What was first seen as a sudden clash during a Ram Navami procession on April 2, 2022, in Rajasthan’s Karauli is now emerging as a pre-planned act of violence, according to findings from the Karauli riots investigation.

Police say the attack was orchestrated days in advance with over 200 youths allegedly mobilised, stones and weapons stockpiled on rooftops, and a key ambush point identified along the rally route. As the procession moved through Phoota Gate towards Hatwara, coordinated stone pelting began, followed by street-level attacks, arson, and looting that spread across the town.

The probe also points to selective shutdowns of shops and transport belonging to one community, suggesting prior planning. Crucially, investigators have recovered audio recordings in which accused persons allegedly discuss setting shops on fire, arranging petrol, and evading police action.

Officials further claim that evidence was deliberately destroyed soon after the violence, with stones cleared and bloodstains washed away before police arrival.
