LCA AF Mk2 (Medium Weight Fighter) - News and discussions

got another video were he say Jan 2027 clearly

Start 8:48, this is from 4 months ago so they are sticking to the timeline
Now add this with drdo chief's recent june-july 2026 timeline for first flight, seems work has progressed better than they expected, while hal chief is sticking to older timeline or hasn't been briefed.

Fiscal years' names are often shortened based on the year in which they end; for example, "fiscal year 2023-2024" and "FY24" are synonymous. (Source Wikipedia)
My friend, I work in a major financial institution, all my data revolves around financial years. But don't believe me, just Google for what fiscal year will the FM present the budget for, and add FY 26 for good measure. :)

Could be since Ada is the primary on the project, but since HAL is prototyping the aircraft and it being high visibility project he may have a conservative timeline in mind

So, the current is FY26. Next is FY27. Note that this is for the economic survey that just dropped.

For the "budget 2026 " mentioned in media, it is for FY27. I noticed that most articles mention FY(2026-27) without mentioning FY26 or FY27. Either the one who writes is also confused or they mention it this way, to not confuse us.

Its kind of funny, how sometimes seemingly small things stumps us. 😅 Atleast this led me to clear my doubt once and for all. Thank you.

See she used the term FY 2026 for FY 2025-26

Another example of this.

The fiscal deficit is budgeted at 4.4% of GDP in FY26 down from 4.8% in the previous financial year. Over the same period, the revenue deficit as a proportion of GDP narrowed steadily, reaching its lowest level of 0.8% in FY26, since FY09, thereby leaving a greater allocation for capital expenditure and reflecting a sustained improvement in the quality of expenditure. The Revenue expenditure moderated from 13.6% of GDP in FY22 to 10.9% in FY25, thereby creating space for more productive capital expenditure. Expenditure on major subsidies was rationalized from 1.9 % in FY22 to 1.1% in FY26, even as food security was ensured by the Centre to about 78.9 crore beneficiaries as of October 2025. The direct tax base expanded steadily, with income tax return filing increasing from 6.9 crore in FY22 to 9.2 crore in FY25. Higher return filings reflect improved compliance, greater use of technology in tax administration, and a growing number of individuals entering the tax net as their incomes rise.
As you can clearly see here, FY 26 refers to FY 2025-26 not FY 2026-27. So Q1 of FY 2027 is just 2 months away not 13-14 months...You can ask any AI tool or any acquaintance who work in the bank. And you will get the same answer.

Trex won't available in near future i fear.

Who needs it in near future. If it is available by the time of replacement of F404, it will serve the purpose. If we are able to operationalize Kaveri with know how of Safran-HAL 120 kn engine technologies, it should serve the purpose.

Actually, I don’t have any inside information.

That said, the main work to obtain the M88 T-REX engine has already begun, since it must be available before 2030 for the first flights of the Rafale F5.

Furthermore, to convert a standard M88 into an M88 T-REX, only a few modules will need to be changed — I believe it’s around three modules, while the M88 has about 21 modules in total. The M88 was designed as a family of engines sharing the same core, with growth potential. The family was originally intended to cover roughly 7.5 tons to 11.5 tons maximum thrust.

Now, the technological step brought by T-REX basically shifts these capabilities upward by about 20%, while keeping the same overall dimensions and weight.

To replace the F414, we would need an engine in the 6-ton class (dry). With the T-REX technology on the current M-88 we can reach around 6 tons, and with afterburner we can obtain about 9 tons without any major redesign.

If we want around 10 tons with afterburner, we need to ingest a bit more air, meaning a slightly larger fan diameter. But we have margin here: the F414 fan diameter is about 89 cm, while the M88 is only about 69 cm. A fan diameter around 79 cm would already be more than sufficient.

So, in theory, it would be possible to create an engine with the final integration characteristics suitable for Tejas Mk2, even without the full T-REX technology at first. Such an “intermediate” engine could deliver around 5.5 / 8 tons (dry / afterburner), and later it could accept the three upgraded T-REX modules, bringing it up to around 6.5 / 10 tons.

It would also have the advantage of allowing early studies and tests for the integration of an M88-derivative into the Tejas Mk2.

I have said it many times and I say this again. Any boost beyond current F414 can make MWF a super plane. Batter super cruise speed, batter maneuver, batter range and edge over rivals. If we can make Safran-HAL engine operational and able to fit them in MWF post second or third squadron, we can make MWF a Super MWF. I want atleast frontal stealth, External weapon bay, Rafale sort of electronics. It will have state of art software and great AI capabilities. Higher thrust engine (Possibly with TVC) can make it don of its category, and it can defeat anything from Chinese arsenal. It will have best weapon option including the weapons from Europe, France, Isreal, Rusia and Desi weapons of DRDO. No other plane in the world has such wider choice of weapons. Scalp, Brahmos NG, Gaurav, Spice, Hammer, SAAW, Scalp, Python V, ASRAAM, AMRAAM, Meteor, R37M, Astra Mk1,2 and 3, MICA. All of them top in class. GAN based AESA. Bloody baap of all planes in class. Mini rafale at 1/3 price of rafale.

Then you need to redesin LCA during engine replacement, also tweaking flight control software. Is it really worthy to do such things for an aircraft like LCA after it spends most of its life cycle?

We need to plan it. Engenderers and designers may take a call to what extent modification can be done and how we can deal with issues which will come at the time of engine replacement. one of the option is to buy out GE 404 license production right.

You know better than the DRDO
