People's Liberation Army Air Force : News & Discussions

Scary indeed if you don't have F-35 or F-22 in your air force. Even a flight of SH with a Growler in their flight would have no issue taking it out.
We have Rafale to take on J-20 and J-16. Rafale with Meteor and MICA-IR is a great leveller. As @Picdelamirand-oil said in the other thread, with ACT Rafale's frontal RCS is just -37dBsm, that's literally VLO. So even though we won't be able to dominate PLAAF, we can hold fort. We need more Rafales and hopefully Su-60MKI in future to keep PLAAF in check.

It drops down by -10dBsm with external weapons though. So Rafale in the current configuration is not competitive with the F-22 and J-20. Gotta wait for F5 and drones.

China’s H-20 Stealth Bomber Threatens ‘Easy Penetration’ Of Himalayan Border; How Can IAF Respond?

J-20 stealth fighter jet can easily reach supercruise, PLA confirms
The Chinese military has confirmed that its J-20 stealth fighter jet can easily reach supercruise, which experts said on Monday can bring significant tactical advantages and reflect the power of China's domestically developed engines.

The J-20, a "Cross-Straits Lethality" weapon, is characterized by a high stealth capability that allows it to effortlessly penetrate a hostile air defense system, a high mobility that allows it to easily reach supercruise, and a high situational awareness that allows it to quickly identify targets and perform precision strikes, the PLA Eastern Theater Command said in a social media post on Sunday evening.

The J-20 is a sharp sword in the sky; a vanguard that leads to victory, and a go-to option in breaking down hostile defenses, the PLA Eastern Theater Command said.

In a countermeasure against Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te's separatist inaugural speech made on May 20, the PLA Eastern Theater Command conducted the Joint Sword-2024A exercises surrounding the island from Thursday to Friday, and that was when it released a set of posters themed "Cross-Straits Lethality," depicting some of its weaponry aimed at "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces, including the J-20.

Among the PLA Eastern Theater Command's descriptions of the J-20, observers highlighted the phrase "easily reaches supercruise."

Zhang Xuefeng, a Chinese military expert, told the Global Times that the J-20 can perform supercruise and has subsonic super maneuverability thanks to its unique aerodynamic design of a lifting body with strakes and canards, plus domestically developed engines.

Supercruise means that an aircraft can reach supersonic flight for an extended period without using an afterburner, another military expert who requested anonymity told the Global Times on Monday, noting that this brings important advantages in combat, including reaching advantageous combat positions faster and giving the enemy little time to react.

Being able to perform supercruise easily indicates that China's domestically developed engines are powerful, and the J-20s equipped with them now have even stronger combat capabilities, analysts said.

The J-20's conversion to use domestically developed engines was revealed at the China Airshow 2021 in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province. Earlier J-20s were reportedly equipped with Russia-made engines that analysts said did not support supercruise.

China's J-20 stealth fighter jet receiving upgrades; next generation coming soon: test pilot
An ace test pilot of China's J-20 stealth fighter jet recently revealed that the J-20 is receiving constant upgrades, and a next generation warplane is expected to make its debut soon.

"The J-20 is constantly improving, keeping pace with the times, and continuously perfecting its mission system to achieve its expected combat objectives," said Li Gang, the test pilot in the J-20's maiden flight, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Wednesday.

Since the J-20's first test flight in 2011, China's aviation technologies have developed at an astonishing speed, far surpassing that of other countries, Fu Qianshao, Chinese military aviation expert, told the Global Times on Thursday.

The latest technologies have been applied to the J-20, including aerodynamic design changes and new engines, as well as the avionics, radar systems, software and materials, Fu said.

With these upgrades, the J-20 is now the world leader by far in advanced fighter jets, Fu said, noting that the US' F-22 has not received any major upgrades since its development, and its technologies are becoming obsolete.

But China will not sit on the J-20, with countries like the US having already started developing sixth-generation fighter jets, observers said.

"As the technology of our country's aviation industry continues to develop, the next generation will definitely come out soon," CCTV quoted Li, the J-20 test pilot, as saying.

China trailed behind the US at the start of the J-20's development, but now for the next generation fighter jet, China has either caught up with the US or is leading the world, Fu said.

The new warplane will likely also be built with an open architecture that allows fast development, fast production and fast upgrades like the J-20, analysts said.

No additional information has been given for China's next-generation fighter jet. Observers noted that some global trends include the integration of artificial intelligence, loyal wingman drones, more advanced engines that lead to faster speeds, stronger situational awareness, higher stealth capability, as well as the assumption of the role of a C4ISR (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) node.

Seems that J-20 can do limited supercruise(~Mach 1.3) even with current WS-10C engines. Of course with the introduction of WS-15 by the end of this decade, its supercruise performance shall further improve/increase.

Our Rafales are currently in Alaska, US; participating in Red Flag. I just hope US allows a full-on BVR simulation with either F-35 or F-22(even both). That will tell IAF how potent our Rafales are against VLO fighters. If they perform even decent against American VLO fighters then J-20 is toast as its stealth isn't as good as US VLO jets.

Fingers crossed.....
You're going up against F-35 aggressors which are limited as in only radar and irst. The radar will also be limited since the point of them is to act like enemy VLO fighters.

If our Rafales perform even decent against them, then J-20 is going to be a toast. Time will tell.....
