INFORMATION EUROPE 1 – 861 cars burned in France on New Year’s Eve
January 2, 2021
According to information collected by Europe 1, 861 cars were set on fire during the night of New Year’s Eve, a figure that is very much lower compared to 2020, where we had counted in the night of December 31 to January 1, 1,457 burnt cars. The health context and the curfew may explain this decrease.
INFO EUROPE 1861 cars were burnt in France on New Year’s Eve. This figure does not appear in the press release of the Minister of the Interior on the toll of incidents on New Year’s night. In a note addressed to the prefects, Gérald Darmanin had also expressly requested that these figures not be communicated locally “to avoid any phenomenon of competition”, wrote the minister. But according to information gathered by Europe 1, the police and gendarmerie services have identified 861 vehicles burned down on New Year’s Eve throughout the country.
This figure is down by 41% compared to the record toll of last year where 1,457 cars had burned, revealed Europe 1. It is the first time in five years that the total number of vehicles burned on New Year’s Eve reached such a threshold. It should be noted that the configuration of this New Year’s Eve was unprecedented with for the first time a curfew in effect from 8 p.m. and the presence of 100,000 police and gendarmes on the ground.
