If a person wants to learn Hindi , he can easily do so

But putting 3 languages in an official school curriculum is burdening the children

Languages should be learnt out of interest not compulsion

My neighbour's daughter was curious about Chinese ,So she started learning it slowly just out of curiousity over 3 years

Now it is helping her in her career.

The same goes for any language. The 3 language formula was proposed after a lot of thought & consideration. It aimed at preserving ones local languages & promote the concept of a bridge language to ensure a common mode of communication across the length & breadth of a multi lingual nation. Hence English & Hindi in the latter role with no single national language but a number of official languages.

I think all of us have been thru 3 languages I school. It didn't kill us. Not sure why should the younger generation consider themselves especially burdened.

Languages learnt out of interest is another topic altogether. The Hindi belt just like TN which have essentially followed the 2 languages formula ought to put this to good use and opt for a 3rd local or international language. I believe that's the idea behind sticking to the 3 language formula.

My sympathies with your neighbor's daughter. She's certainly chosen an excellent time to learn Mandarin.

Kids are under a lot of pressure

They have regular exams and assignments and extra curricular things also have to be attended to

Then the time lost in Travelling
At least One hour daily

Why should children be treated like political pawns , that is the only point of
Imposing 3 languages

After Tenth Grade , they can easily relate to the importance of knowing an additional language and choose what ever they feel like

And Yes I will again say that Sanskrit is useless

My neighbour' s daughter already knows Hindi and English , Hindi being her mother tongue so.she won't loose anything

Languages are learnt either out of necessity or out of Sheer Interest

I also know Four Malayalam Boys who live PG close to my house , came to Mumbai on getting jobs

Only one of them knew a little Hindi
Just few Words

Initially they had a tough time with the shopkeepers who obviously know only Hindi and Marathi

But within a few months they learnt Hindi and are happy here

Maharashtra already follows the 3 language formula ever since it was first implemented. You're making it sound as if we're implementing it just now.

I know , the 3 language formula is being followed

I just dont support it or like it

That is what I said

The third language should be introduced after Class Tenth as a new language and that also should be optional

India needs talented Human Resources
Especially in Science and Technology

Additional Languages can be learnt at any stage In life

How can something for profit for selected few over something for public at large be good for everyone ?
Everyone ? Never. Everyone never wins. In any system.

Let me return that question to you : How can anything meant for all people bring forward economic mobility ?

It is the perennial rule of all society that for there to be winners there must be losers. Remove that and nobody will put any effort to acquire any knowledge or skill that would be worth anything. What good is knowledge if it brings no benefit to the knowers ?

Its simple isn't it ? If all people earn equally why must I try harder ? There is no incentive. Soon enough nobody is wiling to put in any effort and forward mobility in economy dies out.

I am not saying capitalism doesn't have problems. The rich get richer & the poor get poorer. It takes a lot more effort for people on the lower economic strata to pull themselves up. As such some income redistribution seems justified. But lets not get so far into socialism to oppose anything private.

Much of what people use in everyday life came from private efforts, not public/govt. efforts. In fact, the reason why poor parents spend their hard earned to make sure their children get better education is because of the promise of forward economic mobility.

Focus on the 2nd & 3rd Tier universities & the others would follow. Given the steep fees & the increasing tendency of the US to clampdown on US student visas, we're awaiting the imminent arrival of the first among these foreign varsities to buck the trend & some body would definitely bite the bullet .

Only suggestion would be to ask the GoI to rope in our industrial houses to tie up with such varsities & to keep out humanities focussing only on STEM. Your thoughts @Nilgiri ; @Milspec

Nothing muc to add, STEM must indeed be the focus, we are still too behind on it given our population size and potential.

Industrial tie up is a must like you said, simply put you get better funding stream and more up to touch with what the job at the end finally requires etc

Thanks for that. Do you notice the common thread among almost every engineer that looks back at their curriculum did not prepare them for the real world.

I used to be on that boat, but more I think about it, it is quite difficult for any curriculum to do so especially in the mechanical sphere which deals with pretty much the existence of everything built around us.

I got a chance to reconnect with one of my professors from engineering. The current curriculum is pretty strong, but the idea of regurgitating answers on paper is something we need to move away from. Project work and Industry participation is the only way forward for the field.

Lastly, this is another area where PSU's role can come really handy if they chose to participate. Create 6-month internships for the core engg programs.
