National Security Advisory Board Blows 5g Bugle Build Local Muscle Get Real On China & News Pertaining To Huawei's Prospects Around The World.

Basically for a common man 5g is not very differentiating he wouldn't come to know the difference. But for industries like stock exchange, banks, data centers, hospitals, airline firms etc, this technology is more useful for IoT implementation. In defence the mmWave radars are not new and they have been used to track incoming projectiles( CIWS), inter-satellite linkage has been in place since decades using the same technology.
But since it requires more infrastructure like transceiver infrastructure for point to point and multipoint communication than 4G for was communication topology, China is one country with larger manufacturing capacity to fulfil the orders at lower cost price. But if India wants, it can develop infrastructure to build it at home as well.

With the repeated investments from a number of global investors in the recent past, it seems to me that the 5G tech Jio has claimed to have made is indeed a viable product. How viable I wonder ? Good enough to get some export customers too ? If I recall correctly some of Jio's 5G labs were based in the US and most of the recent investment in Jio came from the US too. Either way interesting times ahead.

A friend who works in Qualcomm 5G system team (responsible for defining specification for 5G chipset) candidly admitted that there is no real practical usage of 5G. 4G is good enough for all current applications.
Cross your hearts, how many folks here have needed speed beyond 3G?
4G is overkill and 5G, well, why the heck you need it is simply not clear.

Instead of 5G, we should invest in large scale public Wifi deployment. Technology is mature, cheap and is much easier to deploy.

The thing about 5G is, it will last a long time, so new companies can always set up shop. 6G is at least 10 years away.
As far as India goes, there is not real need for any speed beyond 3G. To be honest, even in North America, 3G has been more than enough most of the folks. For maps, mails, video streaming, gaming, apps etc, 3G is enough. Supplement it with WiFi, there is no usecase to go beyond 3G.

You are looking at it from a low end user's perspective. But from the ISP's or a high end user's perspective, it's different.

3G did solve the issue of data access bottle neck upto some extent, but was not good enough for video streaming services. This issue was addressed in 4G. The only reason 5G is being promoted because it will save many companies and 10s of thousands of jobs.

You are absolutely right about wifi. Currently 80% of data is accessed through wifi and it will be only grow in future.

C-DOT was started 2 years before Huawei.. Thanks to our bureaucracy who shut down every project at final stage, we didn't have our own version of Huawei !! It's still not late and private sector can still jump in grab this golden opportunity.

private sector in India has become too lazy to invest in R&D , all that they do is do a joint venture with a foreign company who will bring in the technology & products , these ppl will put a label on it and provide support for it. Unless we are denied some thing completely we never work towards producing it , a disadvantage of globalization. Private sector in India has a lot of potential but sadly it seems we have encouraged the wrong set of companies.

High End user have dedicated WiFi in their split level apartments, offices and on the road, they have 4G. Rest of India does not even need more than 3G. ISP will optimize their investments for what sells. At best you will get partial 4/5G coverage with bandwidth limited by backbone network. There may be an improvement of latency. I don't know where it will be used for.
