South Korean KAI KF-21 Boramae Developments

South Korea has laid out the funding and timeline for the development of a new indigenous fighter engine.

Seoul’s “Advanced Aviation Engine Development Project” will see an investment of W3.4 trillion ($3.4 billion) and run from 2027-2040, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.

The programme will result in an engine with military thrust of 16,000lb (71kN), and thrust of 24,000lb (106kN) with afterburners. Previously, Seoul has indicated that the engine’s military thrust would be 15,000lb.

Seoul has long promoted its intention to develop an indigenous fighter engine. Hanwha Aerospace, which produces foreign fighter engines under licence, will play a key role in the engine, which will power the future Block 3 variant of the Korea Aerospace Industries KF-21 fighter.
Realistic timeline.

They locally manufacture F414 with 50% ToT for B1 and 2.

B3 is an AMCA-class design and they need a new engine for it. It will be an indigenous design.

It's unclear if they will rely on foreign raw material suppliers for the hot core along with cooling tech. Doosan have nickel SX for vanes and turbine blades that manage 1900+K already. The B3's engine needs to be able to handle 2000-2100K at the minimum.

KIMS, their Midhani, recently signed a ToT with Hanwha for a new SX superalloy that they claim is rhenium-free.

Good for them. But it's still not stealth without IWB.

Man. Stop being so obsessed with Stealth and IWB.

USAF workhorse is F15 and F16 and it will continue to be the work horse for a long time.

Where is our workhorse?

A 4.5 gen Twin engine jet with 120KN Indian aero engine is a need of the hour for both IAF and Navy. Tired of this obsession with 5th gen and 6th gen.

Rafale F5 is not going to stealth but it will control drones and has sensor fusion.

Isn't this what the Koreans are trying with KF-21? If stealth isn't the priority then what is the point of this program?

Then why they are inducting over 1000 F-35s?

Su-30MKI🤦‍♂️

Against hoardes of Chinese 5th gen jets our 4.5 gen jets will be on backfoot. We need stealth fighters of our own to counter this.

And will be available post 2030. Even MKI UPG., LCA MK2 & AMCA would control CCAs.

We cannot make SU-30MKI without Russian kit bases.

I meant, where is our indigenous 4.5 gen twin engine workhorse?

Even South Koreans start with a 4.5 gen base and then will upgrade it with IWB.

F35's mission availability is only 50 percent at any given point of time. It is too costly even for USAF to operate F35 in large numbers.

TEDBF and Mk2 are going to extremely crucial for both NAVY and AF respectively.

lmao what? pls stop bro.

the tejas mk1a is meant for continuos patrol of border regions which is why it was built for high availability and ease of maintenance. It will also take over a lot of the tasks the jaguar and the mig23/27 performed.

the tejas mk2 is our mirage2k / gripen equivalent which is meant for higher End A-G and SEAD DEAD as well as combat patrol and air superiority

the rafale is our high end backbone for A-G as well as CAP. Its our 2nd line air sueperiority fighter(will be first line until the su30s get their upgrade)

the su30 is the true backbone of the IAF for all the higher end missions although the rafale does share many roles with it.

These are all 4.5 gen jets(the su30 not yet but with upgrades its hits 4.5+)

How many more do you want? according to the IAf, they want 180 tejas mk1a, 120 ish tejas mk2(could eventually be even more who knows), 140 rafale , 200ish upgraded su30s(older jets retired). Thats 640 4.5 gen jets by the 2030s.

Why would be work on a completely new twin engine workhorse when we have the perfect twin engine workhorse alr? why waste time and money on a completely new jet when we alr have a jet thats solves that issue?

The AMCA and the F35/su57 are needed for the 5-5.5 gen part of the eqn. China is predicted to produce around 70 5th gens a year. scale that over 10 years and you get 700 5th gen jets. on avg they deploy 1/6th of the AF in the tibet side so around 120 jets minimum vs India in Tibet and who knows how many more in a conflict.

TEDBEF is a useless design that gives nothing significant over the rafale M. We get upgradability but the TEDBEF is not going to be so much better than a rafale F5 which is what it will be competing against by the time it comes out. we need a stealthy 5th gen made for STOBAR. not another 4.5 gen. We have the rafale for that.

WE NEED STEALTH FOR OUR OPERATIONAL NEEDS RIGHT NOW let alone in the future. WE HAVE ENOUGH 4.5GEN JETS ALREADY PLANNED.

stop being delusional about the effect of 4.5 gen vs 5th gen. You will get walloped to kingdom come against China if your rely solely on 4.5 gen in the 2030s. . We cant completely stop china for a very long time just like how china is taking a lot time just to get somewhat close to the US let alone on par. We need to make an invasion or skirmish extremely costly and not worth the price and we need complete dominance over pakistan if we dont want to suffer in a full scale 2 front war.
