Dedicated Freight Corridor Project : Indian Railways

DFCCIL creates world’s 1st electrified rail tunnel in less than a year
A tunnel-breaking ceremony was held on July 24 on completion of caving work for the one-kilometre long tunnel of Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) through Aravalli mountain range, near Sohna in Haryana. This will be the world’s first electrified rail tunnel fit to run double-stack containers. This work of tunnel has been completed in record less than a year time. Work started on this site last year. The last blasting of the tunnel which is situated on the Rewari-Dadri section was done on July 24.

While speaking to ANI, the Managing Director (Infrastructure) of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), Anurag Kumar Sachan said, “We began the work of this tunnel around one year back. Today, we have done last blast of this tunnel and the work is almost complete here.” “The entire section in the tunnel will be electrified due to which we have increased the height of the tunnel,” he added.

Geologically, the tunnel is safe and stable as it is caved through 2,500 to 500 million-year-old proterozoic rocks mainly quartzite, schists and slates of Alwar/Azabgarh groups of Delhi supergroup rocks which have a high bearing capacity.

Double stack containers and 25-ton axle load freight trains will run through this tunnel at a speed of 100 kmph. The tunnel connects Mewat and Gurugram district of Haryana and negotiates a steep gradient on the uphill and downhill slope of the Aravalli range. The D-shaped tunnel has a cross-sectional area of 150 square metres to accommodate double line with higher OHE (Over Head Equipment) to enable double-stack container movement on WDFC.

Cross-sectional area-wise, it is one of the biggest Railway tunnels in India. One end of the tunnel is near Rewari and is called Portal-1 or west portal while the other end of the tunnel at Dadri is designated as Portal-2 or east portal.

There are a total of six tunnels in both the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors. In WDFC, there are the one-kilometre long Sohna Tunnel, the 320 metres long Vasai Detour North Tunnel and the 430 metres long Vasai Detour South Tunnel. Likewise, the EDFC also has three tunnels measuring 150 metres, 475 metres and 300 metres respectively, in the Sonnagar Gomoh section.

The DFCCIL has run more than 1,600 trains in the Bhadan-Khurja section of EDFC and the Madar-Rewari section of WDFC till date. Despite the coronavirus pandemic situation, work is progressing at a fast and resolute pace in DFCCIL. The Eastern (excluding the PPP section) and Western DFC is slated for completion in June 2022.
Mechanised Track Laying Speeds Up Dedicated Freight Corridor Project
Speeding up the track-laying work, 1.56 kilometre track was laid with the help of the new track construction (NTC) machine on the Khurja-Dadri section of the eastern dedicated freight corridor on Wednesday (29 July).

With the aim of completing the dedicated freight corridor project by 2021, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC) has done away with the manual way of track laying, and accordingly deployed seven such state-of-the-art machines in both the eastern and western corridors.

DFCCIL launches trial run on New Palanpur to Durai
Another milestone has been created in Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) as Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL) completed laying of track beyond Madar and upto New Palanpur station (352.7 Km) as freight trains on Rewari in Haryana to Madar in Rajasthan of the WDFC section has been running on trial basis regularly since December 2019.

First IR locomotive trial run in New Palanpur- Durai section of WDFC is being undertaken in two stretches --July 30, 2020, New Palanpur to Marwar (207.5 Km), July 31, 2020, New Marwar-Durai (135 Km).

This section falls in Rajasthan state (for approximately 67 Km in Ajmer district, 196 Km in Pali district and approximately 70 Km in Sirohi district) and Gujarat state (for approximately 19 km in Banas Kantha district).

The total cost of works in this section is approximately Rs 5980 crore, excluding land.

The opening of this stretch will benefit various industries in Ajmer, Beawar, Swaroopganj, Abroad areas of Rajasthan and Haryana. In addition to this, the container depot of CONCOR at Swaroopganj will also come on the DFC map and get an advantage in terms of faster throughput.

This section contains 98 number of major bridges (12 important bridges and 86 major bridges), 539 number of minor bridges, two rail fly over and one road under bridges. There are 12 newly built DFC stations in this section including 09 crossing stations (i.e. Saradhana, Haripur, Chandawal, Jawali, Birolia, Keshavganj, Swaroopganj, Sri Amirgarh and Palanpur ) and two junction stations (i.e. Bangurgram and Marwar).

DFCCIL will run freight train at the maximum speed of 100 km/per hour as against the current maximum speed of 75 kilometres per hour on Indian Railway tracks whereas the average speed of freight trains will also be increased from existing speed of 26 km/ph on Indian Railways lines to 70 km/ph on Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC).

Heavy Haul train operation with 32.5 Ton axle load has been envisaged for the First time in India (currently practised only in USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia, China, Russia South-Africa and Sweden-Norway).

Double line electric (2 X 25 KV) track will undertake higher haulage at higher speeds

Automated New Track Construction (NTC) machine with a record single-day track laying of more than three kilometres.

These DFCs are -- 1,115-km East Coast corridor from Kharagpur (West Bengal) to Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh); the East-West corridor which comprises 1,673 km connecting Bhusaval-Nagpur-Kharagpur-Dankuni (near Kolkata) route, and 195-km Rajkharswan-Kalipahari-Andal (West Bengal) route.

The third is the 975-km North South sub-corridor Vijayawada-Nagpur-Itarsi (Madhya Pradesh) route.

They changed the route again !

Disappointing pace. Should have started construction by now.

A total of 3 were rolled out by CLW. Haven't heard since then. A 2017 plan called for limited serial production of 8 nos of such 9000hp WAG9 locomotive for testing and trials.

Personal view : the first 3 used the same transmission system (only had the traction motors and Transformer upgraded) , maybe the components are under redesign.

PM inaugurates 351-km dedicated freight corridor in UP, hits out at previous govts

The 351 km Khurja – Bhaupur section in the Eastern DFC, Uttar Pradesh, is built at a cost of Rs 5,750 crores.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated on Tuesday the 351-km New Bhaupur-New Khurja section of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and Operation Control Centre (OCC) in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj via video conferencing.

Speaking at the inauguration, the PM also accused the previous governments of delaying the dedicated freight corridor project and ignoring modernisation of railways.

“Our past experiences tell us that the infrastructure projects related to the country’s development should be kept out of politics. The country’s infrastructure is not tied to any party’s ideology. It is not meant for five years, but a mission to benefit the people of the country.”

The prime minister further stressed that this project was the living example of the work culture of his government, as the freight project was given permission in 2006 but the then government lacked the “seriousness and urgency” with which it had to take it up with the states. However, he added, “till 2014, not a single km track of the project was laid and the funds sanctioned could not be spent properly. After 2014 ,it was restarted and officials asked to take it forward and by then the budget had gone up by 11 times”.

The 351 km Khurja – Bhaupur section in the Eastern DFC, Uttar Pradesh, is built at a cost of Rs 5,750 crores.

The new stations in this section are Bhaupur, Kanchausi, Achalda, Ekdil, Bhadan, Makhanpur, Tundla, Hathras, Daudkan & Khurja. Some of the important Industrial Areas that straddle this section are Aligarh, Khurja, Firozabad and Agra, railway ministry said.

“The Dedicated Freight Corridor shall reform the transportation sector and will create more capacity on trunk routes of Indian Railways as goods trains shall be able to ply freely on Dedicated Freight Corridor without any restrictions imposed by movement of passenger trains,” the ministry said on Tuesday.
