How metro rail networks are spreading across India
IndianMetroSystemsChartJan2017.png

New Delhi: The metro rail network in the country is increasing with the mass rapid transit system emerging as one of the best solutions for urban transportation. Even as eight metro rail networks covering a length of 370 km are operational in the country, over two dozen more projects are lined up.

Out of the two dozen projects, around 15 are lined up with the urban development ministry. The cities that have lined up their plans include Pune, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Vijayawada, Kozhikode, Indore, Bhopal, Patna, Guwahati, Kanpur and Varanasi.

A senior urban ministry official, on the condition of anonymity, said, “Success of Delhi-NCR metro brought enthusiasm in the state governments and they want to replicate the same in the cities with population of over 1 million. We are getting a lot of proposals and many of the state governments are also looking at public-private partnership (PPP) since urban transportation is a state subject.” He added that Central assistance is given only to projects which are feasible.

In the last three years, from 2014-2017, the urban development ministry sanctioned Rs30,653.78 crore, out of which only Rs12,345.33 crore was released to various metro rail companies in the country. Similarly, in the current fiscal year, the ministry allocated around Rs17,960 crore for metro rail companies and till the first quarter ending June only Rs4,650 crore was spent. The figures are for Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Delhi-NCR region.

However, officials from states like Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, which are yet to get approval for the first metro projects in their states, said that there has been a huge delay from the Centre for their projects. Some of these states are ready for the PPP route too.

A senior Punjab government official, who didn’t want to be identified, said, “We have submitted two metro proposals for Amritsar and Ludhiana, both high-density areas where such a mass rapid transit system would be a success. However, none of them has been approved. We will see for some more time and are also open to PPP route for development of metro system.”

Metro rail projects are capital intensive and are generally undertaken through financial support of both the central and state governments in the form of equity and grants. The remaining funds are raised through multilateral agencies like Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and European Investment Bank (EIB).

The urban development ministry official said, “States should learn to be open to use their own resources and reduce dependence on centre. In the recent months we have simplified provisions for state public sector undertakings to directly tap bilateral agencies for resources for infra development in their states.” He added that the new fund-raising route will allow for direct borrowing from official development assistance partners in countries like Japan, the US and Germany.

Interestingly, PPP for metro projects has been limited to five in India. Out of these five, one project (Mumbai Metro Phase 2) was terminated before it started, while another (Delhi Airport Line) was terminated after becoming operational. Currently, there are three operational PPP-based metro projects (one in Mumbai, and two in Gurugram) while one project is under implementation (Hyderabad Metro).

Shubham Jain, vice-president and sector head for corporate ratings agency ICRA, said, “The PPP participation in metro rail projects has been limited thus far, to encourage PPP would require adequate risk allocation in the concession agreements, availability of low cost debt funding, and the presence of a robust dispute resolution mechanism.”

ICRA in its report has estimated that in the next five years, metro rail projects worth Rs2 trillion are likely to come up for bidding.

City to get Metro-local hybrid for Mumbai-Navi Mumbai route

Mumbai: In a good news for the Mumbaikars, very soon rail commuters can enjoy the Metro experience on the commute between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai — air-conditioned coaches, automated doors, and high speeds. As a cost-saving measure, the authorities have now decided to use Metro-style rakes on the two lines planned between the sister cities — the CSMT- Panvel fast line elevated corridor and the Mumbai airport- Navi Mumbai airport corridor.

This move to integrate corridors is the first time that the authorities have planned a complete integration of the railways and Metro; in theory, rakes running on the CSMT- Panvel line will also be able to run on connecting Metro lines, reported Mid-Day. For this exercise to implement, the new lines will be laid with standard gauge, instead of broad gauge. This is the first Indian Railways route in the country to have standard gauge. All Metro trains use this kind of gauge for their service.

The CSMT- Panvel elevated corridor was brought out from the wilderness after new Railway Minister Piyush Goyal began discussions on it last week. A senior official said that a feasibility study regarding the operation was conducted in 2012 on broad gauge operations.

This study was conducted afresh with plenty of factors to consider and also taking into account the change in gauge and the integration of the railways and Metro. This line will have 11 stations, almost all of them serving as major interchange points with other modes of transit.

The alignment of the CSMT- Panvel fast line will start at the east of platform 18 at CSMT, and will run along the existing Harbour line. Between CSMT and Mankhurd, the line will be elevated, while it will run at grade between Mankhurd and Vashi. After Vashi, the line will be elevated again till Belapur, at which point it will run at ground level. The existing harbour line will be shifted from platform one and two to a new two- deck station. The CSMT- Panvel line will also connect to the Airport Metro between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to shorten the journey and will save time.
The new two lines will intersect at Nerul, just before the under- construction Nerul- Uran line railway bridge across Palm Beach Road. This project will be handled by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation ( MRVC). This line was proposed by the Maharashtra government to connect Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport ( CSIA) to the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport.

As of now it will begin at Andheri East and will run underground, parallel to the existing Metro 1 line. Further on, this two- track corridor with eight- car trains will run elevated and at grade along the Ghatkopar- Mankhurd route, before connecting to the airport in Panvel. This ambitious and much needed project will be handled by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Delhi Metro set to add 120 km in 2018, will become world’s 4th largest network
Starting March 2018, many new lines of the Delhi Metro network will begin operating. With the completion of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's Phase III expansion, the Indian capital's metro rail system would become the fourth largest in the world with over 350 km of corridors. Its current network spans 231 km following the recent opening of the Botanical Garden-Kalkaji Mandir section of the Magenta Line.
Delhi Metro expands its footprint

Anuj Dayal, executive director (corporate communications), DMRC, said Delhi Metro has 173 operational stations at the moment, making it the ninth largest metro system in the world. "After the completion of Phase III, we shall have a network of over 375 km, including the Noida-Greater Noida corridor and would be the largest after Shanghai, Beijing and London," Dayal said. The Noida-Greater Noida corridor would be a part of the Delhi Metro network with an interchange at the upcoming Noida Sector 52 station. Though constructed by DMRC, this corridor would be operated by the Noida Metro Rail Corporation.

Master.jpg

It is expected that the next Delhi Metro corridor to be opened will be the Kalkaji Mandir-Janakpuri West corridor of the Magenta Line, the first section of which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25. The corridor has already brought Noida closer to south Delhi, but when the line is extended to Janakpuri West, the distance between Noida and Gurgaon would also shrink with the availability of interchange at Hauz Khas station with the Yellow Line (HUDA City Centre-Samaypur Badli). DMRC promises to complete the section by March 2018, though its opening for commercial operations would depend on the safety go-ahead from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety.

The Kalkaji Mandir-Janakpuri West corridor would also bring the domestic Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport on the metro map. At present, IGIA is connected with the city centre through the high-speed Airport Express Line, but the corridor doesn't have direct connectivity with Terminal 1 handling domestic flights.

March 2018 will also see the completion of the massive Pink Line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar) with a length of 58.59 km. The Pink Line will act as a 'Ring Corridor' connecting most parts of Delhi. A small stretch of the corridor, between Mayur Vihar Pocket 1 and Trilokpuri, however, will not be a part of the line due to land-related issues and will, therefore, remain a missing link. The Pink Line will turn the Delhi Metro network into an intricate web by bringing the existing corridors at 10 different interchange points, including with the Airport Express Line at Dhaula Kuan station.

In 2018, DMRC will also make its third foray into Haryana after Gurgaon and Faridabad by extending the Green Line to Bahadurgarh. DMRC will also extend the Violet Line from Escorts Mujesar in Faridabad to Ballabhgarh next year. The extension of Blue Line from Noida City Centre to Noida Electronic City will not only bring Delhi Metro closer to many sectors of Noida, but also to areas in Ghaziabad such as Indirapuram.

Tata Projects wins Mumbai Metro orders worth Rs 1,048 cr
Tata Projects today said its joint venture (JV) has won orders worth Rs 1,048 crore for Mumbai Metro's elevated line.
"The JV of Tata Projects Limited China Harbour Engineering Company (TPL-CHEC) today received the LoA (Letter of Award) for the constructing of two packages of the Mumbai Metro Elevated Line 4," the company said in a statement.
The packages lie on the line extending between Wadala and Kasaradavali.
"The combined value of both packages is Rs 1,048 crores and requires the contractor to design and construct 14 elevated stations with a viaduct of 12.5 kms. This project will improve connectivity with Thane," the statement said.
It said the project is challenging as it involves construction in highly congested locations as well as management of logistics for transportation and erection of heavy girders.
It said Tata Projects has successfully completed a similar job in the National Capital Region with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
Vivek Singhal COO Urban Infrastructure, Tata Projects Limited said, "The company has been awarded 2 important Mumbai Metro packages. We are happy to contribute to Mumbai's transformation by building both underground and over ground stretches of Mumbai Metro".
The company is now executing 6 metro packages across the country.

Fully operational Magenta Line pushes metro ridership by 2 lakh
Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line is a hit with commuters and the figures prove that. On Tuesday, when the Janakpuri West to Kalkaji Mandir section of the corridor opened for public, its ridership went up by 2 lakh. The first 12.6 km-long section of Magenta Line between Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir was opened in December last year. On Monday, the Magenta Line saw a footfall of 81,800 passengers but on Tuesday, when the remaining section was opened, its ridership zoomed to 2,87,413.

The stretch, meanwhile, faced its first snag on Wednesday that resulted in delayed train services in the evening. “The trains going towards Botanical Garden were moving very slowly and it took 30 minutes to reach Kalkaji Mandir from Hauz Khas,” said Anup Sharma, a commuter.

According to projections made in the detailed project report of the corridor, DMRC expects 3.9 lakh passengers to use the corridor. Even though the Magenta Line has interchange stations at Botanical Garden (with Blue Line) and Kalkaji Mandir (Violet Line), it is the interchange facility at Hauz Khas which has proven to be the game changer. Thanks to the interchange facility available with Yellow Line at Hauz Khas, passengers can now reach Noida from Gurgaon much easily and in less time. The opening of the entire Magenta Line also means that Metro’s overall daily ridership, which had witnessed a massive dip following two successive fare hikes last year, would go up. DMRC, however, didn’t reveal the total ridership witnessed in Delhi Metro network on Tuesday.

“Overall line utilisation of the metro system on May 29 was 45,35,932 passengers. Line utilisation indicates how many passengers travelled on the line or a portion of that line during their overall journey on Metro system,” a DMRC spokesperson said. Simply put, if a passenger interchanges twice and uses three different lines to commute between two locations, DMRC’s system would show three lines having been utilised instead of counting the footfall of one person.

Delhi Metro To Use Solar Power From Madhya Pradesh For 90% Of Electricity Requirement
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Sunday had signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Ltd (RUMSL) based in Madhya Pradesh to get the solar power for two months to run the metro in the national capital.

Madhya Pradesh Renewable Energy Principal Secretary Manu Srivastava said, “DMRC will get around 25 percent of the total power generated by the plant to meet the requirement of about 90 percent of the total electricity required by the DMRC.”

“The DMRC will start getting the power from RUMSL within next two months,” he said.

The DMRC will pay around Rs 3.67 per unit of solar power along with the transmission charges. This would help the DMRC to save around Rs 1,400 crores of Delhi Metro in the next 25 years.

As the deal is signed, MP Power Management Company Ltd will get 74 percent of the power produced from the Rewa solar power as 24 percent of the electricity will be required to benefit the DMRC. MP Power Management Company Ltd supplies power to electricity distribution companies in India.

It is the first project in the country to supply power to an inter-state open access customer. The Rewa solar power plant spread across 1,590 acres is among the largest solar plants in the world.

Currently, the Delhi Metro is purchasing electricity at Rs 7 per unit for about 288 km of Delhi metro network spread with 208 stations across boundaries of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad.

First trial run of Ahmedabad metro train to begin in January 2019
The first trial run of the much-awaited Ahmedabad metro train would be conducted in January next year, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said here today.

During the trial, the train will ply between Vastral village and Apparel Park on a 6.5-km stretch, called as "priority reach", in east Ahmedabad.

The above stretch is the part of the 20.73-km-long East-West Corridor of the ambitious Metro Rail Project that proposes to connect Vastral area in east Ahmedabad with the western suburb of Thaltej.

"The trial run (of the Metro train) on the 'priority reach' between Vastral village and Apparel park would begin in January 2019. The work is going on in full swing. I have instructed the officials to make sure that the ongoing works do not cause any trouble to the people," Rupani told reporters.

The chief minister today visited the underground section of the Metro Rail near the main Kalupur railway station.

He inspected the proposed integration of the Bullet Train, Metro and Kalupur railway station, stated an official release.

The Bullet Train project envisages launching of the country's first high-speed train connecting Mumbai in Maharashtra with Ahmedabad.

The CM was told that a "mock-up" model of the Metro coach will arrive in Ahmedabad by the end of the next month and it will be displayed at a suitable location for public viewing, it stated.

In manufacturing and design parlance, a mock-up model is a scale or full-size model of a design or device.

The Metro Rail project is being implemented by the Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA), a wholly-owned company of the Gujarat government.

During the first phase (Rs 10,773 crore) of the project, the metro train would connect eastern-western and northern-southern suburbs in Ahmedabad.

The train will be extended to Gandhinagar in the second phase.

While the East-West corridor is around 20.73-km long, the North-South corridor, connecting Motera with APMC Market, is 18.52-km long.

Mumbai metro corridor: BEML bags Rs 3,015-crore contract
State-owned BEML has bagged a contract worth Rs 3,015 crore for the Mumbai Metro corridor. The public sector company was the lowest among seven bidders and will manufacture 378 metro cars for the Mumbai Metro Corridors 2A, 2B and 7. Other bidders were Alstom, Bombardier, CAF, CRRC, Titagarh, Hyundai Rotem.

“The state-of-art, driver-less trains shall be manufactured indigenously by BEML. Supply of trains will begin from October 2020 and be completed by December 2022,” a government statement said.
BEML earlier supplied metro coaches in smaller numbers, but along with an international player as a JV partner. It has now sub-contracted Hitachi only for some designs. Coaches will be manufactured at the BEML factory in Bengaluru.

The project is being assisted by the Asian Development Bank and the procurement has been done following its guidelines and concurrence.

Metro line 2A will connect Dahisar to DN Nagar. Metro line 2B will run further from DN Nagar to Mankhurd via Bandra, and Metro line 7 from Dahisar to Andheri (East).
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has standardised specifications for metro rolling stock, signalling, telecom, electrical and civil components. The government has stipulated that a minimum of 75% of coaches procured against any tender have to be manufactured in India.

“As a result of the Make in India initiatives, the last two big procurement orders for rolling stock in India, floated on the international competitive bidding model, have gone to Indian companies. This has also resulted in substantial reduction in cost,” the release said.

Currently, about 536 km of metro lines are operational in 10 different cities namely – Delhi-NCR (317 km),
Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow, Mumbai and Gurugram.
In addition, more than 650 km of metro rail projects are under construction in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Pune, Bhopal and Indore.

We are very far behind China in infrastructure. Beijing or Shanghai alone have more metro system than entire Indian metro system

china is suffering from over infrastructure......means not able to get the cost at expected rate.

As long as their economy grows over infrastructure is not going to be problematic. But we need infrastructure to grow which we lack for now
