Shivalik-class & Nilgiri-class (Project 17 A/B) Frigates : Discussions

Nilgiri-class frigates are the first to be built in India using modular block assembly. They are slightly larger than their Project 17 sisters, although crew size has been reduced from 255 to 225. The Project 17A frigates displace 6,670 tons fully loaded and measure 489 feet overall, with a 58-foot beam and 17-foot draft. While many of the systems remain similar, the newer frigates feature enhanced signature reduction with a primary EL/M-2248 MF-STAR active electronically scanned array radar housed in an integrated mast.

The Project 17A frigates do not carry the Shtil-1 SAM, and instead of the short-range Barak-1 missiles, they are armed with 32 Barak-8 medium-range SAMs for air defense. The frigates also are powered by different variants of the LM2500 gas turbines and diesels. Planning is already underway on the next evolution of frigates, tentatively named Project 17B, for service in the 2030s.

I would assume there is a significant amount of machinery beneath as in the case of a flush deck.
In modern warships like frigates and destroyers, the front (bow) is the emptiest
back (stern) is the 2nd "emptiest" area by design, while the midsection (midships) is the most densely packed.

While it will most likely require structural modifications to fit in more VLS Cells, but the info in its construction being a modular design, I'd like to beleive navy has considered future expansion in its VLS Cells.

This can be said destroyers as well. Our destroyers weighs 7700 tons. What is the main difference between Kolkatta class and this one.
(P17A)Nilgiri class is more compact, having less density of arnament for surface strike/anti-ship strike role & less density potential for anti-sub armament, but in terms of sensors( radars,EW, sonars etc.) ,air defence armament it doesn't lack anything compared to p15A/B.

P17A(nilgiri class) is our tier 1 combatant just like p15A/B(kolkata & Vishakapatnam class) destroyers.

Major difference for P-17A is 1 helo vs 2 and 8 vs 16 Brahmos VLS. Also, P-17/A only carry LWTs vs HWTs on the Delhi/Kolkata/Visakhapatnam classes.

In terms of tonnage, it is true the INs ship classification criteria has changed a lot since the 1980s.

For example, the upcoming NGCs are classified as corvettes at 3500t displacement.

Heavy torpedoes + 16 Brahmos + 4 AK-630s + 2 helicopters. Leading role in offensive missions.
Light torpedoes + 8 Brahmos + 2 AK-630s + 1 helicopter. Support role and ASW.

Just hi-lo mix for the sake of affordability and scalability.

P-17B will have more firepower than Nilgiri.

The USN would call both frigates.
