New Ninth Example of Russian 5th Generation Sukhoi Su–57 (PAK FA) With Its Enormous Fuel Tanks Spotted at Zhukovsky.

It is all well and good, but the real question for the Indian Air Force is that when will these fighters be arriving to be inducted in the Indian Air Force or will they ever arrive at all

MOSCOW, December 5. / TASS /. The fifth-generation fighter Su-57 (also known as the T-50) made its first flight with a second-stage engine. This was reported to journalists in the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

"On December 5, 2017, the newest Russian fighter of the fifth generation T-50 with the engine of the second stage made its first flight to the Gromov Flight Research Institute," the Ministry of Industry and Trade reported.

The flight was carried out by the chief-pilot of the firm "Sukhoi" (included in the UAC) Sergei Bogdan. The flight duration was 17 minutes. "The flight was regular, in accordance with the conditions of the flight assignment," the ministry said.

"A successful flight with a new engine gives an additional impetus to the program of a fifth-generation fighter. This is a testament to the high potential of Russian aircraft industry capable of creating highly intelligent advanced systems - a unique glider, innovative digital stuffing, new engines," stressed the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov.

Is this the same second stage engine We were asking for? Looks like Russia is slowly and steadily working on getting FGFA ready, hopefully some agreement is signed soon, we need this plane.

They are working towards PAK FA Phase 2 which was always the long-term plan. Something loudmouth media here choose to ignore.

VIDEO: Russia flies first Su-57 fitted with new Product 30 engine

Russia’s latest fighter aircraft flew on 5 December for the first time with the NPO Saturn “Product 30” engine, which will be the production standard for the Sukhoi Su-57.

Sukhoi has built and flown nine flight test prototypes of the Su-57 fighter powered by NPO Saturn Product 117 engines, which are derived from the AL-41F-1S afterburning turbofans developed for the Su-35.

But the Russian air force plans to replace the Product 117 in series production starting in 2020 with the Product 30 engines, possibly featuring a new engine core of which few details are known.

Russian government officials have said the Product 30 will provide more thrust and fuel efficiency, with reduced weight and maintenance requirements.

The 5 December test flight by Sukhoi chief test pilot Sergei Bogdan from the Gromov flight test centre at Zhukovsky AB lasted 17min, according to Russia’s Ministry for Industry and Trade.

Photos and video of the flight shows the Product 30 installed in the No. 1, or port-side, engine position, with a Product 117 engine remaining on the starboard side. The Product 30 features a serrated engine nozzle, compared to the flat nozzle on the Product 117.

The flight test was conducted by the second Su-57 aircraft prototype, also known as T-50-2.

"This is proof of the high potential of Russian aircraft building, capable of creating highly intelligent advanced systems," says Russian Industry and Trade minister Denis Manturov.

The Su-57 is expected to enter service as Russia’s first so-called fifth-generation fighter after the end of this decade, featuring some stealth technology, along with internal weapons bays and advanced sensors, including active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars and infrared search and track cameras.

Government testing of the Su-57 prototypes is nearing the end of the first stage, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The Putin government is still assembling the next multi-year state armaments plan, which will decide the timing and the number of Su-57s purchased through 2027. But the Ministry of Industry and Trade still the current plan remains on track, with the Su-57 becoming Sukhoi’s largest military product by 2020.

So what exactly is the deal with the PAK FA now?

Talks seem to have stalled, a lot of development seems far away, and customizations based off Indian concerns seem even farther away, last I heard the Russians weren't even handing over the tech that we paid them to develop and were extorting even more money; all of this would leave us no choice but to go for F-35's (for which we must first buy F-16's) since we'll need to maintain a technological edge over Pak and also need stealth aircraft to deal with China (who are already cranking out their own), but then the PAK FA is kind of still necessary because the F-35 was meant to be a strike fighter paired with the F-22, not an all in one solution. Oh, and did I mention the part where the bloody Russians helped the Chinese develop their stealth plane for money...?

So, where does India go from here? Even if we settle on buying a token amount of Russian T-50's at some point in the future, forget where we'd find the bulk of our stealth force, but would those T-50's even be any good? Or are we just banking on quasi-stealth ultra-upgraded versions of Rafales at this point?

Russia’s first fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet, known during its development as PAK FA and T-50, has performed its maiden flight with a new engine, designed specifically for the cutting-edge military plane.

The test flight was successfully performed on Tuesday and lasted some 17 minutes, according to the Russian Industry and Trade Ministry’s press service. A Su-57 aircraft, fitted with new engines known as ‘Product 30,’ was piloted by a chief pilot of the Sukhoi company, Sergey Bogdan.

The successful test flight of the plane with the new engines proved that Russian aircraft builders are capable of creating cutting-edge advanced systems, the press service said, citing Minister Denis Manturov. While little is known about the specifications of the new ‘Product 30,’ the engine-building company that designed it said earlier this year that it is an entirely new device, fully suitable for the fifth-generation planes.

The Su-57, known then as the T-50, stole the limelight at the MAKS2017 airshow in July, when a pair of aircraft performed amazing, physics-defying stunts.

The Su-57 plane was built to replace the Sukhoi Su-27 in frontline tactical aviation, making its maiden flight in 2010. The aircraft features a new planer, built largely from composite materials, modern radar and avionics. The estimated price tag for the cutting-edge multirole fighter is about $50 million each.

The main armament of the Su-57 is placed in internal bays in order to reduce radar cross section and air drag. It includes a recently modernized 30mm autocannon and air-to-air missiles. The plane is also capable of carrying additional armament on external pylons.

The military is expected to begin receiving the first fighters in 2018, according to Russian Airspace Forces commander Colonel General Viktor Bondarev.
