GTRE Kaveri Engine

How many times do we have to reiterate this? Project was closed a long back.
Everybody seem to think the partial improvements done to the screeching problem or single crystal blade casting effort all were for kaveri. These are obvious side projects some aimed at stabilising the KDE version and some as TD projects. Plenty also seem to think there was genuine chance of LCA powered by kaveri somehow.

There is news that brahmos Aerospace is building afterburner section for KDE, any insights?

Then why Brahmos Aerospace is manufacturing after burner engine??

Possibly for some improvement in performance or stabilising, plenty of GTRE orders given to industry in last few years are actually from work scope quite a while long ago like 5-6 years ago pending job. As we all know the original kaveri program was closed officially for the main purpose ie powering LCA. But that was not adequate ie we got stuck at 80kn class engine which was not enough for LCA purpose. So although the main goal was not achievable, but it should not stop GTRE from exploring to stabilise the performance and sort out the teething problems , some were listed in before I think. The digital fuel flow controller design work , afterburner etc these would be GTRE internal effort, these can go on to better the technology base established there. This would have no relation with trying to put kaveri onto one LCA testbed.

No, I know very little of the subject so can not tell anything.

A wargame was conducted by Insighteon Consulting in 2022 involving retired DRDO senior scientists, leaders from the Public Sector like ISRO, HAL, NAL, GTRE and Private Industry like Godrej Aerospace, Paninian India and Bharat Forge, academia, retired defence officers, bureaucrats, diplomats and members of various think tanks. In that wargame there was mention of a redesigned Kaveri engine program with desired thrust of 50/76 kN for FUFA ( Futuristic Unmanned Fighter Aircraft).

The thing is until Govt/MoD gives green signal for renewed effort on kaveri, the case will remain closed. Even with all the recommendation and lobbying by GTRE and academic scientists, until those in power allow for reopening of this project, it won't happen. This much is clear.
Partial tech improvement won't exactly bring kaveri back and now the obvious attention is towards the global partner jv route. So lets see whatever happens.

How genuine is the news of BAPL designing & developing the AFB? As of now it's only the administration of this forum's fav site I D R W reporting on it. Nothing on the BAPL website too or anywhere else. Any confirmation on this bit of news?

The government is ready to fund a big amount on R&D for DRDO. So I believe the research institute will try to take it as a study subject to create a new case study based on GTRE guidelines... students and researchers who will be working with basic stipends, e.g., weight reduction techniques, heat management, etc., but with very limited funds, maybe the IISC guys can run their hands on top of it.

There is no separate project, but they must be spending a smaller amount on some internal technology development. It has been almost a decade since the project was closed. They had enough time for incremental improvements. It could be making a case for the Kaveri revival project.

The news is based on tenders, which apparently Brahmos Aerospace won. People who follow tenders reported it.

India gave up on semiconductor tech (SCL) and is now so far behind that it will take a hail mary. Let's hope history isn't repeated with indigenous engine tech -- hopefully the government incentivizes private industry to take lead.

Failure is not a mistake. It's giving up, that India should be ashamed about.

India will build up a domestic semiconductor capability. But it is unlikely to reach the bleeding edge for the foreseeable future. That capability will only be with Taiwan, Korea, US and maybe China if they can get EUV working (unlikely in 5 years, by when world will be even more ahead).

No I do not know , and its not like the afterburner was made up to notch before. If there were teething issues which would have prompted GTRE to remake the afterburner section by some amendments to the technical literature and spec, it is not exactly new work for kaveri either just extension of the previous work. Such a side project is done via GTRE internal allocation of funding, won't need new approval or justification for MoD.

There were multiple prototypes and some were sent for tests abroad. So its obvious after testing depending on data and condition of the entire engine sections, there could also be need for certain sections being re-made , after all you can not keep the said test prototype engine in that damaged condition. You would need to refurb the damaged part. In this case it could be such a situation.

Above cases are just some of plausible reasons why they would have to place order for certain sections again despite project closure if needed. Not any confirmed information.
