People's Liberation Army Navy : News & DIscussions

So when's this Capt America shield going to be operational , sweetie ? Would it be before or after Taiwan is taken by China ? In dummy terms is it coming before 2030 or later ?

Wataminute , pls ignore what's written above . If you didn't assist Ukraine against Russia after pumping them up with promises restricting your support to low & medium tech defence instead of the patriots or THAADs you should've supplied them with , what are the chances you'd come to Taiwan's aid ?! Nil .

They don't even share a land border with any nation so no chance of supplying them with any weapons once hostilities are initiated. All we'd see is Irish Joe or some dummy who'd replaced him wheeze out his condemnation on China , impose limited sanctions otherwise family business would be affected & pass resolutions in the UN.

Feel free to induct them whenever you choose to as you aren't going to use them irrespective of where you deploy them .

China's most advanced aircraft carrier nears completion in 'symbol of growing military might'

The vessel has been in development since 2018 and according to satellite images, it is nearly finished but US intelligence has suggested that it won't be fully operational until 2024.

China's most advanced aircraft carrier appears to be nearing completion, with experts suggesting the vessel could soon be launched.
The newly developed Type 003 carrier has been under construction at the Jiangnan Shipyard near Shanghai since 2018.

The launch for the carrier has been long anticipated and satellite images show work on the vessel is nearly done.
It has been described as a "symbol of the country's growing military might" and a "seminal moment" in China's modernisation efforts, by think tank the Centre of Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

According to CSIS, China has in the past paired military milestones with existing holidays and anniversaries and it suggested the vessel could be launched as soon as Friday to coincide with the national Dragon Boat Festival.

In satellite images taken on Tuesday equipment behind the carrier appears to have been removed, a step toward flooding the entire drydock and floating the vessel.

Previous images showed work ongoing and cloud coverage meant satellite images weren't possible from Wednesday to Friday.

China's Ministry of National Defence has not yet responded to a request for comment.

A launch date has not been announced but state-run newspaper Global Times said this week that it "could be launched soon", adding the Chinese navy had recently released a promotional video.

The United States estimates the carrier won't be operational until 2024, first needing to undergo extensive sea trials, but it is China's most advanced yet.

The new carrier class is fitted with a catapult launch system that will "enable it to support additional fighter aircraft, fixed-wing early-warning aircraft, and more rapid flight operations and thus extend the reach and effectiveness of its carrier-based strike aircraft," the US Defence Department said in its annual report to Congress on China's military in November.

"In particular, the PRC's (People's Republic of China's) aircraft carriers and planned follow-on carriers, once operational, will extend air defence coverage beyond the range of coastal and shipboard missile systems and will enable task group operations at increasingly longer ranges," it said, adding that the Chinese navy's "emerging requirement for sea-based land-attack systems will also enhance the PRC's ability to project power".

The development is part of the broader modernisation of China's military capabilities, as it seeks to extend its influence in the region.

It is already home to the largest navy in the world, in terms of the number of ships but it is not near the capabilities of the US Navy.

The development of the carrier comes as the US has been increasing its focus on the region, including in the South China Sea.

Cambodia: Beijing-funded work begins on controversial naval base

Phnom Penh, June 8, 2022 (AFP) - Cambodia and China on Wednesday kicked off a Beijing-funded project to renovate a naval base that the United States fears will be used for Chinese military purposes.
The base has been a contentious issue between Cambodia and the US for years. Washington has long suspected that the site is being converted for use by China as it seeks to expand its international influence through a network of military bases.

The base is strategically located in the Gulf of Thailand, providing access to the South China Sea, much of which is claimed by Beijing.

Earlier this week, the US daily The Washington Post, citing Western officials who requested anonymity, said a new facility was being built at the Cambodian base of Ream, near Sihanoukville, to be used "exclusively" by the Chinese navy.

Both countries deny this allegation, with Phnom Penh saying that the development of the base is "not a secret".

Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Banh and Chinese Ambassador Wang Wentian were on hand Wednesday to see work begin on the new facilities, including a boat maintenance workshop, two jetties, a dry dock, a slipway and sand dredging to allow larger ships to dock.

Heavy construction equipment can be seen on site.

"There are allegations that the upgraded Ream base will be used exclusively by the Chinese military. No, it is not that at all," Tea Banh told several hundred guests, including foreign diplomats.

"Don't worry too much, the Ream base is very small (...). It will not pose a threat to anyone, anywhere," he added.

The project will be completed in two years, a Cambodian official said.

The United States and other countries in the region have "expressed concern about the lack of transparency about the intent, nature and scope of this project," according to Stephanie Arzate, the US embassy spokeswoman.

"An exclusive military presence by the People's Republic of China in Ream could threaten Cambodia's autonomy and undermine regional security," she told AFP.

Concerns about the base date back to 2019, when the Wall Street Journal reported on a secret draft agreement allowing Beijing to dock warships there.

I'm very interested to know how the Chinese managed to power an EMALS with conventional gas turbines.

And what are the limitations placed upon the system due to that i.e. reduction in number of aircraft that can be launched in a given period of time.

Same here. I am inclined to think they might have made breakthrough in integrated propulsion system most probably.

Long back there was a report on new Chinese marine gas turbine, capable of producing 40MW. Four such turbine inside a ship will generate enough electricity for emal.

China: YJ-21 – missile and test

One day before the Russian Sarmat was tested, China launched its brand new hypersonic missile from a heavy Type 055 cruiser. The YJ-21, ultra-fast with an unpredictable flight pattern, is part of a family of Chinese missiles designed to be ‘carrier killers’. Long aware of the potency of American aircraft carrier groups and their ability to roam the world’s oceans, destroying both naval targets and those on land, Chinese scientists have worked hard to ensure they have the means to defeat these heavily-defended mobile airfields.

With a range of up to 1,500km (930 miles), the YJ-21 can deliver a large warhead, moving so fast it punches straight through the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, destroying it instantly.

Chinese scientists plan ‘disposable’ nuclear reactor for long-range torpedo

  • Researchers in Beijing say they have designed a small, low-cost version of the Russian Poseidon underwater drone that could cross the Pacific in a week
  • Proposed reactor with 10,000km (6,200-mile) range could be launched in large numbers from almost any submarine or warship, they said

Not bad at all.

It doesn't have to operate on carriers only the J-35 can complement the J-20. Chicoms flatter us in trying to build their military to look like ours. They won't be a match for US in a combined arms conflict under high-tech conditions but they could be a problem for Japan, South Korea and Taiwan if they went at it alone without US. The only threat India is to chicoms is their nukes Indian conventional forces especially their air force won't be that much trouble for PLAAF.... unless India goes 5th gen very quickly.

It really is sad how Indian political incompetence has made the IAF a much less capable force compared to PLAAF. There was a time not too long ago when IAF was ahead of PLAAF when it came to quality of fighters. F-35 is right there for the buying which just about all of Europe has decided to buy no self respecting first world air force is buying Rafale which says a lot. Greece did buy a handful of Rafales but then decided F-35 too because they know Rafale is not a survivable platform for near future combat.

Come on India you're getting left behind for a huge air force.
