China commissioned first Type 55 Destroyer today

Looking at the number of corvettes launched... looks like the south China sea is lost..

What do we have brahmos for? Rather that would be an over kill for a corvette. As per wiki, 5 are deployed in south sea, and with that construction rate, they will have max 10-12 in total. Bringing them into IOR is like closing in to their death bed.

Deploy Brahmos in Vietnam and their corvettes are sitting ducks. India needs to invest more on medium range hypersonic cruise missile and ASW

China’s new killer robot ship goes through its first sea trial
China’s new killer robot ship that can carry out anti-submarine and anti-ship missions has undergone its first sea trial, according to a Chinese defence industry magazine.

Called the JARI, the unmanned surface vessel is said to be the world’s first USV with multiple roles – anti-submarine, air defence and surface combat – and powerful weaponry.

The prototype was launched in August and was recently photographed during a sea trial, according to a report in the latest issue of Ordnance Industry Science Technology. It did not give details of when or where the trial took place.

Equipped with an active phased array radar and other advanced electronic systems – similar to those on the US Arleigh Burke-class Aegis destroyer or China’s Type 052D guided-missile destroyer – it has been dubbed the “mini Aegis destroyer”. Its sonar system can track underwater targets 7km (4 miles) away.

The 15-metre (49-foot), 20-tonne (22-short ton) ship is being developed by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) and has a range of 500 nautical miles and a top speed of 42 knots.

Its weaponry gives it the scope to carry out anti-submarine, air defence and anti-ship missions. The drone has a 30mm (one-inch) cannon, close-range air defence missiles, two small surface-to-air and anti-ship missile launchers and two anti-submarine torpedo launchers.

“The JARI USV can be loaded onto an aircraft carrier or amphibious assault ship to provide their strike groups with extra reconnaissance and attack platforms,” the report said.

“When the technology has been developed, these ships will even be able to launch a wolf pack attack on the enemy’s large surface vessel.”

But technological barriers remain, according to the report. They include fast deployment and retrieval, and navigational safety, including during difficult conditions at sea.

The JARI was first revealed in 2018 by its developers at the CSIC, the 716 and 702 research institutes. It drew international attention when they took it to the International Defence Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi last year.

Many other countries are also working on killer drones because they are low-cost, highly mobile, stealthy and can be used to carry out dangerous missions.

The US Navy has deployed several types of USVs for jobs such as minehunting and detecting submarines. It is also working on two large unmanned surface vehicles, or LUSVs.

The 2020 US defence appropriations bill budgeted US$400 million for the two drones that are 200 to 300 feet long, with a displacement of about 2,000 tonnes, under a research and development programme, and the US Navy requested a further US$2.7 billion for eight more of the vessels in the next five years.

The LUSV will be as big as a frigate and able to carry out various unmanned missions, with or without manned surface ships.

“[It] will be capable of semi-autonomous or fully autonomous operation, with operators in-the-loop (controlling remotely) or on-the-loop (enabled through autonomy),” the US Navy said.

Nirbhay O Nirbhay, where art thou?
Sidenote: The design of the next generation destroyers for IN must be undergoing. The keel for first Vizag class destroyer was laid 10 months before the commissioning of first kolkata class destroyer. IN likes to call both these classes as "stealth warships", but they lack a proper flush deck.
I hope they do incorporate a cleaner design. And UVLS is still nowhere to be seen.

I had read somewhere that the VC 1184 missile tracking ship's design is the basis of the design of Project 18 destroyer. No news as such for an UVLS.
DRDO should team up with L&T to develop a UVLS ASAP.

Most of the IN fleets will be sabotaged by Pakistanis or Chinese at the port itself. Chinese have alreadz shown that they are better when it comes to procurement, development of defence be it their 3rd AC.

They have money and they can buy people in Indian Navy or honey trap them. Even if you deploy Vizag Class destroyer most of the times it will be either low on oil or battery short circuit just before the skirmish.

Two of IN subs already met severe accidents and one is in garbage slot without even fighting.

China Launches 2nd Type 075 LHD For The PLAN

China's second amphibious assault ship, a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) known as Type 075, was launched in Shanghai today by Hudong Zhonghua shipyard. The vessel is intended for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy).

China Launches 2nd Type 075 LHD for the PLAN 1
The second Type 075 LHD for the PLAN was launched today at the Hudong Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai.

Pictures shared by local ship spotters on Sina Weibo (a Chinese social media platform) this morning show the construction dock where the second Type 075 was assembled being flooded. Other pictures show the vessel being towed by tug boats next to the first amphibious vessel. This is where the shipyard will continue outfitting work over the next few months.

According to local media, tomorrow will mark the 71st anniversary of the founding of the PLAN.

The first-in-class amphibious vessel, which was launched 6 months ago, and is currently at fitting out stage at the shipyard caught on fire one week ago as we reported here. According to local media, both Type 075 ships’ production schedules have already been affected by the nation-wide factory shutdown following the COVID-19 epidemic. While the fire damage looks superficial on the outside, there is no way to tell what kind of damage was done inside the LHD and if the incident will affect the expected start of sea trials.

About China’s Type 075 LHD

The Chinese Navy officially started development work on the Type 075 in 2011. The project called for a helicopter carrier displacing more than 30,000 tonnes. Its aim is likely to increase the “vertical” amphibious assault capability with the very mountainous East Coast of Taiwan in mind.

As for its specifications, rumors speak of “36,000 tons of displacement”, “capacity of 28 helicopters”, “diesel engine with the 9,000 kW 16PC2-6B” and “four CIWS including two HQ-10 and two H/PJ-11”.

Type 075 compared to similar vessels

While the Type 075 appears to slightly smaller than the U.S. Navy’s LHA, it is larger compared to French or Spanish/Australian LHD equivalents. It is actually pretty close in size to Italy’s future Trieste LHD.

The first Type 075 was constructed in record time (this has become the norm nowadays, for Chinese shipbuilding: extremely fast construction pace that no one can match).

When fully operational, the new Type 075 LHD will bolster the PLAN’s amphibious capabilities, which today rely on the Type 071 LPD design.

In just 5 years, the PLAN has taken a huge lead over the IN.
That is what happens when you have a booming economy and a massive defence budget.
China cut down their Army strength in half to fund their Air Force and Navy.
In India's case, Navy is largely ignored, defence share of Navy coming down from 18% to 12% is proof of that.
Also, the Chinese Navy does not place piecemeal orders, they ordered 20 Type 52D destroyers and 30 Type 54A frigates while we are stuck with ordering 3-4 Destroyers and frigates.
Their shipyards are way more efficient and have adopted modular construction techniques long time ago whereas Project 17A frigates was the first time we adopted modular construction.
Unless the Navy is given greater importance and its budget share isn't increased to 20%, we risk losing our influence in the IOR.

We need the naval budget to double, if we are to compete with the PLAN, which won't happen until after 2025. And that needs to double again after 2030.

So 2022 is now officially out of contention as the year ground breaking miracle stuff was to happen. Of course, the Chinese virus is to blame. Even Modi would confirm this.

Whether the virus will create problems or not is yet to be seen. 2022 was when all the tenders would have borne fruit, now it's 2023 or even 2024. One can expect if the govt is ready to begin tenders for multiple high value projects in mid-2019, then it would have taken 3 years for contract. So a mid-2020 start date would give us 2023, and mid-2021 would give us 2024. Overall, the expectation is to sign a lot of contracts within Modi's current term.

But doubling of the budget is a different story and has nothing to do with the 2022 date.

Growth in tax revenue is more important for the defence budget than GDP.
