Indian Defense Industry General News and Updates

I mentioned Rustom/Tapas because all ADA/HAL has to show off is only Rustom. Don’t know if it’s higher end or lower end of capability and price wise.
Chinese and Iranians are producing and selling more capable uavs at 1/4 of the price. (Iranians maybe even lesser)

Doesn't matter. Such drones are still more expensive than missiles. Even the cheap Chinese and Iranian drones cost way more than a missile. Plus these drones are so slow that the S-400 can easily tell them apart from actual threats like fighter jets.

What you need are cheap 100-500Kg drones that are released by fighter jets during SEAD/DEAD missions.

S400 doesn’t have DEW/Lasers and EWS is expensive to develop and operate can be countered cheaply.

The S-400 is part of a layered defence system. DEW and EW will be part of this structure. It's quite cheap. In fact the cheapest.

Busting US and European supplied latest ADS is Saudi Arabia and Iraq and Russian S300 (possibly S300PMUs too) in Syria and Armania is not a small achievement. We tend to downplay achievements of others very often forgetting that most of our own ADS are also similar (if not primitive) than those got destroyed in these skirmishes.
Even much hyped pantsir (which we trialled recently) got swatted like mosquitoes

The IAF will be well set by early 2023 to fight the next gen war. When it comes to high end systems, we pretty much have one of the most advanced ADS network in the world at this time.

The IA is way behind. They need at least until 2028. But it doesn't matter as much since the IAF can protect them.

Reactions: Chain Smoker
In the first project to be finalised under the industry-funded Make in India scheme of the defence ministry, an Odisha-based company has signed a contract to supply expendable aerial targets to the Army and Air Force, with officials acknowledging it as a critical landmark that will pave the way for more such opportunities.

The contract to supply 125 of the Manoeuvrable Expendable Aerial Targets (MEAT) and associated equipment, under the Make in India II category - which is meant for research and development projects funded by the industry with an indigenous content of over 50% - was signed this week.

While the value of the contract at ₹96 crore is low when compared to typical defence contracts, the competition saw the Odisha company pitching its product against defence giant Larsen and Toubro. The Shikra MEAT system being manufactured by the company is a localised version of the Banshee Jet 40 system that has earlier been imported by the armed forces.

THREAD!!

The entire discussion is very interesting. The whole concept of MII which involves a JV between a foreign firm & a domestic partner works if screwdrivergiri eventually evolves into design & manufacturing expertise. Otherwise it's just relabelling of foreign products in India & availing benefits under MII.
