Nah. Why stop at M2000 and Rafale. Go for F35,NGFA electronics on M21 and Gnats. Only IAF fanboys can imagine that wildly.
MiG 21 & MiG 29 belong to 2 different class of fighters apart from the fact that the former is SE & latter TE.
SE MiG-21 in the Indian scenario is ideal for QR air patrol & interception. I don't think any other jet in our inventory including the Tejas has the kind of QR time as the MiG-21 until we induct the Mk-1As .
Further the MiG-21 though very fast isn't manoeuvrable enough to function as a classic dogfighter as it wasn't designed for that role , merely shoot & scoot That's the reason why it doesn't have much of a combat range . Though having stated that it can perform as a dogfighter too just not as efficiently as one built for such a role .
TE MiG-29 is more of an air superiority fighter & while it's a fine aircraft it hasn't aged well in today's scenario . It's upgrade , long overdue , would bring it on par with it's other 4th Gen peers though only just about.
Why should one fight with the weapon which one doesn't know how to operate well? What you just mentioned is eternal stupidity.
Yes why stop at M2K go beyond, that's what planning is but no " I am infested with foreign maal syndrome" right?
What are aerodynamic characteristics of 3rd gen fighter kindly elaborate? India did upgrade mig 21, but it's frame got old, metal loses it's strength due to weathering and worn and torn and hence not safe to fly. Otherwise no issues.

It is Not supposed to be a QR fighter
We need MIG 29 for CAPs and for phasing out MIG 21s

Think Maruti 800 & Alto in purely dummy terms . How long can you retrofit features of the Alto into the M-800 ? Is it feasible or even advisable ? Being a technically oriented & educated person if you start asking such basic questions , what kind of a response do you expect ?

If I’m good at archery that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to go to war with a bow and arrows. It will be suicide. You go to war with those weapons appropriate for fight and not those you like most or good at.
So Mig 21 with Israel sourced EW pods that costs a bomb is Vishuddh Desi Maal as per your “logic” ?

India did retrofit the mig 21 upto the max limit. They made Mercedes c class out of maruti 800. The point is after constantly upgrading the air frame it gets heavier. Then there is a limit.
You can redesign the airframe with similar profiling similar design to accommodate the sensors. What it needs is research.
Problem is We are not able to develop an engine to fit inside the similar fuselage exactly like in Mig21.
They've developed alternatives. Ours was the LCA. The F-16 is a very good QR FA. The French use the Mirages.
Pls check what the J-7 & it's entire series of derivatives is all about. They even exported it's variants to Paxtan among other nations.
Eventually the Mk-1 will be upgraded to Mk-1A standard & the latter will be your QR replacement for the MiG-21 , 3 decades too late .
The MiG-21s are used for QR , Air Patrol including BARCAPs. That's precisely what the Mk-1A is designed to do & intended for among other roles.
I never said it wasn't just not what it used to be in it's heyday. BTW - this isn't my opinion but the opinions of those who matter - veterans , defence experts , serving personnel , amateur experts , etc gleaned from readings on BR , Twitter & other SM .The Upgraded MIG 29 is very good fighter

The airframes are already 4 decades old. How much more time do you think it'd endure ? This is the starting point. Once you clear this hurdle , we can move on to tackle the other problems & discuss possible solutions.

Chinese use J7series/F6 export version ( locally made and somewhat improved version of Mig21 which they are phasing out anyway) and J10 for the same role.
Only if we could get few hundreds of BVR capable F16s from USAF reserves at an attractive price just to immediately retire and replace all these old junks. F16 are perfect fit for this role. @randomradio

The First Mk 1A Squadron will also be ready by 2025

Not just New, it will turn into a F22 raptor or Mercedes-C class equivalent as per him.
@STEPHEN COHEN Mig 29 is an Twin Engine Air superiority fighter that is highly maintenance intensive and therefore not suitable for deployment at FOBs as QRFA, as these FOBs lack facilities to maintain these type of fighter jets. Also like LCA mk 1 it lacks range required for BARCAP etc.
