India has given Clearance to start Country’s fourth active fighter jet project recently which too will be powered by American F-414 afterburning turbofan engine, making it India’s third jet to be powered by an American engine made by General Electric company. India’s Tejas Mk1A jets will be powered by F404-GE-IN20 afterburning engines and Mk2 and TEDBF will be powered by F414-GE-INS6 engines.

IAF and Indian Navy will be looking at 300+ Jets which will be powered by American engines and equipping nearly 40% of your fighter jet fleet from a single-source vendor is also gamble which can backfire on India if the country doesn’t work in developing alternative engines for this fleet. Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria in recent media interview urged DRDO to develop a local engine with a foreign vendor and is it likely Defence ministry too will agree to fast track successor to the Kaveri program soon even though previous talks with French and American engine tech giant have failed to conclude a joint venture proposal.

Developing modern-day afterburning engines is not easy but Japan has shown the way by successfully developing the XF9-1 engine which will be used to power its 5th Generation fighter jet even though the plane is still in the drawing board. IAF has allowed DRDO to use F414-GE-INS6 engines on the first 40 AMCA Mk1 jets produced which again shows India’s dependence on American single-source vendor. India needs to start investing in the development of local engines soon so that technology is matured in the next 10-15 years and is ready to enter production for the AMCA fleet and later be used to replace engines from Tejas Mk1A, Mk2, and TEDBF fleet.

Instead of depending on another US jet engine for AMCA,we should explore this japanese jet engine. A true fifth generation Jet engine with immense thrust & electrical power,at comparable size of GEf110 & G3 F414.Japanese Air Self-Defence Force News and Discussion

@vstol Jockey @Saaho shall we use xf9 n our AMCA? AMCA , project is in too early stage and we can easily change the engine i guess. The immense electrical power & thrust may turnd AMCA a deadly platform. After all our LCA,tedbf all depending up on american jet engin, personally i feel we should choose a non american engine on amca and we are far away from creating a jet engine like even a f414 engine by our own.

Yeah, that's may happen. But we can go for try,Japan may sell this to India in the new changed political situation if we didn't ask for unrealistic things like techtransfer.
Have you see this entire table,it's a 7/9 table? The whole table may not be visible in mobile. I have made a comparison chart of Xf9,gef414,Lavery,PW f119( f22 engine),PW f100 & GE f110.
Based on dimensions & the thrust , electrical power Xf9 is a superior jet engine than f22's ,at least on paper.

Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has been given go head by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to start work on New Twin Engined Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) jet as per latest media reports, Senior officials from both Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Navy (IN) were present at the meeting and both have agreed to commit 150 jets jointly before the MOD agreed to give Go head clearance for the New ADA project.

Nearly 30 years after India first began a quest for building its own aero-engine for the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft and three years after the project was abandoned, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is all set to revive the programme.

Top officials from the Indian defence R&D organisation have confirmed that a call on getting the project revived will be taken at a meeting planned at the end of March, in which all the stakeholders will participate.

By the way it's just a starter to start the turbofan engines....
Please refrain from speaking about things you have no knowledge about otherwise it ends up misleading others.

That HAL starter kit is 20 KW short of what the Americans use in F22 .

The HAL starter kit does not just start the engine but it provides 110 KW of power to all electronic subsystems in the tejas.

By contrast the Japanese kit provides 180 KW imagine two of them in twin engine setting can easily provide power for laser on board their fifth Gen fighter jet. Same is true for F22 in twin engine setting with 130+130=260 KW.

Now Rolls Royce is developing a kit which will be embedded inside the engine to save space and weight for their upcoming tempest fighter jet and will be much superior to all other kits.

Perhaps that explains why GoI was sitting on the proposal by SAFRAN as it didn't go beyond suggestions of GTRE utilising the M-88 core & perhaps SAFRAN retaining the IPR thus making it's utilisation subject to royalty. That & the hefty fee they were asking for with no tangible long term benefits in terms of ToT or IPR.Wonder what happens to off sets committed by SAFRAN now? I just pray that something materialises and we get the technical know-how to build the goddamn jet engine.
The article is written by Huma Siddiqui, so it's not written by a completely ignorant person, I have read her other articles, it is unlike our mainstream media on defence.

From our forum, I think we are going for both engines, Safran helping with our Kaveri.
RR for a new 110KN.

I hope we pursue both to avoid delay / failure.
