Former Pak PM Nawaz Sharif said Pak terrorists "crossed the border" to launch attacks on Mumbai.
Story Highlights
  • Ousted Pak PM says Pak terrorists "crossed the border" to attack Mumbai
  • Suggests such attacks could have been prevented in interview to Dawn
  • Pak has dithered in prosecuting those responsible for the attacks
New Delhi: Ousted Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appeared to admit that Pakistani terrorists carried out the 2008 Mumbai attacks, known as 26/11, and suggest that such terror strikes could have been prevented. In an interview to the Dawn newspaper published on Saturday, Mr Sharif also lamented that Pakistan had isolated itself. He indicated that his country should look into why its narrative that it had been fighting terrorism had not been accepted by the international community "despite sacrifices".

India has long accused Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba of carrying out the attacks in Mumbai on 26 November, 2008, that left 166 people dead and many injured after 10 terrorists with backpacks, automatic weapons and grenades launched a three-day siege on India's financial capital targeting multiple locations.

Mr Sharif did not name Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed and Maulana Masood Azhar's Jamaat-ud-Dawah and Jaish-e-Mohammad that operate in the country with impunity in the interview. Or the Lashkar-e-Taiba, which according to India, sailed into Mumbai from Karachi, to carry out the attacks in an operation that was coordinated by Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI.

"Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can't we complete the trial?" he said, according to the newspaper.

The Mumbai case is being tried in an anti-terrorism court since 2009 but the case isn't going anywhere. Indian officials say Pakistan did not keep its end of the bargain and sent the case to court without really investigating the conspiracy that led to the attacks.

Islamabad, on the other hand, has blamed setbacks during the trial on India, insisting that New Delhi had not given "solid evidence" against Hafiz Saeed and others. When Saeed was ordered to be released after 10 months of house arrest in November last, the Pakistan government had justified the move, saying the law was equal for all.

Mr Sharif, 68, was disqualified by the Supreme Court for not being "honest and righteous" as he failed to declare in 2013 a salary he got from the company of his son in the UAE. In February, the top court also disqualified him as the head of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Former PM Nawaz Sharif's apparently conciliatory remark on the state's role in terrorism, however, is unlikely to indicate a concrete shift in Islamabad's position. Just months before Hafiz Saeed was released from detention, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had launched a sharp attack on India, over what he had described as, "brutally suppressing" people in Jammu and Kashmir.

In March again, Pakistan had attempted to drag in the Kashmir issue at the United Nations again and was pummelled by New Delhi that underlined India was still waiting for "credible action" to bring all those involved in the 2008 Mumbai attacks to justice.

He's couldn't accept this while he was the PM of Pakistan.(n)

This isn't news to anybody, even the Pakistani government to varying degrees admits that the attacks were planned in Pakistan and carried out by Pakistani nationals. The important issue is if anything will materialize from Mr. Sharif's statements. Will the world suddenly start to care? Perhaps the Indian government will kickstart an international sanctions campaign similar to the previous Iran sanctions?

In all likelihood nobody will bat an eye, the West won't do more than than make a few supportive statements to victims of terror or some other "Thoughts and Prayers" reaction. Eastern governments will at best show indifference and at worst show tacit support for Pakistan. The Pakistani government will continue to fund terror groups and the Indian government will continue to do nothing to significantly hamper their efforts. The only thing I hope for is the Indian economy becoming powerful enough that the rest of the world will be forced to care about the terror issue.

Pakistan's ousted PM Nawaz Sharif has spoken on Pakistan's hand in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks

New Delhi: The Pakistani military has taken note of the comments made by their ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. It has called a high-level "national security" meeting over what Mr Sharif said in an interview with Karachi-based daily Dawn, that Pakistani terrorists carried out the 2008 Mumbai attacks and such terror strikes could have been prevented.

"Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can't we complete the trial?" Mr Sharif said, according to the newspaper.

The Pakistani military has asked Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to discuss "recent misleading media statements on the Mumbai incident", said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistani armed forces. The meeting will be held on Monday, the ISPR said.

The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) said the former prime minister's remarks in the interview with Dawnhave been misinterpreted by the Indian media and a section of the Pakistani media. Mr Sharif is the founder of the PML(N).

Former cricketer and chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Khan, accused Mr Sharif of betraying the country since the former prime minister is facing corruption charges linked to the Panama Papers scandal.India has long accused Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba of carrying out the attacks in Mumbai on 26 November, 2008, that left 166 people dead and many injured after 10 terrorists with backpacks, automatic weapons and grenades launched a three-day siege on India's financial capital, targeting multiple locations.

India has maintained that it was Lashkar-e-Taiba's terrorists who sailed into Mumbai from Karachi to carry out the attacks in an operation that was coordinated by the Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI.

Mr Sharif's remark contradicts the official stand of Islamabad, which insists that India has not furnished enough evidence to prove that Pakistani terrorists were involved.

India has accused the Pakistani military of supporting terrorists to wage a proxy war.

The Mumbai case is being tried in an anti-terrorism court since 2009 but the case isn't going anywhere. Indian officials say Pakistan did not keep its end of the bargain and sent the case to court without really investigating the conspiracy that led to the attacks.

Mr Sharif was forced out by the Supreme Court in July over a scandal kindled by the Panama Papers leak. He became the 15th premier in Pakistan's 70-year history to be ousted before completing a full term, after the corruption investigation against him.

The claims against him stemmed from the Panama Papers leak in 2016, which sparked a media frenzy over the luxurious lifestyles and high-end London property portfolio owned by his family. Mr Sharif and his supporters have denied the allegations and hinted at a political conspiracy driven by the powerful military.

NSC meeting! Why?

Pak role in Mumbai attacks was exposed by their own inquiry commission, everyone, even the Pakistani people who claim there was no Osama in Pakistan knows who did Mumbai. Targeting Nawaz for it will not be so beneficial for Pak army no matter how much you manage to paint him traitor.

The world will never care, honestly. The key isn't to become important enough that others care, the key is to become strong/important enough to where the rest of the world can't do anything when India exercises its right to retaliation.

That's really the only way out of this straightjacket.

I like your enthusiasm and perspective, its refreshing.

Perhaps I'm just too cynical but I can't imagine India ever exercising retaliation like the Israelis or Americans do on the random MENA nations. Then again Pakistan is also a different beast from those nations. It is much more advanced and has military/fianancial support from China and other Islamic nations. Even if India becomes strong will it ever possess military might to stop Pakistan from exporting terror? The military capabilities of Pakistan shouldn't be underestimated and I would imagine that even if they never achieve parity with India they can make engagements, even limited ones, very painful.

I'm also not convinced by India's track record on this sort of thing. They've historically been much more merciful to Pakistan even when they were in positions of clear superiority. The past few years have been interesting, but the recent muscular response to Pakistani provocations can and will probably change with succeeding governments.

Its because of this that I reason economy alone is the most important factor. A powerful economy can be used to sway the international community to act against Pakistan. Crippling sanctions and making them a global pariah would probably work to change them much faster than a military response. Soft power can be used in other ways like the Indian entertainment industry and internet/radio broadcasts to Pakistani youth to encourage more moderate thinking.

Being proactive diplomatically is a strength that India should use to the fullest potential.

This is why I allow myself to be a little hopeful. If we can string together multiple terms of BJP; then I believe we may finally have a unique, historical opportunity to effect a paradigm shift in India's defense and foreign policies as well as its equations with adversarial nations like Pakistan and China.

My observation is this Nawaz turd remained silent when in power - yet when ousted he has started speaking up. If he believes in what he is stating then why didnt he speak up when he had voice of authority?
Imagine if he handed over the prick Hafiz Saeed et al to India to face the music - imagine what effect this would have on relations?

It fits his agenda to voice and sing like a canary - the simpleton doesnt realise anyone with half a brain will ask - why the frig did you not pull your finger out and do something when he was in power? Was he too busy plundering the national coffers along with his finance minister cousin Dar?

why didnt he speak up when he had voice of authority?
We know why sir, nobody in power in Pakistan or even outside power can speak up why? He will be either killed like Benazir or politically finished like Altaf or very least harassed daily and forced to leave the country. Civilians don't really have any authority to speak or do anything if you know the situation of Pak.

I am sure if it was upto him or even Zardari they would have handed him over anyday. Even Pak Army Chief can turn him over if he is allowed, but they are bounded in chains by the demons they created i.e hardliners and hatred in Pak Army.

Anyone doing this will be executed in day light be it Gen. Raheel Sharif himself. They have created so many snakes that they now have no other option but to live with them.

After Mumbai Hafiz Saeed brought only death and destruction to Pakistan, saner elements, people calling shots will be so willing to get rid of him but they just can't. I doubt some people in Indian intelligence agency want him either, he is been of great help to inflict serious pain on Pakitan.
