark torpedo. The F21 shares too many similarities with the Black Shark, including an electric motor driven by an aluminium silver-oxide battery.

For procurement and Induction: Its developmental trials are recently completed and 2 months ago, DCNS also offered it for IN's subs (scorpene class). So, it should not take more time to seal the deal. Most possibly, we will have F21 deal clubbed with the P75 extension (3 more scorpene class subs) in near future.
I hope you are right!!! (y)

I don't understand your fascination with imports when indigenous Varunastra is available. though the submarine version is not available yet, it is undergoing trials and that is the reason India is delaying the buying of imported torpedoes.

Just like scorpene submarine was languishing for over 10 years since the contract was signed by Vajpayee in 2004 but immediately sprung to action recently the torpedoes will also spring to action soon. Anyways, the ship launched varunastra is already inducted and hence the technology already is demonstrated. Some integration and fine tuning for submarines is left. Given a couple years time, that too will be done

So P75i - proposed 6 subs under SP model gets converted to 3 scorpene with AIP,

I hope more than adequate measures are taken to upgrade the systems that might have compromised with previous data leaks ..
Leaks are a closed case. French and indians admit that.
The "leaks" were about old Scorpene model, only marketing infos. It's like to say a fighter radar works in "X" band.

MDL launches India’s Third Scorpene Class Submarine, ‘Karanj’

India’s third Scorpene class submarine, ‘Karanj’, being built under license by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for the Indian Navy (IN), was launched earlier today. As we have analysed before, India’s diesel-electric submarine build capabilities have been revived via the Scorpene Class license build program, and the launch of the Karanj serves to further underline this fact.

After being brought out in a submarine launch pontoon from drydock, Karanj was then towed to Mumbai Port Trust, where it was allowed to slip into the water. Karanj will now undergo rigorous trials and tests, both in harbour and at sea before it is commissioned into the IN. As such, Karanj is the third in a series of six Scorpene Class submarines being built by MDL in collaboration with France’s Naval Group (formerly DCNS) .

Indigenous AIP module for submarines undergoing trialsSunday, March 18, 2018

The indigenous Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) module, which enhances the ability of submarines to stay under water, is in an advanced stage of trials, a senior officer of the Navy said on Friday. It is being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). All Scorpène submarines will be equipped with it in due course.

“The DRDO AIP is in an advanced stage of experimental trials. Once proven on shore, it has to be tested on a marine platform,” Vice-Admiral Srikanth said, speaking at the launch of a four-part series by the Discovery channel on Indian submariners to commemorate 50 years of the Navy’s underwater arm.

Asked whether the Navy would order three additional Scorpène submarines, Vice-Admiral Srikanth said a decision would be made after the current project was completed. “Yes, there is speculation, and even demand, to have three additional submarines at Mazagon Dock Limited. Since we already have the production line, along with expertise, the option can be looked into. But first, the existing project should complete on time.”

Earlier, the Navy planned to install the AIP module on the fifth and sixth submarines. But delays in development meant it could not be done before the last two submarines were launched.

The first Scorpene submarine Kulvari has joined the Navy. It will go for a normal refit in 2023. The next two submarines are in various stages of sea trials. Under a revised plan, the AIP module will be installed on the submarines during upgrades. However, it is a complex and costly task.

Six Scorpene submarines are being made at Mazagon Dock Limited under technology transfer from France.

Indo-French naval exercises ‘Varuna 2018’ kick-off at MPT - Times of India

Vasco: The Indian Navy will get an opportunity to put its recently inducted Scorpene-class submarine, the INS Kalvari, through its paces and simultaneously gain from the French navy’s operational know-how during the Indo-French naval exercises, Varuna 2018. The bilateral maritime exercises began on March 19 at the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), Vasco, with the harbor phase, and will continue over the next two months.
THe INS Kalvari, a conventional diesel-electric submarine, was commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in mid-December 2017 and has been designed by French firm DCNS.

Naval sources said the Indian Navy is keen to enhance INS Kalvari’s operations for anti-surface warfare (attacking surface ships) and anti-submarine warfare (destroying submarines) in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, especially since Chinese submarines have been foraying into the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Over the past two years, People Liberation Army Navy submarines are frequently present in the IOR, making periodic forays into the Arabian Sea.

“Maritime security is a priority of our defence and security policy, alongside the fight against terrorism,” joint commander of the French naval forces deployed in the Indian ocean rear admiral Didier Piaton said. “As a strong symbol of the strategic partnership, the Varuna exercises aim at strengthening the common knowledge and the interoperability of both, French and Indian navies.”

France has brought its nuclear attack submarine FS Perle and the anti-submarine warfare frigate Jean de Vienne for the exercises.

“The Jean De Vienne is ready for operational know-how exchanges with the three Indian vessels participating in the exercise — INS Mumbai, INS Trikand and INS Kalvari,” Piaton said. “For the next four days, our sailors will evolve through different scenarios conducted during a combined anti-submarine exercise, air defence exercise, firing, asymmetric warfare and other exercises.”
“Maritime cooperation between France and India will be crucial to maintain the safety of international sea lanes for unimpeded commerce and communication in accordance with international law, for building maritime domain awareness and for greater coordination in regional and international fora in the region,” said flag officer commander Western fleet rear admiral MA Hampiholi.

The navies of India and France will hold the bilateral maritime exercises in the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and South Western Indian Ocean till May.
The Indian Navy’s P8-I anti-submarine aircraft, Dornier maritime patrol aircraft and Mig 29K fighter aircraft will also participate in Varuna 2018.

India should order 3 More scorpenes with barracuda subsystems & Indian AIP + right to install Indian systems too..

Just like how su 30 mki is being deliberated ..

It's more than time to do that. The 5th unit is already partially made....
No more order = lack of skill in the shipyard.
