Punjab: Woman held for sharing classified information with Pak ISI; two Army personnel booked

Ferozepur, Oct 11 (PTI) Punjab Police's Counter Intelligence wing has arrested a woman for allegedly transmitting classified information about military installations to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), while two Army personnel have been booked for their alleged role in the espionage operation, police said on Sunday.
Suspect Gurnoor Sidhu, a resident of Faridkot, was arrested near an under-construction bridge on the Hussainiwala border road. She is currently being interrogated, police said.

Police said they received information on Thursday that the accused were allegedly conspiring to share classified information about military zones and cantonments with Pakistan agencies.

The two Army personnel, who were deployed along the India-China border, allegedly collected sensitive information, while Sidhu facilitated its transmission through mobile phones, tablets and internet, police said in a statement.

A case has been registered against the three accused at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) police station in Fazilka under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act.

Security agencies are also investigating whether sensitive information relating to the Faridkot military cantonment was transmitted to Pakistan.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of the alleged espionage network and the role of those involved. PTI COR CHS ARB

New Delhi: Al-Umar Mujahideen, founded in December 1989 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, has become largely defunct over the years. Its founder, Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, also known as Mushtaq Latram, is currently based in Pakistan. Although there is no known recent operational activity by the group, Indian agencies are keeping a close watch on Al-Umar Mujahideen in view of recent developments and reports of attempts to revive its presence in the Valley.

An Intelligence Bureau official said that the Umar Mujahideen is currently being tapped by the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) to recommence operations in Jammu and Kashmir.Pakistan has been seeking to revive militant operations in Jammu and Kashmir, but prefers a homegrown outfit to remain at the forefront of such activities.“The Hizbul Mujahideen, which would have been the obvious choice for such an operation, is currently not ready for the job. Moreover, almost all its operatives are working alongside the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pakistan,” the official said.

To oversee operations in J&K, the ISI had created the Kashmir Study Group. All decisions relating to Jammu and Kashmir are based on the recommendations made by this group. Headed by two officials, who are in the ranks of a Brigadier and a Colonel in the Pakistan Army, the group studies the Valley closely and then makes suggestions to the ISI. Plan Trips“The studies include the local problems that the people face and how to exploit them. It also makes recommendations to the ISI on how to use the various terror groups in Jammu and Kashmir,” the official said. An official said that the reason why the Indian agencies are keeping a close watch on the Umar Mujahideen is because of recent recommendations that have been made by the Kashmir Study Group. It has told the ISI to merge the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Umar Mujahideen for the sake of operations in Jammu and Kashmir.“The plan is to have the Jaish and Lashkar hold the Umar Mujahideen for some time and then let it operate individually in the Valley,” the official said.

Al-Umar Mujahideen was formed after it broke away from the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). The reason for the breakup was that Umar Mujahideen chose a path that would pursue an Islamist-pro-Pakistan agenda explicitly, while the JKLF wanted to fight for an independent secular Kashmir. The Kashmir Study group suggested that Umar Mujahideen be handled initially so that it can rebuild its base in Jammu and Kashmir. Moreover, this terror group will be looked at as a homegrown outfit considering its roots in Jammu and Kashmir.Another official said that the Kashmir Study group, while suggesting the merger, deliberately advised the ISI to leave the Hizbul Mujahideen out for now.Get Safety AlertsCurrently, the radar on the Hizbul Mujahideen is very high, and it was only in recent years that the Indian agencies had managed to shake up the entire ecosystem of the outfit. These incidents are fresh in the minds of the people and the agencies, and hence the scrutiny remains high.

Pakistan’s ISI hikes espionage budget against India to Rs 1,300 crore after Operation Sindoor

Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has reportedly increased its annual budget for espionage activities targeting India to Rs 1,300 crore following Operation Sindoor last year, according to intelligence officials. The funds are reportedly being used to build a Human Intelligence (HUMINT) network within the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force (IAF), with a focus on recruiting personnel who can share sensitive defence information.

According to the IANS report, an Intelligence Bureau official said the ISI’s budget for espionage against India was earlier estimated at Rs 800 crore to Rs 900 crore. However, the amount has reportedly increased to Rs 1,300 crore after Operation Sindoor.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) In the aftermath of the Indian agencies cracking down heavily on Indian influencers who were promoting pro-Pakistan content, fresh Intelligence reports suggest that the ISI is reaching out to foreign nationals for this purpose.

Post Operation Sindoor, the agencies busted several modules that were promoting pro-Pakistan content. They were lured with a fancy lifestyle and vacations, among other perks, to put forward Pakistan’s propaganda.

However, scores of such influencers were arrested, and this led to the busting of a major pro-Pakistan propaganda wing of the ISI within India.

An Intelligence Bureau official said that the ISI has directed its stooges to scout for international influencers to push anti-India propaganda. The Pakistan spy agency has handed out a script to such influencers, which focuses on putting out content that is harmful to the Indian state, the official said.

Some of the content that these influencers are expected to speak on is Jammu and Kashmir and the Khalistan movement, and also abuse Indians. The ISI has been scouting for persons in the UK, Canada, Australia, among other nations. In exchange, these influencers are handed large sums of cash and even taken on sponsored and lavish trips to Pakistan and other countries, the official said.

An official said that while the Jammu and Kashmir issue remains the major script, there has been an increase in pro-Khalistan content that is being put out by these international influencers. Content promoting the proscribed pro-Khalistan terror outfit, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), has only increased in the last couple of months.

These influencers have been putting out detailed content about how Punjab should be separated from India and a Khalistan nation should be formed, the official said.

Another official said that the strategy is very clear. If an international audience is putting out such content, it tends to get noticed more. It also appears that the issues that the ISI has been pushing have been internationalised. This automatically makes the issue look very large, and people tend to take notice, the official noted.

The impact of similar content being put out by an Indian or a Pakistani is far lesser when compared to the ones by recruits from other foreign nations.

While the ISI always had its stooges across the globe, the push that is currently being made is much larger when compared to the earlier days. When a Pakistani puts out such content, it is easily dismissed as propaganda-driven or fake. An Indian putting out similar content is today easily debunked as compromised. This phenomenon is bigger, especially in the wake of the Indian agencies busting the major propaganda wing of the ISI using Indian influencers, officials say.

Further, tracking and bringing the international players to justice is much harder, as it would involve multiple exchanges by the agencies and several treaties would be at play.

When the scripts were initially handed out to these international stooges, there was an emphasis on driving a wedge within the Indian community by spreading hate and inciting communal tensions. However, the ISI has asked these influencers to back down on such scripts as the agenda becomes too obvious. Instead, issues in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab are being pushed with human rights angles. Titles, such as "India’s brutality in Punjab or Jammu and Kashmir", are being pushed heavily.

Such videos are heavily promoted by the Pakistan propaganda channels, and a large amount of money is spent to amplify such content so that it reaches a wider audience, officials say.

Another interesting aspect of this racket that the ISI is running is about how long the content remains on the internet. The videos are generated and soon posted.

However, after 15 days to one month, the ISI instructs these influencers to take down the content from social media. It is like a hit job that these elements are carrying out. By the time they have to take down the content, the damage is already done, and the narrative would have been set on social media.

This also helps in evasion, as the Indian agencies would find it harder to track the origin of such content, an official said.

I don't know how much one is aware, but TikTok is one whole machine with anti Hindu propaganda. And not just that, this platform is used to lure Hindu and Sikh women into marriage with Pakistani men.

Radical Muslim women befriend with Indian women on tiktok and they talk on live confrence and group talks. Then slowly a Pakistani male friend is introduced by the Pakistani women and then there is chemistry built to trap Hindu or sikh women emotionally.

There is a very dangerous game going on.
