Rafale DH/EH of Indian Air Force : News and Discussions

Genuine query. Does Pakistan has adequate defences to counter Brahmos , SCALP and other PGM attacks on its forward airbases? How they are going to counter salvo of Brahmos launched from MKI within Indian airspace?

They cannot counter the attack using hard methods, only soft methods like ECM.

But after the attack, they will have to count their losses, repair and rebuild.

New Delhi: Looking to increase its investment in India, French defence giant Dassault Aviation is game for manufacturing Rafale fighter jets in the country, and will make a fresh pitch for it to the Narendra Modi government, ThePrint has learnt.

French sources in the know of developments said Diplomatic Advisor to the French President, Emmanuel Bonne, who is on a visit to India, will make a pitch of the French government’s offer to make the Rafale fighters in India — if the numbers in play are closer to 100.

If a smaller number comes to pass, the French maker would not manufacture the Rafale in India as a whole but would increase the procurement of parts from the country, sources said.

The offer comes at a time when India is in the middle of induction of the 36 fighter jets ordered in 2016 by the Modi government. While these 36 jets were procured under the emergency clause, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is working on a tender for 114 new fighters.

However, there is speculation in Indian power corridors that it is easier for the country to buy another 36 Rafale fighters, along with indigenous Tejas Mk-2, than to opt for a fresh procurement process.

Top government sources told ThePrint that any call on additional Rafale fighter jets would be taken only after the delivery of the first 36 are complete. However, they noted that the Rafales are expensive.

expensive versus what? Tejas?
Every purchaser found a product expensive. It's the bargaining game.

With a second order of 36, we can at least delay the MRFA by 2 more years or so.

It's impossible for GoI to go for a direct purchase of 90+ Rafales right now. There's already the Mk1A, Mig-29 and MKI contracts lined up. The Avro and a series of helicopter contracts are also pending. There's also the massive MKI upgrade program pending. UCAVs and force multipliers...

Do people really expect that a 21st century multirole jet fighter would not be expensive? Do they think it would be in the same price range as a Renault Clio?

If you want cheap fighters, we could sell SPAD VII instead. Combat-proven, the aircraft of choice of ace pilots during WW1.

People are even questioning the replacement program of 60+ year old aircraft based. What else u expecting then?

It's relative to our budget. Because there are three fighter jet deals coming up that are much cheaper than the Rafale and vested interests are definitely going to compare the costs, especially with LCA Mk1A.

These people should be reminded that the real cost of a weapon isn't how much you spend on it -- it's how much you'd have to spend on rebuilding your country if you didn't have the weapon. India's neighbors aren't friendly. China is already hard at work salami-slicing parts of the Himalaya so as to get control of headwaters and be able to divest them to their own side of the mountains. And there's no one in China to protest against how much is spent on the military...

Because you know the cost of LCA Mk1a? Even the cost of LCA Mk1 is not known. :giggle:

We obviously do not know the exact price, since the contract is yet to be signed, but the Mk1A's unit cost is currently estimated to be less than $43M. MoD wants each jet to cost 250-275Cr, and the final price was said to be 310Cr. We will likely know the exact amount in Feb. And this cost is considered high due to the short production run.

Neither Pak nor China are considered existential threats to India. So the need for greater priority in defence spending is simply not there.

I suppose the biggest potential existential threat from either Pakistan or China is nukes. And BMD capability is one of those with the highest priorities since the main threats to India come from SRBMs, MRBMs and IRBMs and the technology to intercept such missiles has been developed. While simultaneously improving our own deterrence by investing in SSBNs, ICBMs, MIRVs, space and hypersonic technologies. The spending in these areas is quite high.

Other than that, our security calculus simply accepts by default that no country in the world is capable of invading India at this time. Pakistan does not have the capability. China is hindered by mountains. Other neighbours are too weak. And other great and superpowers are too far away and have no access to a land bridge to pose any sort of major invasion threat.

French explaining indians how they are living in an unfriendly neighborhood and why they should buy fancy expensive stuff from them. How original and convincing .

Hilarious, Why would we wont know its price?

Uncle Sam's fighters are making serious implications on french I guess, or else France will not offer such things.
Hope we choose either F15EX or Rafale as mmrca2 winner.

The Panther is for the NUH requirement. Rafale replaces MRFA.

I don't think the govt will sacrifice SPM programs for GTG. So France will have to find other areas to force the govt's hand which is not under SPM.

Pardon my ignorance....

SPM will be followed for both C 295 and Rafale , that is a certainity

Panther for NUH is still an open question , Russians will try to stop it like they did with Korean SP Anti aircraft Guns

C-295 is not part of SPM. It's ready for signature.

The Russians managed to stop the deal because the Korean gun did not have either a PESA or an AESA radar. They simply got lucky. They won't have the same luck with Panther, as long as it comes in as L1/T1. But I think the Americans will win this tender.
