Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missile : News, Updates and Discussions

Good video from News18 with ex Brahmos Dr Sudhir Mishra , some welcome info.

- air launched version is 2200kg, must have done very good weight optimisation work in last 7-8 years
- made a smaller engine for the NG version that matches the present (ie imported) engine
- NG is ~ 1200kg , there will be 5 NG on Su30 (marketing , same as 4-5 rudram 3 shown on Su30)

I think although he meant payload would be the same ie 200kg anti ship (warhead was mentioned as common like airframe in original JV, which means Rus export version warhead) , there is chance that the domestic version will have the larger 300kg one we currently used. Obviously for export we will also give 200kg warhead anti ship , but the domestic one can be higher. Its a matter of doing the full technical fitment, right CG balance, testing & certifying etc that has already been done. I have heard before the NG version was planned for ~ 1350 kg (compared to cited 1200kg here) which would explain a higher payload possibility.

This is different diameter. There is no imported engine for this new version.
But still, it's a joint venture between Russia and India. Then the question will be what technology input Russia will provide here. on the engine or electronic and guidance system?

As you mentioned, it is a joint company, Brahmos Aerospace, and they are undertaking the development of a completely new system. If assistance is not required, we will not need to use Russian components in the missile. 49% still their share.

The guidance will be our i guess cause it's gonna have aesa seeker, booster from Russia likely, Russians would also likely to induct the brahmos ng, cause of its weight & Speed,
The brahmos orders will likely to increase, after it's incredible performance and the superiority which it showed destroying the PAF air bases, highly chance of orders from Vietnam & indonesia will be coming,

Yes I meant by engine performance, the thrust it produces. The original Rus ramjet was already a highly compact system. To miniaturise the same into a smaller dia 500-510mm while keeping the same performance & speed bumped a notch more is very good technical understanding of the core ramjet tech.
Curious about which program fed what between LFRJ and PJ-10 , both at DRDL. Way back in 2017-2019 period the LFRJ PD Sunita Devi Jena got one Aeronautical Society award for innovation. We are yet to see first STAR LFRJ engine test and yet Brahmos keep upgrading in mission mode. She did work on Akash and K15 too but has been leading the LFRJ project for the past 10 years and the award was annual ie for something done in the previous 1-2 year. Core tech wise would it matter much whether there are different engines of dia 350mm , 500mm and 600mm class ?

quite likely they will be happy with the money , they get 50% profit share.

All solid fuel parts are made by us. The fuel kerosene grade I think was imported before but now indigenised.

As for the orders, unless the Islamic SE Asian countries are really butt-hurt (esp Malaysia Indonesia) from seeing pak jihadis getting destroyed , there should be some progress. Not sure about Rus as they really do not want to use someone else's system.

Brahmos should not be sell to Malaysia, they are in group of turkey, Pakistan, azeris, and heavily Chinese influence, we shouldn't pitch brahmos for Their SU30-SM, we can pitch mk1a with brahmos NG, the combo can make the asset deadlier for Phillipines but we aren't likely making the cut, the USA has approved the sale of 20 f16 and delay of Tejas mk1a production also makes the pitch weak, but nonetheless, Tejas mk1a with brahmi ng is a deadly combo

We started inducting Brahmos in 2002. How many do you think we have now? And we just used the older versions about 9 of them. These older versions had been updated and have a service life of 20 yrs. So we can fire unlimited number of them.
I think we will not fire this in anger in near future ( hope i should prove wrong). Pakistan won't dare to attack us now.

BrahMos NG to be mated with MiG-29, Mirage 2000 & Tejas.
Currently BrahMos-A can be carried only by Su-30 MKI.
42 a/c are known to be modified with 216 2.5 ton BrahMos-A missiles procured.

NG is also expected to be available in a 533mm tube-launched version. That's intended to arm SSKs while the SSNs will probably be able to take the legacy version. We've only had one sub-surface (pontoon) test of the legacy Brahmos so far iirc.
