MBDA to develop the next generation of the MICA missile

The advantage of the VL MICA NG is that the VL MICA can be upgraded simply by changing the missile that is compatible with the MICA and installing a new software version on the same hardware.

Can all MICAs be 100% changed into fully capable MICA NGs during MLU? Or will there be some restrictions?

Can you pls cimpare Mica NG with meteor & AIM120D
  • Meteor: longest reach and biggest no-escape zone thanks to its ramjet. Best pure BVRAAM. MBDA Systems+1
  • AIM-120D/D3: very mature, huge user base, latest D3 refresh + software gives strong all-round BVR performance. dote.osd.mil+1
  • MICA NG (RF & IR): shorter-range than the two above but uniquely versatile (true dual seeker family with IR or AESA RF, same form factor). Excellent for mixed WVR/BVR and envelope-edge shots; big upgrade over legacy MICA via a dual-pulse motor. MBDA Systems+1

*Public ranges/NEZ are indicative; real performance depends on launch altitude/speed, target aspect, EW environment, and software loads.

How they “win” in practice

  • First shot, long stick (OCA/Counter-air at altitude): Meteor keeps thrust to intercept, so it arrives with more energy, expanding no-escape against fighters or cruise missiles at long range. MBDA Systems
  • Capacity & interoperability (coalitions, logistics): AIM-120D/D3—mass production, many users, frequent software drops; very credible seeker/ECCM and datalink behaviour; easy to stock across platforms. dote.osd.mil+1
  • Ambush/EMCON and terminal agility (mixed WVR/BVR): MICA NG-IR enables passive medium-range shots without emissions; NG-RF gives an AESA seeker; dual-pulse helps late-phase manoeuvre and off-boresight/edge-of-envelope kills. Ideal when one pylon needs to cover both WVR and short-to-mid BVR. MBDA Systems+1

Integration snapshot

  • MICA NG: drop-in for Rafale/M2000-5 (same form factor/rails) with +40% range vs legacy MICA. Surface-launch variant exists. MBDA Systems+1
  • Meteor: Rafale, Typhoon, Gripen in service; additional platforms slated. Wikipédia
  • AIM-120D/D3: F-35, F-22, F-15/16/18, others; D3 is the latest hardware refresh; production/demand surging. dote.osd.mil+1

Bottom line for loadout choices

  • Need the best long-range PK/NEZ: pick Meteor where integrated.
  • Need scale, commonality, and steady upgrades across coalition fleets: AIM-120D/D3.
  • Need one family that covers silent BVR (IR), active BVR (RF), and credible WVR with the same envelope and rails—especially on Rafale/M2000: MICA NG.

The French Defence Procurement Agency DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement) has awarded MBDA the contract for the MICA NG (Missile d’Interception et de Combat Aérien Nouvelle Génération) programme to develop the next generation of the MICA missile. With deliveries scheduled to begin in 2026, MICA NG will be available to arm the current and future versions of the Rafale combat aircraft.
Its been 8 years since i posted this news item.

It is something for DRDO to learn from MBDA on how to manage a missile project and predict maturity.
