Shivalik-class & Nilgiri-class (Project 17 A/B) Frigates : Discussions

Yeah but NGC is multi-role vs say the P-28 which has the same tonnage but lacks anti-ship armament.

In fact, NGC will reportedly have CODAG propulsion which puts it firmly in the FFG category.

NGC is the direct successor to the Kamorta.

We were supposed to have 8 more Kamortas, but the requirements were rehashed and we got the NGC.

True. But NGC specs are higher than even the Talwar class in almost every aspect.

Kamorta and NGC are oversized for corvettes due to the need to carry extra fuel for the ASW mission.

Otherwise, their air defenses are not meant to be frigate-class, only centered around self-defense. So that's the main difference between corvettes and frigates. But technological improvements have allowed it to catch up with the Talwar class. It's kinda like how LCA Mk1A now matches the MKI in the DCA role.

The difference between Kamorta and NGC is the NGC carries AShMs too, primarily for self-defense. But it has sufficient capital to act as a frigate in the ASuW role.

Ultimately, it is all just semantics. NGC has/will have all the key markers of a FFG but will still be called a corvette.

Glad that someone from this group is now what i used to tell fore quite long, LCA is more modern and survivable than MKI in contested airspace today.

It has to do more with radar and RCS than flight performance though. MKI MLU will take the crown back from LCA.

That's for sure. Just like Shivalik and Nilgiri are destroyer-equivalents compared to Talwar.

This is more about bookkeeping. The IN is building bigger ships, but GoI restricts numbers based on class.

So they can have 15 destroyers, 24 frigates, and 35 corvettes. Replace Kolkata class with NGD, start calling Kolkata a frigate, and Nilgiri a corvette. Tinker with some weapons numbers and you get to meet GoI's requirements. Easy.

The IN has been building bigger ships lately with greater range and endurance, even skimping on weapons load outs. This is mainly to reduce the logistics/re-supply burden and improve time on station.

Until the FSS class ships arrive, the IN has just 2 Shakti class refueling tankers to rely on. Unlike the Russians, we don't use commercial ships for topping up at sea.

Calling Kolkata a corvette would be a stretch though.

Yeah. The supply burden is lower with a larger ship. But the Kamorta and NGC in particular are specifically designed for higher endurance for ASW. But the more dedicated NGMV does not need endurance for ASuW role.

Nilgiri. Kolkata would be a frigate, which is the case for the US.

Any more information on this yet?

Standardized VLS allows for more cells on the larger P-17B compared to P-17A. That's about all we know today.

My guess is all Indian ADS from here on 'cause they are calling it NGF, so it's gonna be designed to work seamlessly with NGD and NGC.

**While the government is tight-lipped over the DAC meeting, HT learns that Singh will also take a call on approving the construction of seven more Project 17 B stealth frigates at a cost of ₹70,000 crore. The new frigates will weigh around 8000 tonnes each and are expected to have significant strike capability**

Though no offical confirmation that p17B will be 8000tons.

Can we fit 128 Bhargavastra missile on the new NGC,
Given it needs less space, 128 interceptor will give the NGC more flexibility in today's era threat

Rather than VLS, it's better to put Bhargavastra on a rotating swivel mount launcher like this:

Two such launchers, one on each side, will go a long way in dealing with multiples of close-in swarm threats.
