Armenia and Azerbaijan were fighting over this area a hundred years ago, the Soviet Union invaded and annexed both. In a bid to try to get Turkey on his side, Stalin gave two Armenian regions to the Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan. This didn't work and Turkey eventually joined NATO. Armenians kept trying to get back this region (they were entirely ethnically cleansed from the other), including by resuming war when the USSR crumbled.Seems to me that the Republic of Artsakh is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan and that's what they took back in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War. This was necessary to avoid their country being split in two and cut-off from each other. Nothing was taken back that was not taken in First Nagorno-Karabakh War.
