China sends new naval destroyer fleet to Somali waters for escort mission

China's 32nd convoy fleet to the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters set sail from a military port in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang Province on Thursday, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy official WeChat account announced that same day.

The naval fleet includes the guided missile destroyer Xi'an, the missile frigate Anyang and the Gaoyanghu, a comprehensive supply ship.

This will be the first time that the Xi'an and Anyang have participated in an escort mission.

One of the country's new generation of self-developed Type-052C guided missile destroyers, the Xi'an, which entered into service in February 2015, possesses over-the-horizon strike capability at sea.

The Anyang, a domestically developed frigate, entered into service in April 2018 and is capable of attacking surface ships and submarines alone or in conjunction with other naval forces. It also has strong long-range alert and air defense capabilities. It is part of China's new generation of main combat ships.

India's INS 'Kolkata', 'Shakti' to Take Part in Chinese Navy's 70th Anniversary Celebrations

Beijing: Two Indian naval ships — INS 'Kolkata' and 'Shakti' — would take part in the Chinese Navy's 70th anniversary of celebrations later this month.

The two ships are scheduled to visit Chinese port of Qingdao from April 21 to 26 to participate in an International Fleet Review to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, an Indian Embassy press release said here on Sunday.

During the visit, Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Misri long with the Commanding Officer of INS Kolkata, Captain Aditya Hara, will host an on-board reception for the public.

INS Kolkata is the lead ship of the Kolkata-class stealth guided-missile destroyers of the Indian Navy. It lists of armaments reportedly included Brahmos supersonic anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles.

INS Shakti is tanker and supply ship.

The PLA Navy which is fast expanding its fleet including the aircraft carriers as China intensified efforts to increase global presence and influence plans to have grand celebrations to commemorate the event.

China's defence spokesman Col Wu Qian told the media on March 28 that over 60 countries would join the commemorative event for the PLA Navy's 70th founding anniversary on April 23.

It will include various activities, including high-level symposiums, an international fleet inspection, joint military music display, cultural and sports exchanges, among others.

China Plans To Have 8 Type 055 Destroyers

Displacing more than 10,000 tons, the Type 055 is a 180-meter-long, 20-meter-wide guided missile destroyer with 112 vertical launch missile cells capable of launching missiles such as surface-to-air, anti-ship, land-attack and anti-submarine missiles, according to media reports. There are plans of the destroyer being deployed for anti-ballistic missile operations.

"Should the PLA Navy decide to hold another maritime parade in 2029 to mark its 80th anniversary, people may see the three aircraft carrier combat groups with six to eight Type 055 destroyers," Xu Guangyu a senior consultant at the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association said.

The number of vertical launch missile cells is an important indicator of how powerful a warship is. China's Type 052D destroyer has 64 vertical launch missile cells, which is nearly half that of Type 055 destroyer.

US' Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and US' Ticonderoga-class cruiser have 96 and122 respectively, according to media reports. Some experts consider the Type 055 a cruiser instead of a destroyer.

"The Type 055 destroyer can see farther with its active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar system in comparison to the previous destroyers and deal with targets faster, acting as an information center in a fleet," Wei Dongxu, a military expert, said.

A perfect aircraft carrier combat group can me formed by two Type 055s, a submarine, some smaller destroyers and frigates, according to Xu Guangyu, a senior consultant at the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association.

Hoe many of their subs have the actual endurance to operate in IOR for any extended period of time without surfacing near indian territory?Any ideas?
@vstol Jockey @randomradio

They got 14 ssn,but older han class boats are unreliable and nearly useless for such a long range mission. That leaves 11 type 093SSN.
Of the newer diesel subs they got 12 kilo,13 type 39 song,17 type 39a yuan.

The difference between a type 052D (top) and a type 052C. The leading ships of these 2 destroyer classes were put into the water with 9 years apart. When type 052c has only 6 copies, the 24th type 052d series has already appeared, and it is not ready to stop.

Pictures taken by military enthusiasts earlier this week appear to show that construction of China’s first Type 075 amphibious helicopter assault ship is moving quickly.

The images, taken outside the dry dock at Shanghai’s Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard, were circulated on Chinese social media and showed scaffolding around two separate superstructures above the flight deck, suggesting the estimated 40,000 tonne ship may have two islands.

In June, commercial satellite images showed the vessel had a 32-metre wide beam, with bow and stern sections yet to be added. In the most recent pictures the bow of the vessel is clearly visible.

The status of the construction suggested the ship would probably be launched in the next few months, according to Song Zhongping, a Hong Kong-based military affairs commentator.

Song said large landing helicopter docks (LHDs) like the Type 075 could play an even more important role than aircraft carriers in the future, following last month’s defence white paper released in Beijing which named protecting China’s overseas interests as one of the key missions of its military forces.

“LHDs are a central part of a blue water navy, because an LHD has a full range of weapons with a lot more marine troops for potential ground operations, whereas an aircraft carrier is just a mobile airbase,” he said. “Each time the Americans deploy their forces overseas, LHDs always serve as the vanguard.”

The PLA Navy has ordered several LHDs in recent years, at the same time as Beijing’s claim to the disputed South China Sea has been challenged and the relationship with Taiwan strained.

China claims almost all islands and reefs in the South China Sea, many of which are occupied by rival claimants, and reserves the right to use force to reunify Taiwan, which it sees as a breakaway province.

Five Type 071 25,000 tonne amphibious landing dock ships have been launched since 2016, of which three have been commissioned and two are on sea trials.

It is believed China’s first batch of Type 075 craft will consist of three ships. The Type 075 will be the world’s third largest amphibious assault ship, behind only the US Wasp-class (41,000 tonnes) and America-class (45,000 tonnes). It is significantly bigger than Japan’s Izumo-class (26,000 tonnes), and France’s Mistral-class (21,000 tonnes).

The Type 075 will be able to carry up to 30 helicopters, as well as a number of amphibious tanks, armored vehicles, jet boats, and hundreds of marine troops.

Its massive flat deck could also accommodate vertical take-off and landing fighters such as the F-35B. This capability would enable the ship to operate as a light aircraft carrier, in a similar function to the way the US military uses LHDs. However, China currently does not yet have any vertical take-off jets.

Corollary to why it's imperative we seize PoK & cut off Chinese access to the IOR thru Pakistan. The defense of Taiwan begins in the Gulf of Oman. @Austerlitz ; @randomradio

China is also planning to develop an F-35B equivalent, which should become a reality post 2030.

But I wouldn't be too worried about the PLAN for now. They are yet to begin competing with S Korea, Japan and Australia, let alone the monstrous USN.

They will become a threat only after the PLAN starts operating multiple full fledged CBGs. And the Type 075 is not meant to be used in a CBG anyway.

Unfortunately cutting off pok is more of a fetish than reality. Not only do we lack enough diplomatic and economic clout for that until we become a 10 trillion dollar economy ..otherwise if pla mobilizes just a few divisions in tibet all your grand plans will come to a halt...but even if you cut off the land route which is seldom used anyway..it wouldnt stop china from using gwadar as naval base in future ..simply by sea route which is cheaper.Only way to stop them would be to go to war.Good thing is once chinese navy formally enters ior we can formally join quad.If things become heated you could even see an american fleet operating side by side in ior alongside IN out of indian bases and indian navy at diego garcia .But this is a post 2030 scenario. 2030-2040 is a real danger period for us.We must have our china specific ssbns and mirv operationalized by then and finished out NE infra development.

dimensons on the new LHD

The last 2 years have been a really exciting time for China's naval modernization programme! Since 2017 we've seen quite advanced and behemoth ships quickly float out of China. Not to mention all the crazy submarines that have been spotted. Does anybody know the status of the 002 carrier, is it still scheduled to launch next year?
