Nah. Just IAF's love and admiration for these French birds. Dassault are also quite pricky about modifying their jets as everybody knows. But anyways, the point about ultra expensive upgrade package remains valid, I guess.

Untill we get a Jaguar like deal with Rafale. We should not move forward.
Or make your own. I think we won't Jaguar such deal from anyn western power.
Defense preparation is not cheap. Dassault eating indian money is acceptable than losing a war with pak or losing territory.

I don't think Rafale is the best platform to get, it's cost to effect ratio is not great, especially with Dassault not allowing customization like with SU30MKI where it can be integrated within IAF ecosystem and locally produced missiles seamlessly.
If we try to negotiate and get these terms in the contract, it will take waste years and time is critical now. Even if you do Dassault may drag their feet later on like they are potentially doing with the first 36.

Focus should be on upgrading SU30MKI and integrating longer BVRs, making sure LCA mk1A and mk2 get online ASAP.
I believe if an outside platform is required, it should be limited numbers of F35A with AIM120C8s and AARGM-ER. Even assuming very minimal integration in IAF ecosystem, these platforms by themselves will be a force to reckon with.
