GTRE Kaveri Engine

Recent updates by the author on twitter few days ago.

On collaboration with Brahmos Aerospace for the Afterburner
They are working with BrahMos Aerospace for AB. There are no new updates. .

On the flutter issue and engine weight
They have fixed the fluttering issue and are working on reducing the weight.

Whether we can make a 100KN engine like GE F414, if kaveri is fixed
Once we succeed with the Kaveri engine, we can easily evolve it to 100 kN, similar to the evolution of the F414EPE > F414 > F404 engines

The biggest Isothermal Press in world is 30,000 tonnes in China.
Depends on the requirements . Those 50,000 ton forging press also deals with hot parts as the process involved is forging.
They are looking to build a 50, 000 ton+ forge press. But that is still some time away. Indian industry has already set up 10-12, 000-ton forge presses. This 20, 000-ton forge press is a steppingstone towards that goal.

There may even be a 35-40, 000-ton forge press before we attempt to build a 50, 000+ ton unit.
Are we doing all this inhouse or are we getting external help as in from foreign sources ?

but normal forging press dont keep temperature same throughout the forging process,
by the time you complete forging metal changes its property and you end up with brittle weak turbine/compressor disks which is not allowed in jet engine...

That's the difference between normal forging & isothermal forging. In the former only the part is in a hot state which cools during the forging process whereas in the latter the whole set up including the die is in a hot state.

Furthering its collaboration with GTRE, PTC Industries also received a Purchase Order for Post-Cast Operations to manufacture Single Crystal ‘Ready-to-Fit’ Turbine Blades for the Kaveri Derivative Engine (KDE-2). This achievement marks an important step in India’s capability to produce single-crystal turbine blades - one of the most complex and high-value components in modern jet engines.

Has this been discussed anywhere? I don't remember seeing anything regarding "KDE-2"! This is different from the Godrej manufactured KDE. This KDE-2 is Kaveri 2.0?

No. It is inline for F404. F404-IN produces 50 KN dry thrust for 1076 KG. Our afterburner is what gives us trouble.
Ours is a bit less efficient because F404-IN includes a afterburner too.
You forget the weight of the after burner itself. It is no heavy, but it has a weight. You may easily add 50 to 100kg to the dry only Kaveri figure.

And to really compare 2 engines, you have also to compare the time between overhaul. You may have a light engine with only 100 hours TBO, and another heavier because made with more margins and more technical refinements of 500 hours TBO...

Thats what I meant when I said

Ours is without afterburner.
