UK Royal Navy: News & Discussions

I don't get this Paddy & Pops. I mean wasn't the VLS part of the original scheme of things or is this an afterthought & if so why ?

Wasn't it evident from the beginning that US & Oz Submarines would've to conform to US naval doctrines being vassal states ?

So this piece of information does come as a surprise or maybe not. Not when you go through this particular detail . 👇

The FMS Congressional notification reveals that the ambition of the programme has expanded significantly from an initial £40M ($50M) to around £800M ($1Bn), reflecting its growing scale and complexity.

What's the implication of this escalation & who's going to foot the bill ? Is it what I think this is ? Another planned extortion of the Aussies who even otherwise can't tell the front from the rear ?

What's more I've a feeling the Aussies have a real fetish of being taken for a ride by their Anglo cousins ! They actually look forward to it.

How plead thou , pops ? @Optimist

The ship was "mistakenly" identified as an Israeli vessel, according to the same report

Hezbollah claimed this morning that they had fired a "naval cruise missile " at an Israeli warship off Lebanon's coast, causing a "direct hit".According to Israeli assessments, the vessel was a British warship. Extent of damage unknown.

Isn't it time you re christen the Royal Navy to the Royal Coast Guard , Paddy ? I mean you may find this episode trifling but this steady downfall of the RN is beyond hilarious. @BMD

3 months later, they pulled an about-face.

Type-83 destroyer program is being cancelled in favour of smaller, cheaper 'drone command vessels'.

This comes right after Germany cancelled their large F-126 'frigate' program and instead decided to buy smaller frigates of the MEKO A-200 design.

Even Type-32 Frigates are being shelved apparently.

It is NOT normal for all boats in a 5-hull fleet to be in dock at the same time. Especially a fleet that carries strategic importance like the SSNs.

I'm left to wonder if this is down to the reactor problems they've been having. PWR2 is the first naval reactor that's supposedly UK-designed (earlier PWR1 was directly derived from US designs). If I was a betting man, I'd say that while they may have absorbed plenty of 'know-how' from the Americans, the level of their 'know-why' knowledge might still be nascent. And I think that's what is showing.

Just as well, considering they're going back to seeking direct US assistance for the upcoming PWR3 (publicly known to be derived from the Virginia-class's S9G). So it seems they've abandoned trying to acquire that know-why through iterative R&D, probably due to cost reasons.
