We need to order 7 more asap. Continuous construction.

P-17B order to be given proabaly in 2027, once all deliveries of p-17A are completed. NGC construction will start by then, joining the ngmvs and the extra talwar classes.
But that will result in a break of construction activities.

Continuous construction like US has for its destroyers or China for its Type 054, will help us plan yearly. Having a sure shot delivery schedule of 3 advanced frigates every year for 5 years.

Precisely.

The P-17B RFP is expected to be out in the 3rd or 4th quarter of FY 2025. Now, depending on how quickly the files are processed, a contract might be awarded within FY 2026, allowing for keel laying to begin by 2027, following the last P-17A commissioning in FY 2026. Hopefully, that is indeed what happens.

However, one must remember that the P-17B itself is a gap-filler between the P-17A ships and the NGF. It perfectly illustrates the need to do better long-term planning and scheduling for the Navy.

There is no way that the contract is awarded this year or even by March 2026, RFP will come out this year and the bidders will apply and then the L1 is chosen, all this will take at least 1 yr. Contract awardation (at the earliest) will happen in Q1 2027 and start of construction the same year or 2028.

Yeah, that's where we agree. As I said, the expectation is for the RFP to be out in Q3 or Q4 of FY 2025.

Yeah, that's pretty likely as well. I guess I was going for the best-case scenario, where the contract is awarded by end-2026, which would allow steel-cutting, or at least manufacturing of the subsystems, by the end of 2027.

But yeah, a 2028 start is also equally (maybe even more) likely, in which case we probably won't be seeing the first of these ships before 2034 at the earliest. Wish they had had this conversation maybe in 2022-23, as the P-17A ships were being launched.

Only 26 % indigenous content 🙁

Aye? Indegenious ki definition change Kardi kya inhone?
A more stricter definition?

GRSE had purchased Carbon fiber composite materials from SAAB for the superstructure of the Kamorta class ASW corvettes. The composites were said to be stronger & lighter than traditional alloys. The composites also have some radar/IR absorbent properties:

Saab's Role Behind INS Kavaratti

It is likely that this agreement continues & the GRSE built P-17A frigates will have composite superstructure. SAAB was also talking about manufacturing these composite materials in India. Maybe that's what they mean by 26% indigenous content for superstructure. 26% of the material was made in India & the rest was imported for Europe.

INDIAN NAVY SET TO COMMISSION FRONTLINE STEALTH FRIGATES UDAYGIRI AND HIMGIRI

Posted On: 11 AUG 2025 6:18PM by PIB Delhi

Indian Navy is preparing for the simultaneous commissioning of two advanced frontline frigates - Udaygiri (F35) and Himgiri (F34) on 26 Aug 25.

This will be the first time that two major surface combatants from two prestigious Indian Shipyards are being commissioned at the same time at Visakhapatnam.

This event underscores India's accelerating naval modernisation and its ability to deliver sophisticated warships from multiple shipyards.

This milestone showcases the success of the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives in the defence sector. Udaygiri, the second ship of the Project 17A stealth frigates, has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, while Himgiri is the first of P17A ships being constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Kolkata.

In another major milestone for the Indian Navy, Udaygiri is the 100th ship designed by the Navy's Warship Design Bureau.

Stealthy, versatile and indigenous

Udaygiri and Himgiri represent a generational leap over earlier designs. Displacing about 6,700 tons, the P17A frigates are roughly five percent larger than their predecessor Shivalik-class frigates and yet incorporate a sleeker form, with a reduced radar cross section.

They are powered by Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion plants using diesel engines and gas turbines that drive controllable-pitch propellers and are managed through an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS). The weapon suite includes supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, 76 mm MR Gun and a combination of 30 mm and 12.7 mm Close-in Weapon Systems and the Anti-submarine/ Underwater weapon systems.

Both ships are the result of an industrial ecosystem spanning over 200 MSMEs, supporting approximately 4,000 direct jobs and more than 10,000 indirect jobs.
