India - United States Relations

US trade negotiators have informed their Indian counterparts that a reduction in Russian oil imports is key to lowering tariffs on Indian goods and finalising a trade deal, according to a Reuters report, citing two sources familiar with the discussions.

Although talks are progressing positively, a US official said India must do more to address American concerns regarding market access, the trade imbalance, and continued purchases of Russian crude.

It remains pretty much the same set of demands as far as I can tell.

More likely... US has surrendered to China and is focusing on India...

I say it's time for India to shed it's moral chains. Do some nuclear weapon sharing with Iran.

Show USA that it ismt the only nation which can do realpolitik.
Leverage Iran influence over muslims to counter Saudi influence

If modi gives in on the Russian oil purchases he will send indian foreign policy and standing atleast a decade behind. Already the foreign SM is reporting india is reducing oil purchases. With trump teaming up with pakistan and blackmailing india optics are already very very bad.

Tbh if you look at the data around this time of the year we always tends to have a decrease in our oil imports. Heck we had 12 month all time low oil imports in 2023 around September-October. Even in 2024 it fell by some 6-7% around this time. Western media is just twisting the data to set their own narrative around it.

We wish to buy oil from the open market. If the deal is worth making, do it. However, if the cons outweigh the pros, why should GoI stick its head out and tell others to have at it. Russian oil was cheaper and was able to help stabilise the energy demand for our domestic market. It was working in our favour and was good till it lasted. If after Sindoor, people are believing news quoting 'sources' and 'insiders', they can continue to do so. Iran/Saudi/any other African source works just as well for us. There is no need to be unreasonable and stick to Russian crude if it does not bring benefits. Everyone is out for themselves right now and there exists little reason to catch heat for a cause that's not our own.

I agree. We continue sourcing Russian oil because abandoning it would narrow our choices and hand excessive leverage to traditional suppliers, allowing them to dictate prices. That’s the real reason we haven’t walked away. Iranian crude remains out of reach due to sanctions, Saudi supplies would put us in direct competition with Europe and push up costs, and U.S. oil presents logistical and pricing challenges of its own. Maintaining Russian flows helps us keep the market balanced and prevents overdependence on any single source. I think we will eventually reduce our crude imports from Russia naturally once we have alternatives at place.

I don't think we have reduced purchase of Russian oil. There are monthly fluctuations, but the trend is stable:

Even Nayara (the refiner sanctioned by EU) is still buying copious amounts of Ural crude:

New ships & banking/payment channels are being arranged to get around EU sanctions on Nayara:

India clears four ships for EU-sanctioned Nayara’s domestic fuel supply; dollar trade restrictions persist

New customers are also being found so that the sanctioned refiner can continue exporting:

Against US' demands of cutting off Russian oil Delhi has issued demands of her own:

India asks US to allow Iran oil in order to curb Russia trade

Much like buying Russian oil compromises US foreign policy goals, buying Iranian or Venezuelan oil will also have the same effect.

China seems to want to exploit the tension in India-US relation:

In any case I don't think Russian oil will ever go back to being a tiny, irrelevant share of India's oil basket. We may offer a temporary slowdown in crude oil purchases as a face-saving measure to the US. But the oil trade with Russia is here to stay, with or without US tariffs, with or without a trade deal with US.

Russia offers something that no other major oil exporter offers, trade in local currencies instead of USD/EUR. As long as that remains, New Delhi has very good reasons to not rock the boat with Russia. Of course, there will be problems of trade balance with Russia in the short to medium term. These are minor issues as long as there are weapons, financial & industrial trade links.

Look, I am seeing foreign media reporting India is reducing oil purchase from Russia since 2 months and each month we see Indian imports more than last year.

We are in this position bcos we ended up agreeing to sanctions on Iran & venezuela all under pressure of US to serve US interests. Whom we trade and what we trade should be free to decided by us. US says a ton of things about china but they still trade with them, its their interests that matter.

For all the threats & sanctions that US imposes they will trade with us only if it benefits them , its not that they will take a loss or doing charity. We need to move on and trade where it benefits us.

America want us to help them by lowering grocery prices & also import their agriculture produce. A tough equation to solve, if agriculture harvest is good shouldnt grocery prices go down ?

Let's wait and watch if unconstructive opportunist will cry when India will do exactly that ☝️for Gaza without going pakistani way of selling self respect and sovereignty , while pakistan faces backlash from jihadis due to hate for jews.

Edit: An apt opinion piece

Time to get all our Gujju and Marwari talent to work on it..
To be honest, that’s not a wise move at all in long term. When Trump eventually gets booted out of his throne, everyone who tied themselves to his questionable ventures will find themselves in serious legal and reputational trouble. History shows that once a leader with a cult-like following loses power, the scrutiny on their allies and business partners multiplies. That’s exactly why no respectable country or major institution is putting money into Trump’s shady crypto schemes. The only outlier is Pakistan, which has a track record of backing dubious, high-risk ventures due to its own weak regulatory framework and lack of global credibility. Their reputation is already in the gutter, they can just switch their Dady if the next guy doesn't like them. So they can be part of such ponzi schemes.

Perhaps our policy makers also think that associating ourselves with Trump’s crypto circus now is like boarding a sinking ship, you may enjoy a brief ride, but the crash is inevitable. And the consequences of that crash is incomprehensible. So they are playing safe.

Although we can try to lobby him in the more traditional American way. Which we are already trying to do by investing in companies and lobby firm associated with Trump. Those are much more safer than directly getting involved in shady ventures like Trump backed crypto.

India's diesel exports to Europe probably surged to record in September, sources say

SINGAPORE, Oct 2 (Reuters)-
India's diesel exports to Europe probably hit an all-time high in September, data from shiptrackers and trade sources showed on Thursday, as traders cashed in on robust profits in the west during a refinery maintenance season.
September volumes from Asia's key swing supplier bound for Europe were at 1.3 million to 1.4 million metric tons (9.7 million to 10.4 million barrels), data from LSEG, Kpler and two trade sources showed.

Shiptracking data showed India's exports to Europe reached these levels for the first time since such figures began to be recorded in 2017.

Volumes have hit an all-time high as stronger diesel east-price spreads push sellers to pivot their cargoes West to cash in on margins amid a heavy refinery maintenance West.

India's refiners, which source about a third of their crude from Russia, are boosting runs and redirecting surplus products abroad, with gasoline and diesel shipments hitting multi-year highs.

Total diesel exports for September were also at five-year highs of nearly 3 million tons, Kpler shiptracking data showed.

EAST-WEST SPREAD WIDENS

The diesel east-west spreads averaged $45 per metric ton in September, up from less than $30 in August, LSEG pricing data showed, spurring traders to move the product to Europe.

European prices strengthened as refinery maintenance has reduced diesel supply there, traders said.

In Europe, crude processing capacity of some 550,000 barrels per day to 600,000 bpd is expected to be offline in October, two of the sources said, up from around 400,000 bpd in September.

Shipping costs have also fallen by about $10 per ton, data from two shipbrokers showed.

The cost to ship 90,000 tons of refined fuel on the India-Europe route fell to $3.25 million to $3.5 million in the second half of September from $4 million to $4.2 million in the period from the end of August to early September, the data showed.

The rise in India's shipments to Europe has tightened supply in Asia, pushing up 10-ppm sulphur gasoil cash premiums to nearly $1.50 a barrel, the highest in two months.

However, Vortexa's head of APAC analysis, Ivan Mathews, said he forecasts India's transport fuel exports to fall month on month in October due to higher domestic demand during the Diwali festive season.

Ultimately, this expected decline in exports could be limited as product cracks are higher than the same period last year, which could "incentivise export-oriented refiners in India to run harder on the margin" and encourage some export sales, he added.

Looking ahead, traders remained cautious on diesel volumes on the India-Europe trade route, given a lack of details about how the European Union's 18th sanction package banning refined products derived from Russian oil will affect India's fuel exports.

Volumes can easily be swapped out for Middle East-origin barrels, which are readily available, two of the trade sources said.
