Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launching System

MBRLs are mostly used as area denial weapons, i.e., they will wipe out everything in a 1 km by 1 km area. For precision strikes, we do have enough missiles above the 300 km range. A missile similar to the MTC 300 is going to be NASM MR. We can make a land attack version using the same missile.

We do not have ATCAM equivalent missile right now, and NASM based missile won't be ATCAM equivalent.

I was comparing NASM MR with MTC 300 ...ATCAM is a 300 km range missile, and DRDO is working on similar missiles. we may need to wait and see the specs of newly designed missiles of Pinka.

That is not how you compare. NASM MR is comparable to Harpoon which are with turbojet engine. ATACMS uses solid rocket propellant and its twice as big. There isn't much logic in adding subsonic anti-ship missiles to a rocket launching system, as both are used for very different purposes.

For mobile naval defense. Pinaka compatible anti-ship missiles would be a huge seller in Vietnam, Phillipines and even taiwan. A cheap 300km option for coastal defense. It would be pretty useful andaman and even pagongtso lake against chinese patrol boats. Plus the pinaka platform is quite flexible and mobile. If not nasm mr something cheaper like the yj-83 or the brazillian mtm-av based missile. That is smaller in size can go subsonice and reach 290+km. With mtcr requirements so export friendly.

Thats coastal defence missile nothing to do with MBRL like Pinaka.

Flexibility of Pinaka will have to do with the role adjacent to rockets. You can always add a Anti ship missile but thats mostly for marketing. Its either or situation.

I compared NASM MR with MTC 300 which is a Brazilian Cruise missile

Another absurd RFI from Indian Army. They want to put BM-30 Smerch sized rockets on a common 6x6 pinaka platform. How is this possible? Look at the length and weight difference. Dont they have common sense!?.

They should be asking for max range of 130-150 km and 300mm caliber. Dont specify the weight and length!. If they do that they will get something like EXTRA which is of the same length as pinaka and 300mm.

Do you really think 300 KM range is feasible.

As reported earlier in the media

That would make it a Missile
what exactly is the equivalent option used by other countries look like at such ranges ? MBRLS unguided rocket is for short range theater battlefield use. Anything that needs to fly over 50-60km away and hit something fixed need a guidance. From a standing point horizon is like 5-6km max might be even less ? so hit something via unguided rockets even at 20+ km the accuracy is low, aka only work as area denial strike rather than precision strike.

Feasible of course, small solid fuel BM can be achievable if 214mm rocket achieved 75km+ range itself. Can be higher dia, Brahmos booster + 300mm KV can work theoretically. Can be other propulsion too if needed.

The new LRGR rocket will have bell shaped nozzle, compared to existing conical nozzle in all the pinaka rocket versions. General literature show that bell shaped nozzles can provide about 4-12% more thrust. As with such high end stuff, issue is the ablation, high temp gas exiting thru the nozzle end at 3-4mach speed is highly corrosive environment, contains tiny Aluminium oxide particles and cause lot of erosion, the nozzle gets deformed. Hence high quality thermal protective coating and good quality graphite nozzle mfg are vital. Bell shaped nozzles are used in liquid rockets.
