Congress sweeps byelections in Rajasthan

Massive margins a jolt for BJP; Trinamool Congress bags Uluberia, Noapara seats
In a setback for the NDA, the Congress registered an impressive victory in the three by-elections in Rajasthan while the Trinamool Congress made a clean sweep in West Bengal.

The Congress wrested two Lok Sabha seats — Alwar and Ajmer — and one Assembly seat, Mandalgarh, from the ruling BJP in the western State with huge margins. Trinamool won the Uluberia Lok Sabha and Noapara Assembly constituencies.

With Rajasthan due to hold Assembly elections in a few months, a resurgent Congress will pose a serious challenge to the BJP. The party’s victory in the bypolls, being touted as the “semi-finals”, is being interpreted as a “people’s verdict” against the Vasundhara Raje government’s “failure and arrogance”.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi hailed the party’s impressive show in the bypolls and called the outcome a “rejection” of the BJP by the people. “Well done Rajasthan Congress! Proud of each and every one of you. This is a rejection of the BJP by the people of Rajasthan,” Mr. Gandhi tweeted.

In Alwar, Karan Singh Yadav of the Congress defeated the BJP’s Jaswant Yadav by a margin of 1,96,496 votes, while Congress candidate Raghu Sharma defeated his BJP rival Ramswarup Lamba in Ajmer by 84,414 votes.

In the Mandalgarh Assembly constituency, the Congress’s Vivek Dhakar trounced the BJP’s Shakti Singh Hada by 12,976 votes.

Hundreds of Congress workers burst firecrackers and distributed sweets outside the Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters in Jaipur as the trends became clear.

State Congress president Sachin Pilot, who stayed in Ajmer and criss-crossed the three constituencies during electioneering, was carried inside the building on the shoulders of jubilant party workers.

TMC sweeps, BJP comes 2nd in Bengal bypolls

Friday, 02 February 2018 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata
History repeated itself with weird regularity as ruling TrinamoolCongress continued to sweep Bengal by-elections by bigger margins leaving the BJP the second party behind by miles, the Left and theCongress by “light years.”

Even as the combined Opposition handed out hackneyed losers’ apology alleging rampant capturing of booths the Trinamool showed why Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee still commanded popular patronage by winning the Uluberia parliamentary constituency by an astronomical margin of 4.5 lakh votes and Noapara Assembly seat by a whopping 64,000 votes.

In what the sephologists saw a dress rehearsal for the next year’s LokSabha elections — as also the coming panchayat polls — the vote line tended to see a sharp polarization along communal lines where the Trinamool reaped the benefit of its alleged policy of minority appeasement allowing the BJP to come up as its natural challenger backed by fast consolidating Hindu votes and wresting the second place from the once mighty Left Front. The Congress ended up as a microscopic party.

At Uluberia Sajda Ahmed the wife of late TMC leader and former UnionMinister Sultan Ahmed trounced her nearest BJP rival. The saffron outfit here flourished mainly on the migrating Left and Congress votes. The two parties jointly shed more than 1.5 lakh votes to the BJP which got about 2.5 lakh votes. The Congress forfeited its deposit.

At Noapara TMC’s Sunil Singh got 1.01lakh votes while his nearest rival of BJP Sandip Banerjee secured 38,711 votes leaving behind CPI(M)’s Gargi Chatterjee who got 35,500 votes. The Congress polled little more than 11,000 votes.

The Trinamool had won the Sabang Assembly by-elections late last year by a huge margin. The BJP had finished a close third behind the CPI(M)there.

Earlier, the BJP had wrested second position from the Left at Coochbehar parliamentary constituency and Kanthi Assembly seat. The party was also in a good shape in Birbhum where it was all set toclimb to the second place by wresting the Left votes, insiders said.

Strong opposition is essential for good democracy. Keeps people on their feet and working. Too many years of BJP will yeild the same result as Congress.

Plot to make EVM look good with minimal of political cost. ;)

Anyways, well played Karni Sena !!

I hope and wish that it is what you think :) ... if not, Indian voters are foolish and hopeless. With these results, it is obvious that the voters believe in sycophancy, nepotism and corruption and above all the maayavi illusion of quick fixes from BJP led NDA in a period of four years which the Congress systematically destroyed India in the past 70 years.

My only wish is another term for Modi - by HOOK or CROOK, and India will witness an all round high speed development and complete annihilation of all the CHORS from opposition parties.

So the EVMs were suddenly working ok this time?

So under close scrutiny nobody tampered with them this time?

There are two possibilities that you raise: one, that a state of affairs can never change, even though the causative circumstances change; two, that a state of things at one point of time contradicts all previous states.

Both are fascinating. Going by the first, since we were not independent from 1857 to 1947, we could never have been independent, and what we see today is a sham. Going by the second, since we are independent today, we could never have been not independent earlier.

You do have a vivid imagination.

This is their genuine reaction to rising income inequality. This article will help you analyze this... Mr. Boundless seeker;).

BJP exploited the deprived people of India once, using Hindutwa. My humble and sincere appeal is, let BJP win 2019 elections on merit. BJP already rules some 73% of India, BJP should fight election more ethically, make the people of India believe in BJP. HOOK and Crook, will lead to more trust deficit.

It is the intention that matters, not the means.

Rajasthan by-election is over, and now Padmavat is a good film according to the Karni Sena....No more agitations and vandalism.

Just like the way stone-pelting at churches stopped right after the Delhi election, 'intollerance' and award-wapsi stopped right after the Bihar election, TN farmer agitation stopped right after the Delhi MCD election, and Patidar agitation stopped right after the Gujarat election.

Now it's turn for the dalit agitation, and the signs are showing already.

Karni Sena celebrates Congress victory in Rajasthan bypolls

This is not to deny most people would support someone like sachin pilot over raje anyway. everytime raje has proved to be ineffective. Time for new blood.

Actually the whole lot of BJP CM's have proved incompetent when dealing with subterfuge courtesy the Congress. There's Anandiben Patel followed by Rupani mishandling PAAS in Gujarat followed by the Una incident and it's aftermath , Phadnavis at sea against the "Mook Pradarshan " of the Marathas and later the "Elgar Parishad" leading to the Bhima Koregaon and it's aftermath courtesy the Sambhaji Brigade - all fronts for the NCP, Khacchar mishandling the Jat agitation in Haryana and later the RAM Rahim episode and now the Karni Sena in Rajasthan. There were a few other masterstrokes too - Siddharamiah checkmating BSY by almost ceding the demand by a section of the Lingayats for minority status .It remains a formality given the way the situation there is unfolding .
