Indian Missiles and Munitions Discussion

Resident experts @Ashwin @marich01 @Parthu @Rajput Lion and others what exactly is the Sudarshan Chakra system announced by the PM? Is it a new AD system complete with radars and missile or an integrated network covering vast swaths of India with already developed and developing systems such as Akash, Kusha and S400? And how is it different than our IACCS? Or is possible the Sudarshan Chankra just another name for the final implementation of our BMD program?
Currently "Sudarshan Chakra" is the name assigned to S-400. I said it sometime ago that unlike traditional ADS systems, S-400 is as offensive system as any fighter jet because of its ability to turn enemy airspace into No Fly Zone due to its range.

Quite obviously PM has been impressed with S-400's "Offensive-Defense" abilities and now we're going to build a nation-wide IADS system that may even include SAMs that have a 1000kms range and guided by our space assets. Yes, you read it first here. It will also include such SAMs that could also be used against ground targets.

It is going to be very ambitious project and thanks to the determination of DRDO scientists, we're going to successfully implement it across India and even far;)

For that we need next gen launch detection satellites, we already seem to be doing great work in the field of ground based long range radars but our space based ISR for missile detection and tracking is still very poor imo, which needs to be rectified for any sort of dome to be a reality.
of course we would need a lot of capability enhancement for such an integrated system (or rather system of systems) which is why the whole of nation level development process is being touted. Todays report sort of make it more clear

This family?

I think based on what is read in another forum even the current lrashm without any physical design change can be modified into a very long(~1000km) anti awacs/tanker missile, if guidance system is present.

• IM complaint underwater Blast Warhead
• Electronic time fuze instead of YDB 60 fuze
• Max range achieved successfully

I have some questions

1) Astra mk1 has only been seen in wing pylons, it has ejector launchers but still never seen on intake pylons, does anyone has any pics of astra being carried under/between intakes?

2) MICA being allegedly tested from Su-30MKI, but again no pictures, does anyone has pictures for these?

3) Rudram - 2 being said to have and tested a IIR seeker, but we never got a view of the real IIR seker. any pictures for it?

The immediate priority needs to be in cognitive warfare.
There is a Cyber Command in the works that will likely handle integrated ew+ cyber, much like China's SSF/ISF.

Overall, SC is far more comprehensive than I thought. Wonder what the near-space element might be? There were reports that one of our sats was buzzed by a hostile sat of a 'neighboring country' earlier this year.

Near space could be HAPS in my opinion.

what else do we need a LFRJ for? a r37M class missile? we alr have the astra mk3 for that? hypersonic interceptor? or a pl17 class missile for awacs and tankers?
many possible future applications. this is one of the enabling tech pillars. Other tech like multipulse rocket motor, SFDR , hybrid rocket motor, scramjet, PDE etc all are tech enabling pillars. You can scale it up or down and use as building block in a hybrid system as suitable. All types of missiles can be made Surface to air, air to surface, air to air everything. Key idea is this tech allow supersonic flight at lower altitude by using air breathing engine, so the missile need not carry oxidizer with fuel. That means weight save useful for design of good optimised long range missile system that can do cruise flight.

Ah icic, its like how we used the ISRO scramjet as a pillar to develop our HGV and military scramjet. Makes sense to have a single adaptable system.
Theoretically yes although HVG case is a little different, there is not much difference technically between Agni 2 & modern hgv operation except from design of lower L/D to a much improved higher L/D ratio based design & control guidance law.

Missile systems propulsion wise are generally categorised as all boost, boost sustain or all sustain. These are of various speed regime & active propulsion time based on certain primary constraints. HGV system fall in the first category with high peak velocity attained at the desired altitude quickly, then by using aerodynamic lift generated at such peak velocity in the atmospheric level it glide for a long way while maintaining control. The scarmjet allow for a lower altitude flight and for a longer duration like the boost sustain mode. Since the Earth is round with an atmosphere around it, the lower you can fly along the curvature at higher speed by withstanding the aerodynamic drag induced heating effect the better.
