JNU sedition case: Top forensic lab authenticates video clips of alleged sedition by Kanhaiya Kumar & co
Four crucial pieces of video evidence against former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and 46 others in a 2016 sedition case have been certified as authentic by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). The four videos had been aired exclusively on Zee News, and had at the time faced accusations of being doctored.

The four video clips that Zee News had aired at the time are among the 13 video clips cited by the Delhi Police in the chargesheet filed on January 14. The chargesheet, which ran 1200 pages, named Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya among 47 individuals of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) for raising slogans calling for the breaking up of India.

The slogans had allegedly been raised on February 9, 2016, at an event to commemorate the hanging of Afzal Guru, the Kashmiri terrorist who was convicted for masterminding the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001.

Of the 13 video clips cited as evidence in the chargesheet, nine were grainy clips shot on mobile phones. The four videos aired by Zee News were the only ones with clear audio and video.

Some of the other named in the chargesheet are Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayeea Rassol, Bashir Bhat and Basharat. Thirty-six others, including Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja's daughter Aprajita, Shehla Rashid (then vice-president of the JNUSU), Rama Naga, Ashutosh Kumar and Banojyotsna Lahiri have been identified in the chargesheet as those with insufficient evidence against them, police sources said.

Last week, a Delhi court had criticised the Delhi Police for filing the chargesheet without obtaining the sanction of the Delhi government. Delhi Police later told the court that the required sanction to prosecute would be obtained within 10 days.

The sanction would have to be granted by the AAP's Delhi government, which has said it has sought legal advice. Sources in the government said it would follow the rules that govern the sanction for prosecution, and that it should be allowed to carry out due diligence before making decision. The next hearing on the matter is on February 6.
