Naval Offshore Patrol Vessels of Indian Navy and Coast Guard : Updates & Discussions

View attachment 38721

Pipavav shipyard under the new ownership still lists NOPVs in their inventory with two 83% complete. Navy should try to rejuvenate the program, it should be cheap. Or try to find export customers.

Why does the Indian Coast Guard have different ship classes for similar specs?

I've always wondered—if the Indian Coast Guard needs patrol vessels with almost identical specs (displacement around 1800–2200 tons, armed with a 30mm gun, a couple of 12.7mm guns, water cannons, and a helo hangar with standard sensor packages), why do they keep ordering different classes under separate programs?

Wouldn't it be more efficient to place a single bulk order—say, 20 ships of the same design—under one contract?

Common sense and MoD should not be spoken in same sentence.

A fine class of ship - however with advent of aerial drones and low cost ballistic missile/rocket attacks on ships - OPV concept of minimally armed ships is under threat.

If IN were tasked to secure the Bab Al Mandab, these OPVs wont cut it.

what could this be?
  • Aerial Spraying Equipment/Pollution Control: Micronair (part of Micron Sprayers Ltd) is a leading manufacturer of specialist rotary atomizers and spray systems primarily for agricultural, public health (mosquito/locust control), and aerial oil spill dispersal applications. These systems are designed to be mounted on various aircraft, including the Dornier Do 228 and Britten-Norman Islander, which are used by naval and coast guard forces for maritime surveillance and pollution control efforts.

From Google

The Indian Navy uses a Micronair pollution prevention system on its Dornier Do-228 maritime surveillance aircraft for pollution detection and control.

Micronair System in Indian Navy

Function: The system provides the capability to spray a dispersal agent over a designated surface, which is used for managing and controlling marine pollution.

Aircraft: This equipment is fitted specifically onto the Dornier Do-228 aircraft, a multi-role Short Range Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft manufactured under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Role: The inclusion of the Micronair system enhances the Do-228's role beyond standard surveillance, allowing the Navy and Coast Guard to perform environmental response and protection operations.

The first of 11 next-generation offshore patrol vessels (NOPVs), Shachi (Yard 1280), was launched at Goa Shipyard Ltd. The ship will augment existing 10 OPVs/ NOPVs for multi-domain operations, such as defence & surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, HADR and anti-piracy missions.
