Indian family offloaded from British Airways flight ‘over crying 3-yr-old’

NEW DELHI: An Indian family has alleged that a leading European airline offloaded them from the flight because their three-year-old child was crying. While the child’s mother had managed to comfort the child when the plane was taxiing for take off, the allegedly intimidating behaviour of a cabin crew while asking the child to be seated scared the kid even more and then he started sobbing inconsolably.

The aircraft then returned to the terminal and the Indian family, along with a fewo other Indians seated behind them, were offloaded. This alleged racial behaviour took place on British Airways London-Berlin flight (BA 8495) of July 23 with a 1984 batch officer of Indian Engineering Services currently posted in the road transport ministry and his family.

The joint secretary-level officer has now complained to aviation minister Suresh Prabhu alleging “humiliation and racial behaviour” by the airline. A British Airways spokesperson said: “We take such claims like this extremely seriously and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. We have started a full investigation and are in direct contact with the customer.”

The officer’s letter to Prabhu says: “After security announcement for seat belt, my wife fastened the seat belt to my three-year-old baby... (Seated on a separate seat) my son felt uncomfortable and started crying. My wife managed to (comfort) him by taking him in her arms…. male crew member approached us and started shouting..
scolded my son to go to his seat...” “...My son got terrified and started crying(inconsolably). (An)other Indian family sitting behind us offered the child some biscuits to console him. My wife again put the boy on his designated seat and fastenedthe seat belt even though he kept on crying...,” the letter says.

The aircraft then started taxiing to the runway. “(The) same crew member came again and shouted at my son that ‘you bloody keep quiet otherwise you will be thrown out of the window’ and we would be offloaded. We were petrified,” it adds.

The plane then returned to the terminal. The officers says the crew member called in security personnel to the aircraft who took away their boarding cardsa and of those seated behind them. “My family and the other Indian family, which had offered biscuits to mys son were offloaded….,” the complaint said.

The family then made its own arrangement to travel from London City airport to London. “…the crew member made racist remarks and used words like ‘bloody’ about Indians…. I request to have the matter investigated and take strictest possible action,” he concludes.

But then it holds, for the average Indian traveler playing music without ear phones or watching a video over a mobile in similar manner during flight is also their 'right' and of course, the loud noisy talks across the aisle and adjacent too! And if one checks, either they argue or the favourite 'koi baat nahi' or 'it's ok' as if you have bothered them by complaining and they are magnanimous enough to shut it off.

On my own flight over from London, I had to tell the parents to tell their children to behave and drive in the point that it is not my job to censure their kids or them. Even then the stupid parents looked lost and could not control their child. How could they, when they don't teach their children to behave at home!

The fabric of Indian society is seeped in ill-discipline and thoughtlessness. Common sense and civic manners are non-existent. Good thing. Indians need a boot

i have a almost 3 year old kid right now..
if he decides to cry, i cant stop without diverting him
if he is made to sit separately , he wouldn t stop the cry, much less threatened
Disciplining him at that age looks more of oppression than making him understand..
i would prefer to avoid the trip itself unless absolutely necessary.

When the parents are helpless, its humane for other parents to step in and help.
what did the other couple do wrong to get sent out ?

if the parents are reason for the kid to cry its different ..

i agree with you on other counts like group of loud mouths chatting or loud music in their mobile in the train, disturbing the sleep of others .
i also feel irritated when certain rude passengers take advantage of politeness of others.

If a three year old crying is impolite, a steward using expletives in front of a three year old is even worse !!!

Correlate with a question I was asked by a family from New Zealand. The wife was a nurse. She asked me why the Indians with her, when asked where they are from, reply Kerala and not India?

Similar question was asked of me by an Australian in Dubai. There, if an Indian is asked where they are from, usual answer is Kerala and not India .....

i ve heard Indians were discriminated for the supply of drinks ( booze ) in airlines.:p

i never felt pity for Indians there.. there was a chance for the sufferer to change things for himself, for ex he can buy drink or leave the habit of drinking in flight.

but here its because of kid , there is not much can be done by the affected person.

since the narrative is from the affected party . and there is nothing from Airlines side,
essentially we are hearing one side of the story .

there are instances i have seen in Singapore Airlines , Mother with kid is given front seat with lot of leg room.

infact a doc from my batch who supported Pakistan in cricket matches those days , came out out of his silence to support Pakistan in open when my messages were against Pak. when i told Pak is going to bankrupt soon, India can threaten Pak with Indus river water etc..
i was literally shocked .

from my understanding he studied with sponsorship of Muslim religious fund , and more than believed his madrassa teachings , went to gulf after MBBS, and came back to settle in KERALA.

after all this i learnt we weren t far from Pakistsan, just safe enough . but not immune enough.
1 decade of Crappy rule can take us back to Pakistan level.
