Indian Hypersonic Propulsion Developments

\

It is meant to hit ships and other mobile targets on sea. This mean it will need constant updates during flight. not just during the part where its surfaces could get it really good steering but in case that steering is not enough the motor can correct the course. This is typical of a AShM missile with terminal guidance. Compare this with likes of DF-ZF which hits static targets.

Also, I have another thinking.... Perhaps because the range of this missile is not even IRBM, its terminal speed is not massive. Perhaps 2-2.5 Mach in its last moments. That makes sense because some KE will be lost doing skip glide manuvers. So to keep the terminal velocity indeed hypersonic it will be firing its motor to top up KE lost. The flip side is that it will less stealth compared to pure boost glide. I think Iran has similar missile design. Indian scientists are chosing kinematic performance over stealth. This will not be the first time. Brahmos is lso very visible but hard to target compare to say nirbhay missile.
Which missile are you talking about?
@marich01 is talking about dhvani hgv.

Comm across the midcourse and terminal phase are maintained in most missiles else the precision targeting can not be achieved. But this comm is not the only deciding factor like the missile systems the western countries use. There they are heavily relied on GPS data & location update even with INS use, terrain mapping etc. But we can not rely on this due to jamming/denial of service/bad signal etc based on past experience. Our missiles need to be self contained dead reckoning guidance system based that needs no help or signal from the outside to work. Right from the Sagarika days we used the strapdown INS later incurred in Brahmos too & now mems based imu is used. Very accurate to few meters level <5m.

In our case we use a self contained high precision INS that does the job. You need gps or other GNSS signalling in the initial stage to initiate the INS package. Once this is done the missile is very smart, it knows its entire course and exactly where to go. The steering via control actuation system those are also programmed & simulated prior. It can do automatic course correction based on dual redundant INS feedback. So more often than not i think it is fire & forget principle. You only track to identify whether it did everything you programmed it for. Any variation means certain part of the program variable did not work which is then changed in the coding of the autopilot.

In the terminal phase the OBC will handshake & handover the guidance to the seeker and a new guidance algo embedded with the seeker system will kick in to do the job. This is why all our systems are completely resistant to any sort of EW or jamming environment. Scalp etc might get jammed & miss the target (shot down or fall down elsewhere) but Brahmos will never.

Also, I have another thinking.... Perhaps because the range of this missile is not even IRBM, its terminal speed is not massive. Perhaps 2-2.5 Mach in its last moments. This particular one if you consider LRAShM it has a single booster motor for high kinetic impulse after short burnout. In case of Dhvani like system that has 2 different stages, one takes it to the desired altitude then another provide very high lateral acceleration. Without this way of flying you will not gain the minimum satisfactory kinetic impulse that fits the optimum performance based boundary condition of a glide flight path .

Due to high speed and lift generating surface it will gain enough aerodynamic lift to overcome any KE loss effect by exchanging high initial speed. That is why the speed drop from like 10km/sec at outside the atmospheric level to 4km/sec at lower altitude. This speed is significant for something flying along the earth curvature.

No need to worry about stealth. Stealth or non detectable flight is needed for a subsonic missile which needs to fly as low as possible to stay below the radar horizon. But the mission time is way more that if you calculate how much time will take to cover a certain distance. To cover 1500km of LRAShM range a subsonic article 1000km/hr will take 1.5 hour minimum, even way more due to cruise flight waypoint maneuvers. So it needs to be undetected for that amount of time and you can surprise the enemy once twice or few more times but not always.
LRAShM covers that distance within 12-15 mins possibly even less. So the use of sheer speed, maneuver & ability to catch enemy system reaction time will beat any subsonic level stealth mechanism.

LRASHM Remains hypersonic in terminal?
I heard its minimum speed being ~mach6
Very hard to say for now. Here I meant the composite first stage, 1400mm dia that is used for booster. Its job is to send it up quickly and still have enough lateral acceleration with flex nozzle use to help orient almost parallel to the earth surface. That is why it can glide and fly like a cruise missile across phases.

I was under the impression it descends/glide down after separation than stabilizes its altitude at 30-50km altitude before powered flight.

Without a very long glide phase it would not reach the target at 1500km away, irrespective of steady glide or skip glide trajectory. Glide phase is usually the longest. The whole missile won't cover much distance from liftoff to GV body separation after the booster burnout, but will be able to fly a long way after that. The landing phase where the motor will likely come into play is much small. You need some extra thrust assisting the different modes of operation.

India has the "mother of nuclear bombs": PM Modi on calling Pak's nuclear bluff

"Do whatever you want to do, we will retaliate"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said he did not fall prey to Pakistan's nuclear blackmail, because India has the "mother of nuclear bombs".

Addressing a campaign rally at Surendranagar in Gujarat, Modi was referring to the surgical strikes and air strikes conducted by the country's forces inside Pakistan in response to terrorist attacks in Uri and Pulwama.

"Earlier, terrorists from Pakistan would come here and go back after conducting an attack. Pakistan would threaten us, saying it has the nuclear bomb and will press the button (if India retaliated).

"We have nuclear of nuclear bombs (the mother of nuclear bombs). I decided to tell them, do whatever you want to do (but we will retaliate)," the prime minister said.

"In the past our people would weep, go around the world saying Pakistan did this, did that...It is now Pakistan's turn to weep.

"Didn't our jawans kill them by entering their houses? Shall we not kill them by entering their houses? Shall we not take revenge for our martyred soldiers?" he asked the large crowd which replied in the positive.

"Today is Mahavir Jayanti, the day to observe peace. But when shall we have peace? Will anyone listen to a weak man making an appeal for peace or to the warning of a strong man who can flex his muscles? Only the peace appeal of a strong man will be respected, not that of a weak person," Modi said.

He also alleged that the Congress spoke ill of the armed forces.

"You must have seen how the character of the Congress party has changed in this election. The way the Congress spreads lies, and questions the country's military, saying its seniors are street goons, the Air Force chief is a liar...If you say something like this, will it not make Pakistan happy?" he said.

In 2017, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit likened Army Chief General Bipin Rawat to a "goon on the street" over the latter's public remarks. He was forced to withdraw the remarks and apologise.

Modi also slammed the Congress for seeking proof of action against terrorists.

"When we conducted the surgical strike, Congress questioned us. When we conducted the air strike, it asked for proof. Do you (Congress) trust your own sons or Pakistan's rhetoric?" the prime minister said.

This seems more like political rhetoric, no? I doubt he would indicate any such things at a campaign rally. Maybe if he was attending a formal event at vigyan bhavan or some.

I thought Project Vishnu was a classified project personally overseen by PMO. And aren't LRAShM , dhavni also part of the project? So the funding is already there, no?

I am confused. Can you clarify the confusion please. Thanks

I heard scramjets start to suck when cruise speeds are required to go beyond mach 6-6.5

Any insight?

Glide vehicle projects are under ASL and usually part of strategic systems, not sure where PMO come into this. Only the nuke subs and its goodies maybe. LRAShM maybe classified as conventional but we will see.
Project Vishnu is related with the scramjet HCM, this is undertaken by DRDL. A regular conventional weapon program.
Now funding part, so far it is at TD level technology demonstration & readiness, very much like AMCA project. Once the enabling technologies are established only then project funding for actual hardware part will be approved. That is a full scale working prototype very much like an integrated missile system. Without the enabling technology ready you can not build the full scale working prototype.

Is not TD of HCM in fabrication??

Yes as this type of integrated complex system is sort of system of systems, that is airframe sections , combustor chamber, internal piping, valves, outside layers , fuel tank integrated with airframe, H1 booster ie LV a lot of such small development joined together and in some cases a first time in the country development. Each subsystem and system level first made at coupon level accordingly, tested and qualified first to satisfy performance parameter. Then scaled up to a working subscale proto for ground test, then many such tests later it gets to first flight test stage. Hence it takes so much time.
