LCA Tejas Mk1 & Mk1A - News and discussions

I have some doubts about GHATAK achieving supercruise with the Kaveri engine. Other than that, the major change I see in the requirement is the emphasis on high manoeuvrability. Most of the other technologies could potentially be borrowed or adapted from the AMCA programme. For high manoeuvrability, we could consider 2D thrust vectoring or the requirement could be split into two variants, one with a canard and V-tail configuration optimized for manoeuvrability, and another tailless configuration optimized for surveillance and EW.

India should focus on getting Ghatak-Mk1 that files w/ 4.5G FA (su30 mki upg, lcas, etc.). Develop iteratively. IAF/MOD need to be realistic and want to build national capability step by step.

With the current asks, don't think it will fly anytime before mid 2040s best case...

They will drool over subsonic foren CCA imports.

Thanks, but are you sure this is for Ghatak? It seems for a heavier UCAV. Ghatak had only 1100 kg of payload according to recent news.
I hope its for a future heavier Ghatak, but expect the goalposts for the current Ghatak being shifted to this. No doubt future iterations should be scoped for this:

I remember the Brouhaha raised by the Media and Twitter Warriors when IAF chief said something like
" Maza Nahi Aa raha hai "to HAL chief during Aero India 2025

AND Soon we will have Aero India 2027 in February 2027

Hopefully IAF chief will meet them again BECAUSE
ACM A.P Singh retires in October 2027

Yes, but then you forget that LCA was conceived as a point defence interceptor to replace the MiG-21, to be stationed at the frontline airbases and use their shelters. That put a hard cap on just how big the LCA could be. Designing the LCA around something like the AL-31FP (or similarly sized powerplant) doesn't meet the stated design goal. The fact that the LCA has evolved into what it is today, is a classic case of requirements creep and point defence interception role being out of fashion. Plus, we're getting the bigger Tejas Mk2 which basically addresses all the shortcomings of Mk1/Mk1A (except RF stealth).
We always try to make minimum viable product because govt has very less risk appetite.

And also IAF is not very visionary, F-16 was extremely potent and darling aircraft of it's time, it flew atleast a decade earlier than the Tejas project initiation.

But instead IAF thought that Mig-21 type aircraft will still be useful in 2000s when the advance SAM development was in full swing.

And guess what ?? whole world is ruining behind variable cycle engine, and the primary factor is greater range but our AMCA has only 6.5k tonnes of fuel, even F/A-18 SH has slightly more than it.

5th gen, including J-35(extremely comparable) has over 8k tonnes of internal fuel.

J35 uses similar thrust engine(2*ws21 for initials and 2*ws19 for mass production) as AMCA, and chinw has J-20 and making even bigger J36 with huge range.

And here we are having 6.5k tonnes of fuel on AMCA and them talk about VCE for our 6th gen or even for AMCA engine(some use to dream that AMCA 120kn engine may be upgrade to VCE in future 😂)

To sustain the Q1 revenue growth, the state-owned aerospace and defence company is pinning its hopes on the delivery of its Tejas MK1A and HTT-40, an indigenously developed training aircraft. Tejas, which had suffered a crash at the Dubai air show in November, is undergoing testing for certain refinements, and the first delivery is now likely in the latter half of the fiscal.

Besides the technical issues, HAL also faced initial delays in engine delivery from GE Aerospace, but 15-20 are expected to be delivered in FY27. In FY26, it received six engines.

“HAL has already built more than 20 airframes for the LCA Tejas Mk1A, which can be quickly completed upon receiving the engines,” noted Nomura Global Markets Research, projecting deliveries of 6, 16 and 20 aircraft in FY27, FY28 and FY29. HAL's current annual production capacity is 24 units, and it plans to raise it to 30.

Among the major orders expected during FY27 are 140 advanced light helicopter and 40 Dornier aircraft.

To meet the timelines for various large ticket orders and expanding ROH facilities, HAL has outlined capital expenditure plan of Rs14,000 crore, to be spent over the next five years.

AMCA is very far ahead in the future , it will replace SU 30 in the future

Even IAF is not really sure about its stealth capabilities , therefore they are interested in FCAS or GCAP

The Most important project right now are MK 2 and of course MK 1A for the next 10 years

Any 4th gen won't stand a chance against a stealth aircraft.

There will be a massacre, chinease have far better and much more awacs, their avionics industry is far more mature and modern than whole europe combined(including Russia).

"Indians are always in hurry and never on time" fits perfectly to aeronautical industry and its funding.

We should have given CCS approval for Tejas Mk2 in 2010, AMCA in around 2015 and 6th gen NOW.
