PLAAF's non stealth planes will also get upgrades in systems.

Tejas mk1a has similar payload &range as f16.
Despite being lot smaller and lot lighter, due to its large delta wing.
F16 also uses a more powerful engine than Tejas.

PLAAF upgrades to non stealth will not make them have a significant egde as it will basically be GaN radar instead of GaAs as well as more capable EW suites. Which we can roughly match on Mk2 and Su 30MLU. Problem is Chinese killchain assisted by AWACS, they have more AWACS of better capability as well as superior ISR in space anc via unmanned systems.

What good usefulness is Tejas 1a
When short legged and can't really carry long range heavy Bvrs and stand weapons for ground strikes and has limited load out

Despite its small size, the Mk1A has a range and payload comparable to the Jaguars. Mk2 will be a step-up.
