India’s 5th-gen fighter aircraft project award likely by Q4 FY27, says L&T Executive VP

NEW DELHI: Engineering major Larsen & Toubro Ltd, which, along with state-owned Bharat Electronics Ltd in a joint venture, is among the contenders for developing and manufacturing the ambitious 5th generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, anticipates the final award for the project by January-March of 2027.

“Aeronautical Development Agency, which is the customer, is likely to shortlist the eligible bidders for the AMCA programme based on the Expression of Interest where we also provided. This shortlist is expected in the current quarter, October to December, 2025,” said P. Ramakrishnan, Executive Vice President, L&T, in a post earnings conference call.

“Based on the shortlist, we expect the customer to issue the Request for Proposal (RFP) sometime in Q4 (Jan-Mar) of the current financial year (2025-26) and the announcement of the winner to build the prototype most likely is going to happen in Q4 (January-March) of the next financial year (2026-27) after the bidding process,” said Ramakrishnan.

In September, the consortium revealed that it will participate in the Expression of Interest notice issued by Government of India's Aeronautical Development Agency, which has elicited interest from companies which are technically capable for developing, building prototypes, supporting flight test and certification of AMCA.

Test flight by FY30

A 5th generation fighter aircraft includes advanced features such as stealth capabilities which allows a small or negligible radar signature, advanced engines with supercruise ability, which entails achieving supersonic speed without afterburner, advanced sensors as well as all domain awareness and network-centric capabilities.

If selected for developing a 5th generation fighter aircraft, the mandate of the L&T and Bharat Electronics consortium would be to build the prototype, airframe, jigs, fixtures, system integration and undertake the flight certification process.

Ramakrishnan further added that if the project is awarded in the January-March of the next financial year 2026-27, the first prototype is expected to be delivered in 2028 or 2029 and the test flight will happen in the financial year 2029-30.

“In terms of serial production, I guess we are still around eight or nine years away,” added Ramakrishnan.

Both L&T and Bharat Electronics have provided major aero-structure modules and have developed mission-critical avionics and electronic systems for India’s Light Combat Aircraft programme resulting in the development of the Tejas fighter aircraft.

Apart from consortium of L&T and Bharat Electronics, other contenders for the AMCA programme reportedly include state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd, Brahmos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd with consortium partners Goodluck India and Axiscades Technologies, Adani Defence and Aerospace Ltd as well as Kalyani Strategic Systems.

It is for the first time that the government has opened the development of a fighter aircraft programme to private companies, whereas traditionally state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics has enjoyed a monopoly.

While the 4th generation Tejas fighter aircraft, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics slowly enters service into the Indian Air Force, China already has operational fifth-generation fighter aircraft and is currently undertaking flight tests of sixth-generation fighter aircraft.

L&T-BEL’s 5th Gen Fighter Aircraft Alliance onboards Dynamatic Technologies as Exclusive Partner

Mumbai: The consortium of L&T and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), which is pursuing India’s 5th Generation Fighter Aircraft (AMCA), is pleased to announce the onboarding of Dynamatic Technologies Ltd (DTL), as an exclusive partner for the programme.

This collaboration will combine DTL’s global expertise in complex aerostructures and sub-systems manufacture for leading aerospace original equipment manufacturers, with L&T’s engineering excellence and BEL’s cutting-edge electronics expertise. This synergy brings unique strength to AMCA’s development and boosts domestic capabilities in advanced aerospace manufacturing.

Commenting on the development, Mr Arun Ramchandani, Senior Vice President & Head, L&T Precision Engineering & Systems, said: “Adding Dynamatic Technologies as an exclusive partner to this consortium brings unmatched agility and precision to our mission. This partnership is as much about building a next-gen fighter jet as it is about redefining the Indian Aerospace industrial ecosystem”.

Mr Udayant Malhoutra, CEO & Managing Director, Dynamatic Technologies Ltd, said: “We have been at the forefront of building supersonic aircraft structures for the past three decades. Our pioneering legacy, combined with advanced engineering expertise of Larsen & Toubro, brings together a unique partnership with the capabilities required to deliver India’s fifth-generation fighter aircraft”.
