The maiden sea trials of the indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant have progressed very well and the second phase of trails are expected to begin end October with the third phase planned in December, a defence official said.

“Vikrant is expected to be delivered to the Navy in April and likely to be commissioned in August 2022,” the official said which would also coincide with 75 years of Independence.

Simultaneously, work is under way on the aviation complex of the carrier for which a Russian team is here. The aviation trials will continue once the carrier is commissioned and they would be done with the Mig-29K aircraft in service with the Navy, the official said.

MF STAR and B8 will be added after the phase 2 trials ?
14 Mig-29Ks, 2 naval Dhruv & 1 Sea King on the deck. 12 Mig-29Ks & 10 Kamov Ka-28/Ka-31 under the deck.

In an ideal situation, hopefully the escort vessels will carry the Ka31 AEW. (With most destroyers / frigates of Navy capable to have 2 helicopters, this shouldn't be a problem).

Also in a strike type mission, the ASW assets can be moved to dedicated asw ships.

Freeing up the space on board for fighter jets , heavy transport helicopters and SAR helicopters.

The sea may seem calm but may have a swell causing the ship to pitch. Also as part of testing of the ship, we test its stabilisers. In that we delibrately cause pitching and rolling to test out the effectiveness of the stabilisers. Stabilisers are small wing like structures which protude out from the hull below water and counter the rolling and pitching. Such a test is done to see the limits upto which the ship can completely dampen out the rolling and pitching. It is important for a carrier as the pitching and rolling has direct effect on aircraft launch.
