Pakistan cannot fight Covid-19 without medicinal imports from India: PPMA

KARACHI: The Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association (PPMA) has warned the federal government that any decision to discontinue the import of raw material of medicines from India will weaken the country’s ability to fight coronavirus.

The warning to this effect came as the office-bearers of PPMA addressed a press conference at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Monday.

The PPMA representatives appealed the federal government that it should continue with the existing arrangements of import of drugs’ raw material. Any decision to disrupt the international supply chains associated with the Pakistani pharmaceutical industry will lessen the ability of the country’s medical practitioners to treat the cases of Covid-19, they added.

Speaking on the occasion, PPMA Senior Vice-Chairman Syed Farooq Bukhari said that import of pharmaceutical raw material from India or from any other country was done under a well-regulated regime being overseen by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan and other relevant state agencies.

“We are in a virtual state of war against Covid-19 whose cases have been on the rise in Pakistan as the pharmaceutical industry is the backbone of the national apparatus put in place to fight the menace of coronavirus,” he said.

He said that the vital inputs of the pharmaceutical industry should remain readily available to the drug manufacturers so that there was no shortage of essential medicines in the country during the current health emergency.

“From the day one of the anti-coronavirus lockdown in the country, the pharmaceutical industry has been doing its best continue with its production so that there is no shortage of medicines during the on-going health crisis,” he maintained.

The senior PPMA official said that the federal cabinet should not take any decision against the import of medicine raw material from India or from any other country when there had been an unabated increase in Covid-19 patients in the country.

“It is unfortunate that the federal and provincial governments in the country have been in the process of setting up more and more quarantine centres, isolation facilities, and special hospital wards to accommodate the Covid-19 cases but along with this we also need a constant supply of essential medicines to treat the patients of coronavirus,” he said.

“For this, it is mandatory that the pharmaceutical industry of Pakistan should continue with its operations to its full capacity as for this we need a constant supply of raw material from our international clients,” he said.

Bukhari said that the federal cabinet should realize that raw material of medicines was being imported from India under a well-regulated and highly supervised regime keeping in view the constant needs of the pharmaceutical industry.

The decision had been taken last year to allow the import of the drugs’ raw material from India due to the fact that in absence of such an arrangement there would be an acute shortage of essential medicines in the market or otherwise their prices would increase manifold. There was also the chance of emergence of a black market of medicines if the regular import of the raw material from the neighbouring country was discontinued, he said.

He said that a very few medicines in the finished form were imported from India as they fall under the category of the life-saving drugs including vaccines required in the country to treat life-threatening situations including dog and snake bites.

The import of pharmaceutical raw material from India is being done under a proper SRO no 429 approved both by ministries of Commerce and National Health Services, he said.

PPMA office-bearers appealed to the Prime Minister Imran Khan and his special assistant on National Health Services not to take any decision against the import of therapeutic goods from India or from any other country in view of the highly critical situation of Covid-19 in Pakistan.

The essential medicines are also constantly required to treat other infectious and lethal diseases in the country during this national emergency, they said.

Maybe signalling.

That profiting from epidemic of own creation, isn't West doing exactly the same? Specially USA in name of global warming.

Their emissions took earth to this stage and now they are making massive profits by selling green Earth products at high premium to third world country. Telling them they can't use cheap coal but they had built entire economy on it. How is it less horrible than China?

He's talking thru his hat.
What's wrong with using this opportunity to get few things done with China and neutralizing lot of headache of future. More so when we won't be capable of killing China completely and world is not interested beyond rhetoric and maybe a few cosmetic steps.

We should propose a deal China can't refuse, get this boundary dispute done, neutralize their support to Pakistan. Give and take something instead of wasting this opportunity for silly, non impactful things. This pandemic has devastated us too and some help will go long way.

I fully agree with you

China is.worried that US and Europe
Will hurt it economically

So.they will lure India on its side

If we can convince them to Dump Pakistan or even the make the LoC permanent for ever , It would be a huge victory for India

Pakistan cannot refuse China's orders

As of now with the Gadkari statement y'day , we're more in sync with the rest of the world than we are with China. Proposing a deal with China on our terms requires us to command a certain position. I don't think we've reached that stage yet.

Besides, aren't all the signals emanating from Delhi contrary to your suppositions be it the directive on foreign portfolio investments from our neighborhood requiring clearance at the highest level, relaxation of labor laws designed to boost foreign investment fleeing China, recent clashes on the LAC, etc.

Improving your economy by attracting more investment is not anti China and those brawls on LAC are regular affair, or maybe China sending a signal that US is thousands of Km away, I am next door, I can create headache every single day.

Nowhere did I say we should build China on our expense, we should keep strengthening ourselves meanwhile trying to utilise this opportunity. We dont need to go Anti China because it's fancy and everyone is doing it, if being neutral or even pro China if it yields some results we should not hesitate. Every nation in the world will do it, they will sell out this Morality within seconds. We have more vested interests.

Those brawls on the LAC have been on going since 1967 without a shot being fired. In between they turned intense. Are you suggesting that they need remind us everyday that they're next door & how should we take such reminders? Pretend as if nothing is wrong & go about claiming normalcy. Does China actually think pricking Philippines or Bhutan is the same as pricking India or is it your contention that it's the same? Are you suggesting that there shouldn't be any repercussions to such behavior? That we should accept it as the new normal? What's wrong with you?

I think they're among the top 5 investors in India in the last 3-4 years if you were you consider both direct & indirect means & Hong Kong . Where have we prevented them from investing?

We're just saying it'd be on our terms. By our terms, I mean we aren't going to let their goods flood our market by being direct or indirect participants in the BRI or thru the back door by mechanisms such as RCEP. It's as simple as that.

The door to investments has always been open to China except certain sectors & of late we aren't willing to let them take controlling stake in our companies especially in certain crucial sectors.

And what repercussions would those be? Criticizing China in WHO? For military adventures China is more than answered, where did I say we should let them attack us? Doklam should be a recent example on difference between picking up with Philippines and India.

I never said strengthen China on our expense, don't know where these arguments are coming from.

BTW While we are at repercussions what was our reply to US President when he threatened India?

When a weaker side we should pick our battles wisely, stupid chest thumping is counter productive and never present you as strong power.

Probably CCP hasn't disbursed it's monthly payments to "The Hindu". N Ram & team subtly reminding them that there's always the other set of Chinese they can do business with. A set which isn't very demanding either. As of now.
