Indian Navy kicks off Rs 50,000 crore lethal submarine project, wants 500 km strike range cruise missiles on them
The Indian Navy has initiated the process to acquire six lethal submarines under the ambitious Project-75 India likely to cost over Rs 50,000 crore.

The Navy has initiated the tender process by issuing the initial Expression of Interest to foreign vendors willing to take part in the mega programme.

Under Project 75-India, the Navy wants to build six conventional diesel-electric submarines which would be almost 50 per cent bigger than the under-construction Scorpene class submarines being built at the Mazagon Dockyards Limited in Mumbai.

"The draft EOI has been issued to the foreign vendors who would be taking part in the competition along with the probable Indian partners who have also been invited to give suggestions on the strategic partnership policy under which the boats would be built," Sources in the Navy told ANI.

As per the requirements stated by the maritime force, it wants the submarines to be equipped with heavy-duty firepower as it wants the boats to have at least 12 Land Attack Cruise Missiles (LACM) along with Anti-Ship cruise missiles (ASCM).

Sources said that the Navy has also specified that the submarines should also be able to carry and launch 18 heavyweight torpedoes in the sea.

Compared with the Scorpene, the firepower required in the next line of submarines is many times more than what is being put on the Scorpenes which have the heavyweight torpedoes and the Exocet surface to surface missiles as their main weapons.

After clearing the procurement of these submarines in the Defence Acquisition Council, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has put a Navy officer as the in-charge of the project.

An empowered project committee has been formed with the Navy's Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition as the head of the panel including several other Joint Secretaries as its members.

Navy wants to have a mix of conventional and nuclear submarines in its fleet to manage its area of responsibility stretching from the Malacca Straits to the Indian Ocean Region.

While the Indian Navy has more than 100 submarines and surface warships, the Pakistani Navy has around 20 of these. However, the Indian Navy is building assets for tackling the Chinese Navy which operates occasionally in the IOR region.

Submarine Launched Cruise Missile integration IN asking for P75I is not Brahmos. A few years ago DRDO started work on SLCM project which is separate from Nirbahy.

People here are expecting new SSKs to store twelve 1.5ton missiles to be fired from torpedo tubes :ROFLMAO:
Folks, Brahmos is not the answer to everything its 42.

Why is everything named "Rudra" ? Rudra the attack helicopter, Rudra-I missile, Rudra-II, Rudra-II M,Rudra M-III, Rudra-this, Rudra-that. They don't seem to be linked projects. We are horrible at naming things.:cautious:
There's the Arudhra radar.

Navy needs a modern low cost (compared to Brahmos) , long range(1000+ km) land attack capability, like Klub or Tomahawk or Mdcn series.

Why is there a seperate program for SLCM ??

Making a SLCM variant of Nirbhay should have been the logical approach .

Weight, size, lower requirements of range etc

Smaller Ship launch/coastal defense anti-ship missile is also under development.

A variant of nirbhay still can make its way into SSN fleet.

The article says, France, Germany, Russia & Sweden are in race for P75i, to which Spain now wants to add in last minute..
What about Japan?? can anyone elaborate on it, are they in the race, if not why?
Navantia S80 is : late, over weighted, a bad evolution of Scorpene, equipped with a US combat system (exportable???). A bad solution.
Sweden A26 is not a mature product.
The game is between Germany, France and Russia.
Japan.... the Japan subs are heavy, costly, made of a lot of US subsystems. Maybe there is an export issue (for Australia, member of the big five, it was not a problem, but for India probably).

Russians don't have a AIP which can be exported as of yet. Their SSK programs other than 636M ain't progressing too well too.

Its between Naval Group, TKMS and SAAB only.

Seems there were interested in selling to Australia.

Ex Australia prime minister were regretting missed opportunity.

Obviously they were, but they haven't shown much interest in P75I from start.

I think this is due to the cost factor mainly. We are estimating a cost of 45-50k crores, or not more than 7billion USD for 6 submarines. They would have analysed and found it impossible to build 6 Soryu derivatives in India at such a cost.

They would not have factored in price escalation in mid way, like we usually do..

Our government won't fix suitable price from the start.

Count A-26 in. It will be a much more mature product as the tender progresses. Plus it will be a much more modern design than the Scorpene.

There was a special relationship between the Japanese prime minister and him... nothing surprising.
Remember the Gripen choice in Switzerland : a pure political choice, made against the army top brass... broken just after.

Why? because newer? They can't used the deterrence and SSN french fleet experience, and didn't study and produce so many subs than german.
It's as for now a paper project.
Remember the spain S80 ..... a powerfull design on paperboard. And only on paperboard.
